Tuesday Tune-Out w/Tadoma & Jeff Zeigler at PhilaMOCA Sept. 11

Posted on:

Tonight is going to get really weird (in a good way) at PhilaMOCA for our second installment of Tuesday Tune-Out! We’re taking it to the furthest reaches of the universe with the interstellar sounds of Tadoma, a.k.a. Joe Patitucci, & Arc in Round‘s Jeff Zeigler. The two artists are a perfect combination to get us lost in the vast galaxies of our minds this evening. Patitucci will also be bringing along his favorite episode of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos called "The Edge of Forever" on VHS. Smoke ’em if ya got ’em, folks, or just ask to join one of our seshes. We don’t mind.

Swearin’ Make Their Local Live Performance Debut at Golden Tea House Sept. 11

Posted on:

Pop-punk outfit Swearin’ recently made the move from Brooklyn to Philly adding to our growing hometown list of bands to watch. The four-piece, led by Allison Crutchfield (one half of the twin sister combo formerly of P.S. Eliot and teenage Alabama rock band the Ackleys, who were the subject of a short YouTube documentary), will be making their local live performance debut tonight at Golden Tea House. The group will be opening for Tenement this evening, and will also be performing another Philly show next week on September 18 at Cloud City. Swearin’ already has plans to hit the road in November with Japandroid. New Music Video: “Moonbeams” – Family Band

Posted on:

We had a chance to interview Family Band’s Kim Krans about the band’s evolution and her role as the director for the video of the group’s lead single “Night Song” from their latest LP Grace and Lies, which you can check out HERE. With the new music video for “Moonbeams” (below), Krans passes the reins to director Sam Macon, who successfully captures the beauty and eeriness found on the band’s album in a strangely touching love story.

Philly Drum Project Presents “Beats, Brews, and Banter”

Posted on:

Check out “Beats, Brews, and Banter” tonight at Roosevelt’s Pub (2220 Walnut St.)! It’s a free monthly meet-up (from 7pm – 9pm) coordinated by Philly Drum Project, a percussive collective dedicated to sharing gear, lessons, beats and gigs, while emphasizing creativity, education, and community. Each event has a featured clinician/speaker, and this evening’s special guest will be Tim Arnold from Good Old War. Sounds like a supportive music community thing that’s a good place to learn more about your art, meet likeminded people, and possibly find a drummer for your next project, which can often be a difficult thing to do. Brews are also always a plus. Cheers!

Dreambook Opening for Papa M at JB’s Sept. 10

Posted on:

Relatively new to the Philly indie music scene, Dreambook will be making their first appearance on Johnny Brenda’s stage tonight. The quartet currently only has two demos available online, which you can take a listen to HERE. Their track “Ghost” is driven by fuzzy guitars that provide an ominous undertone, while “Stay Inside” is airier with a lackadaisical daydreaming quality. Both demos give you a glimpse into the sound of a promising young group. They’ll have the opportunity to open for seasoned veteran David Pajo who has worked with Slint, Tortoise, Billy Corgan, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs just to name a few and will be coming to Philly with his own project Papa M. Can you say “accomplished”? Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Kung Fu Necktie Celebrates Its 4-Year Anniversary w/Vintage Kicks Sept. 10

Posted on:

Phonographic Arts will be helping Kung Fu Necktie celebrate its 4-year anniversary tonight! Headlining the evening are post/pop-punkers Vintage Kicks. The local five-piece has been bringing audiences to a frenzy with razor-sharp guitars and the impassioned vocals of lead singer Alex Marlys. The band is a Deli fave, and will also be the featured artist at PhilaMOCA on September 25 for our final Tuesday Tune-Out. They’ll be sharing this evening’s celebratory bill with fellow Philly rockers The Chelsea Kills, Alabama’s Daikaiju, and South Jersey’s The Flyswatters. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $7, 21+ – Alexis V.

Greenfest Philly at Headhouse Square Sept. 9

Posted on:

Now that yesterday’s rain has passed, we should have some fine weather for today’s Greenfest Philly. The local area festival is where you can go to learn about living sustainably while having a good time. The music will be provided by Clean Air Council for “Earth Jam II.” To celebrate the organization’s 45th anniversary, they’ve recruited local pop-rockers Cheers Elephant, hip-hop band Abstract Verses, whiskey rock outfit Mountjoy, and funky soul rockers You Do You. Now, go save the Earth! Or at least get some tips to help out those trying. Headhouse Square, 2nd and South St., 11am – 5pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

A Benefit for Maasai Rising at MilkBoy Philly Sept. 8

Posted on:

It’s always good to see bands and artists aligning themselves with organizations outside the purview of life in Philly. Tonight’s show at MilkBoy Philly has a particularly far reach. A benefit for Maasai Rising will raise money for the non-profit organization to continue its goals of helping all members of the Maasai Tribe in Kenya and Tanzania, especially the empowerment of their young women. The cheery indie pop of Arrah and the Ferns, who is also our featured Tuesday Tune-Out act on September 18 at PhilaMOCA, will be leading the pack this evening, and they’ll be joined by the light-hearted rock of Sunset Recorder and the seductive vocal stylings of Kate FoustMilkboy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 9:30pm, $10, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

The Bigger Lovers’ Honey in the Hive Turns Ten at JB’s Sept. 8

Posted on:

Come out and celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Honey in the Hive, The Bigger Lovers landmark sophomore album. After a 6-year hiatus, from 2005-2011 the quartet of now 40-somethings reemerged on the scene last year. When they returned the stage, the casual pop-rocking instant groove came back with them. Their songs have an instantly relatable vibe that is punctuated by harmonious vocals, a steadfast backbeat and slick interlaced guitar work. Be prepared to fall and fall fast for them tonight at Johnny Brenda’s (because size really does matter). Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, September 7 – 9

Posted on:

Last weekend marked the end of summer for many, though it doesn’t officially end until Autumn Equinox. Luckily, there are plenty of shows to hit this weekend to keep summer alive and well in Philly. We love the scuzzy, face-melting sounds of Purling Hiss, and it seems that the rest of the music world is starting to realize the badassery of Mike Polizze’s wailing guitar so catch the Hiss while you can before they are taken away from us on seemingly endless tours. They’ll be opening tonight for legendary post-punk outfit Mission of Burma at Union Transfer. (BTW: We also love WHYY so don’t miss out on their generous Connections Fest freebie this Saturday at The Great Plaza with Yo La Tengo, Maps & Atlases, Frank Turner and locals The Lawsuits and Fabian Akilles.) Union Transfer, 1026 Spring garden St., 8pm, $18, All Ages (Photo by Tim Bugbee) – Alexis V.
