The Sea Around Us Opening for Porcelain Raft at KFN May 31

Posted on:

Philly four-piece The Sea Around Us is somewhat of an enigma when it comes to putting them in a genre. You could say they are reminiscent of the Beach Boys at times (most notably in “Walls”), and at other times, they start to sound Grizzly Bear-esque. Their name comes from a book written in the ‘50s by conservationist Rachel Carson. The band says that “the book includes deeply moving descriptions of astounding natural phenomena expressed in great poetic detail. We intend to live up to Carson’s enlightening ideal by presenting a sonic landscape that is challenging yet accessible. The Sea Around Us are more like their own island where many genres pass by and land on their shores for a bit. They recently launched a Kickstarter campaign last week to fund their first full-length album (which you can donate to HERE). They’ll be opening up for Porcelain Raft along with The Homophones tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. You’ll want to get there early for this one. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Maura Filoromo

Rob, Lately and the Tiny Heart Band Opening for CHAPPO at The Fire May 30

Posted on:

Rob, Lately a.k.a. Rob Malloy simply sounds like he’s having a good time on his LP Tiny Heart. So it’s not surprising that he has brought together some folks to back him as the Tiny Heart Band and join in on the fun tonight at The Fire. They’ll be opening for Deli NYC psych pop faves CHAPPO, whose rad tune “Come Home” appeared in an iPod Touch commercial a while back so you’ve probably jammed out to it without even knowing who the artist was. Well, now you do. And you can feel those good vibes again this evening in the cozy Girard Ave. staple! The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., $8, 8pm, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Ween Break Up :o(

Posted on:

It’s a shame though this should be no surprise to some of you since they’ve not been very active as of late. Aaron Freeman a.k.a. Gene Ween told Rolling Stone from his New Jersey home:
“It’s time to move on… I’m retiring Gene Ween.”

Freeman goes on to say:
“It’s been a long time, 25 years. It was a good run.”

“For me it’s a closed book. In life sometimes, in the universe, you have to close some doors to have others open. There’s no, ‘Goddamn that such and such!’ For me, I’d like to think it’s a door I can close finally.”

Ween are/were one of the great bands that carved their own path in the music industry, and inspired a generation of music experimentalists. They will be missed. You can read the rest of the article HERE.

Langor & Cheers Elephant Opening for The Spinto Band at KFN May 29

Posted on:

Tonight The Spinto Band will be wrapping up their residency at Kung Fu Necktie. It’s been a sweet run that the band has shared with plenty of their talented Philly musician pals. They’ve brought along the delightfully quirky indie psych pop of Langor to open the festivities for their last hurrah this month. Bushy-haired mastermind Brian Langan will be bringing his endearing glam rock theatrics to warm up the crowd, and he’ll also be joined on stage this evening by The Spinto Band’s Thomas Hughes on keyboards. Cheers Elephant has been relentless performing and pushing their latest release Like Wind Blows Fire so the local four-piece should be well-rehearsed to deliver an energetically tight set. Get ready to leave your worries behind! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

New Music Video: “Boogie Lights” – Work Drugs

Posted on:

Here’s a new music video from Work Drugs for their latest track “Boogie Lights.” It was directed by NYC video artists/art therapist Karl Shoes, who also worked on their “Ice Wharf” video. “Boogie Lights” is said to be “dedicated to Anna LePierse, one of our oldest friends who left sailing college in the Keys to pursue her dreams of ‘making’ it in Hollywood. After a few years she found her true calling… out in the valley… and well the rest is history.” Believe it or not? We choose the latter, but we do enjoy the mythical stories of “Thomas Crystal” and “Benjamin Louisiana” that tell the tale of how their songs came to be.
