They’ll be celebrating its release on September 29 at the TLA, but you can take a listen and cop it for free below so you’ll be in the know. Enjoy!
Trophy Wife Opening for The Corin Tucker Band at JB’s Sept. 18
![]()
Socially conscious, feminist rockers Trophy Wife are opening for one of the original Riot Grrls, Corin Tucker and her new band, tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The Philly by way of D.C. duo, made up of guitarist/vocalist Diane Foglizzo and drummer Katy Otto, released their second album Sing What Scares You over the summer. The LP is full of emotional and intriguing lyrics set to complex post-hardcore riffs and rhythms. Trophy Wife’s live shows are known for their intensity, and the group’s deeply personal interactions while playing – often face to face. Ladies (and gents), come out and get inspired to start your own band! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave, 9pm, $12, 21+ – Dan Brightcliffe
New Track: “Leaving Behind” – Sugar Tongue Slim
We’re fans of local emcee Sugar Tongue Slim (STS), and are certainly happy that he chose to move from Atlanta to Philly. He garnered a lot of attention for the flips of some well-known tracks on his last mixtape GOLDRush. STS is back with his follow-up GOLDRush II, which contains music from artists like Grimes, Little Dragon, Sleigh Bells, Kanye West, etc. It was originally scheduled for early summer release but was postponed due to his European tour with The Crookers. Below is one of the standout tracks for you to check out called “Leaving Behind,” which samples The Cardigans’ “Starter.” You can also download GOLDRush II in its entirety HERE.

New Track: “Boyalty” – Worshiper
![]()
Below is a new track called “Boyalty” from Worshiper, a new project from former Power Animal members Matt Hampson, Kevin O’Neill and Marie Nicolo (not to be mistaken for Philly sludge metal act with the same name). The trio will be making its live performance debut on October 10 at Johnny Brenda’s opening for How to Dress Well.
Free Download: “Flu Game” – Young Savage
We had a chance to hear first-hand Young Savage’s flow as he impressed a group of media folks (including ourselves) during a recent tour of the legendary Sigma Sound Studios with GPTMC. Check out the new single “Flu Game” from his upcoming album Paragon, and you can also download it for free below.
Far-Out Fangtooth Opening for Mount Eeerie at FUC Sept. 17
Super fuzzed-out garage-goth noise-makers Far-Out Fangtooth will be bringing their psychedelic doom and gloom to the basement of the First Unitarian Church tonight. The four-piece delivered an impressive LP last year via Siltbreeze Records, which earned them The Deli Philly’s October Album of the Month honors, and their 2012 EP The Thorns, which was recorded by Moon Women’s Justin Pittney and released by HoZac Records, is proving to be a sleeper favorite of mine with each listen. Get your fix this evening when Far-Out Fangtooth open for Phil Elverum’s Mount Eerie who will be in full band mode. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 8pm, $12, All Ages – Alexis V.
Get Lost in Spacin’ at KFN Sept. 16
Spacin’ have never lacked for creativity in seasoning their music with the kinds of jangly, fuzzed-out experimental sounds that have been common to Philadelphia since the days of Azusa Plane. Their psychedelia-infused jams are always a great starting point for what’s going on in Philly’s space-garage-lo-fi scene at any given moment. The band’s steadfastness earned their debut Deep Thuds our June Album of the Month spot. Where Spacin’ veers off into cosmic, abstract ruminations, The Residuels are there tonight to bring it back into more concrete territory. Their tunes are straight-up garage-blues rock standards, embellished with the unmistakable talents of Creepoid‘s Pat Troxell and Moon Women‘s Justin Pittney. They’re in equally good company with French rockers Jack of Heart and Super Vacations at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, (Tickets Available at Door), 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg
Rock and Read Festival at The Rotunda Sept. 16

Philly’s Rock to the Future is a great organization that provides free music education and tutoring to lower-income students that wouldn’t normally be able to afford it. Today marks the return of their Rock and Read Festival, which will be taking place at The Rotunda this year. The purpose of the event is to promote a love for reading and literacy in our city. The event includes live story readings, poetry and music from the likes of The National Rifle, OhBree, Mike Bell & the Movies, Ted Nguyent and The Rock to the Future All Stars. Your donation goes directly to the organization for their programs, so come out, grab a book, hear some great local bands and support a great cause while you are doing it. The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St., 5pm – 10pm, $5, All Ages – Dan Brightcliffe
Night Panther Opening for Maria Minerva at KFN Sept. 15
Do you love sex? Do you love synths? Do you love sexy synths? Well, the guys from Night Panther are ready to team up and give you what you love. The group features members of White Birds/ex-Drink Up Buttercup, and will be sweeping you off your feet with their “Colt 45” jams. Because “it works every time” – aww yeah. Check out and download their latest offering below, which is a cover of Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks.” They’ll be opening for Not Not Fun seductress Maria Minerva tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. Some panties will be dropping this evening so have fun and wrap it up. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7:30pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
The Dude Hates Cancer Afterparty w/Orbit to Leslie, Cheers Elephant & Swift Technique at JB’s Sept. 15
Today, North Bowl hosts the 7th annual The Dude Hates Cancer bowling tournament, an event aimed at raising awareness and financial support for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Teams of six to ten people contribute a flat rate of $280 for three hours of bowling, in one of three waves beginning at 11:30am, 2:30pm, and 5:30pm respectively. The deal includes free shoe rental, a free participation t-shirt, a chance to win prizes and free admission into Jack Treehorn’s afterparty at Johnny Brenda’s. Last year’s event raised $83,000, and they plan to kick its ass in typical dude fashion upping the bar to $100,000.
The afterparty includes a triple threat – the cool, eclectic grooves of Orbit to Leslie, the psychedelic get-down pop-rock of Cheers Elephant, and the funkalicious sounds of Swift Technique closing the night out. Grab a white Russian, and let the party begin. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave, 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Weekend Warrior, September 14 – 16

It’s nice that you can always find a bunch of Philly area folks to rally around a good cause. And though we’re not sure what the Bombs and Bedlam: A Benefit Concert to Secure the Planet thingy is all about this Saturday at The Blockley, we damn sure know that they got some great local talent involved to show us a good time. The lineup consists of the always-up-for-fun guys and gals of Dangerous Ponies, Bucks County folk-hop outfit Illinois, retro rockers Juston Stens and the Get Real Gang, captivating folkies Spirit and Dust, and way rad Jerzey acts River City Extension and Brick + Mortar. Shall we say that this show is going to be the bomb? Sorry – yes, I do enjoy sounding like mom trying to be cool. The Blockley, 3801 Chestnut St., 8pm, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
