“Big Crime,” the closing song from Moor Mother x Mental Jewelry‘s EP Crime Waves, has been remixed by fellow Philly sound sculptor Madam Data. The solemn, foreboding tone is enhanced by the rapid-fire, glitchy noise elements. The clarity of Moor Mother’s vocals plays off the electronic shards/threads that fray the edges, adding a sense of uncertainty, as if caught in the moment. You can find Madam Data this Friday, August 17 on an All Mutable showcase at the Tundra Dome that also includes Embarker, Garvin Kelly, and Cleo Miao x Trngs.
New Track: “Mean Spirit” – Missing Earth
“Mean Spirit” is featured on Gold, Flour and Salt, the debut album from Missing Earth. Coming out from the menacing darkness, with a celestial tone, the track accelerates into the wide-open. There’s a strange familiarity that provides a lonely disconnect. It appears to move one further away, exploring one’s own mind, while severing ties in the process.
New Music Video: “Acme Parking Garage” – The Chairman Dances
A sneak peak of Child of My Sorrow, the forthcoming album from The Chairman Dances, has emerged. Directed by Bob Sweeney, the video for "Acme Parking Garage” begins with the eerie emptiness of the garage, which eventually flourishes into the expanse of the store. Then, a warning for a wet floor sends things into a temporary, downward spiral, before a veiled sense of normalcy concludes. Child of My Sorrow is due out on September 7 via Black Rd Records, and you can catch the band’s record release show the following evening at Boot & Saddle, where the quartet will be supported by fellow locals Bird Watcher and Brother Martin. New Inside Voices Demo EP Available for Streaming
An air of strange saturates in the new four-song demo from Inside Voices. Steered by the omnipresent push of percussion and the commander-control, dispensed vocals in a space-station setting, an over-arching intensity hangs in the atmosphere – one that lies dormant and then is realized in switch-flipping, musical reactions that tip the scales. It’s a gradual swell of heaviness that asserts its stake on a shoegazing headspace.
New Busy Bee Project EP Available for Streaming & Purchase
A Stranger Is a Friend You Haven’t Met is the latest EP from Busy Bee Project, a.k.a. Deb Gilmore. It is out now via Good How Are You Records. A free-floating, folk dream commences as one listens to this five-song selection. Absorbed in the casual, upbeat instrumentation and the inviting, natural elegance of Gilmor’s vocals, one quickly feels at home in these new sonic surroundings. From the moment of introduction, a new affection is forged.

New Track: “WTFK” – Yowler
Black Dog In My Path, the forthcoming album from Yowler, a.k.a. Maryn Jones (All Dogs, Saintseneca), is scheduled for release on October 12 via Double Double Whammy. Hypnotic vocals and the pull of kick and snare instantly draws you into the record’s lead single, "WTFK". There’s a solemn sincerity to Jones’s delivery, which gains power as the instrumentation opens up. Don’t miss Yowler at PhilaMOCA on Thursday, October 11!
Weekend Warrior, August 10 – 12
Greg Mendez’s songwriting seems to pull away from the periphery, focusing in on subject matter that makes the musical plots play out like intimate scenes. One becomes entranced by the gentle swirl of acoustic guitar and the reverberating haunt of melodic progressions. Subdued but dripping with insanity, there’s the feeling that you’ve been in these rooms/places before, yet something is just a bit off-kilter. Tonight at The Pharmacy, Mendez will be part of a lineup that also includes the tranquil, swaying, fuzz-flecked psych of Sun Organ. In support of their recent debut album It Felt Like Glass (No Sleep Records), the upbeat emo of California quartet No Better, and the eclectic noise-pop of Lava Gulls complete the billing. – Michael Colavita

New Chill Dad LP Available for Streaming & Download
The duo of Zack Williams and Nicholas Kearns, a.k.a. Chill Dad, recently shared their new self-titled LP. Coasting in a hypnotic, bedroom cloud, these songs marinate in an aqueous groove. Pulsating in a relaxed, ethereal state, it’s easy to light up and get lost in these sun-kissed tracks. "Cause it’s Friday… And you ain’t got shit to do!"
New Pet LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
The dusty haze of Pet‘s folky, lo-fi melodies is breezy, simultaneously soothing, and emotively affects. With Hell Yeah Ulysses, the group taps into a sparse simplicity – one which highlights the pleasant, loose, jangly stir, without obscuring the lyrics. Much like the sparkle of sunlight off the morning dew, there’s a delight in the natural whimsy of it all. This new collection of songs quickly forges a memorable familiarity, as if they were always there.
New Black Horse Motel EP Available for Streaming & Purchase
And Then You Were Gone is the new EP from Philly quartet Black Horse Motel, and is out now via Single Batch Records. Fortified with succinct harmonies, the country-folk hybrid emotionally pulls as the dramatic momentum of strings accents the intense nature of each recording. There’s a smoke-clearing suspense that exhibits personal strength yet still aches.
New Track: “Without” – Jonny Clousson
“Without” is the latest single from North Carolina transplant and singer-songwriter Jonny Clousson. The song ponders the potential changes that life will bring, after moving on from someone. It takes that emotive leap forward, and creates an enthusiastic/ailing dynamic. You can catch Clousson performing this Saturday, August 11 at Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse, along with Josh Alvarez and Nathan Gray.
