New Music Video: “Ebony Rose” – The Lawsuits

Posted on:

Check out the new music video from The Lawsuits for their track "Ebony Rose." The charming little ditty is off their new EP Numbers, which the band just released today HERE. The video interestingly creates the feeling of a rudimentary stop motion film from humourous clips of the ensemble. If you didn’t catch their surprise set on "Blackout Wednesday" at Fergie’s for Ron Gallo‘s Revue or if you did and simply can’t get enough of the rootsy five-piece, they’ll be performing Saturday, December 15 at MilkBoy Philly.

STS Opening for Cypress Hill at The Troc Nov. 27

Posted on:
There should be quite a battle at The Trocadero tonight when Cypress Hill rolls into the Victorian theatre. However, it won’t be among emcees. I’m guessing the notoriously tough security staff will have their hands full keeping control of the wild 420-friendly crowd. Well, if you plan on getting blunted outside and strolling in just in time for Cypress Hill’s set, I’d suggest that you make it in to catch this evening’s direct support Sugar Tongue Slim (STS). The Philly transplant, by way of Atlanta, has been building plenty of buzz and a following as well as showing off his versatility with his series of mixtapes flipping works of indie and mainstream artists and making the tracks his own. Though you may find him on stage opening sold out shows for notable acts like The Roots and Yelawolf, STS still continues to fly under the radar in his adopted hometown. It might be because you’ll more likely find him on the road making the rest of the world take notice than in the smaller local venues, but don’t sleep on this hidden gem in the hip-hop community. The Trocadero, 1003 Arch St., 9pm, $27, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

It is also available on cassette via Purr Tapes. Below are a few words that he shared about the release. Special thanks to Pasta Primavera for bringing it to our attention.

"Okay is the continuation from Tours’ previous EP, Stay. Stay dealt with the challenges of moving forward despite the difficulties of losing something dear to you. It’s follow-up is the realization that everything is Okay. The release conveys the importance of improving yourself and learning to let things go. Thank you for taking the time to listen."

Hound Supported by Ted Leo at Nacho House Nov. 25

Posted on:

If there’s any justice in the world, Perry A. Shall will be showered with applause, booze, and every form of holiday goodies tonight. His service to the Philly music scene is a gift that keeps on giving, especially with this evening’s musical Christmukkah bounty: not only is he rocking the Nacho House with his most excellent new project Hound, but he’s secured Ted Leo as the opener. Leo’s proclivity for randomly showing up amongst normal folks and fans to humbly bestow his awesomeness upon them rivals Bill Murray’s, and he’ll get an equally reverent welcome from the great, gritty West Philly crowd. Hound bears all the Shall trademarks: deft homage to classic garage rock, a slovenly, rollicking boogie, and impeccable arrangements that could win over even the most reticent. Rounding out the radness of this evening are amped-up angst-rockers Ghost Light, and Radiator Hospital, who have relocated to Philly from Grand Rapids, Michigan, which obviously is an all-around awesome decision. Nacho House, (Email Perryage@gmail.com for more info.), 7:30pm, $7, All Ages – Alyssa Greenberg

Mercury Radio Theater Presents “The Gobblepocalypse” at JB’s Nov. 24

Posted on:
A dark undercurrent sweeps through Johnny Brenda’s tonight as Mercury Radio Theater presents "The Gobblepocalypse." MRT has the knack for combining stalwart surf/punk instrumentation synching the fundamentally intense vibes of a thick rhythm section and guitar searing the ground that lies in its path. The band takes that “ready to launch” mentality and infuses a twisted cinematic horror narrative and other classics, but mismatched, yet well-placed tones build a scene right before your eyes. One can’t help buying in. Throw in burlesque interludes by Peek-A-Boo Revue‘s Lulu Lollipop, and this theatrical music escapade kicks it up a notch with a little va-va-va-voom. Six Acre Lake will open the show with heavy-handed mathematical guitar/percussion/synth approach, while the reinvigorated bizzaro cinema of Faquar Muckenfuss also sets the stage. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, November 23 – 25

Ortlieb’s Lounge will be welcoming in some darker vibes than they’re used to when Nothing and Night Sins both celebrate their latest releases tonight at the jazz-friendly venue. Led by Domenic Palermo, Nothing infuses some of the aggression that its members were influenced by while growing up immersed in the local hardcore scene yet their mellowed-out shoegaze soundscapes have a breath of maturity and contemplativeness that can only be discovered amidst a lifetime of hard living, which you’ll find on their latest EP Downward Years to Come (A389 Records). Night Sins, who are made up of musicians from Nothing, Mother of Mercy and Salvation, have recently crept into the earphones of the Philly music community with their take on the goth/industrial sounds of yore from the band’s first full-length album, New Grave (Avant! Records). It will certainly be a Black Friday in Ortlieb’s this evening. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. 3rd St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

New Track: “Hello, Traitor” – Psalmships

Posted on:
Below is the beautiful, heart-touching title track from Psalmships’ (a.k.a. Joshua Britton) latest EP Hello, Traitor, which he released earlier this week. The prolific songwriter teamed up with Brad Hinton to perform and record the four songs on the new record at the Sluice Box in Bucks County, PA.
