Port Henry recently unearthed a sonic capsule, which they’ve named BSL MSI. Assisted by electronic experimentation, there’s a light, tranquil ambiance with an unpredictable nature, found on the band’s latest release. Delicate grooves twist and turn through a key/percussion-oriented space. As the band works on a new record, these quirky, subdued recordings provide a strange bit of comfort.
New Music Video: “Really Fast Cars” – Don Babylon
Foul, the sophomore album from Virginia transplants Don Babylon, is scheduled for release on September 28 via Medical Records. Filmed and edited by Andrew Silverman (of The Retinas & Bigmouth Philly), the new video for “Really Fast Cars” occupies a carefree/braggadocious/sarcastic aesthetic, putting the songs casual imagery into visual form. Don Babylon is currently on tour with Car Seat Headrest and Naked Giants, which will be making a stop this evening for a sold-out performance at Union Transfer. (Photo by Michelle Singer)
New Music Video: “The Gray Tower” – Goshen Electric Co.
Strand Of Oaks’s Tim Showalter has joined forces with the surviving members of Magnolia Electric Co. to form Goshen Electric Co. as a tribute to Jason Molina. The collaborative project has recorded a pair of Songs: Ohia tracks, which will be released as a 7’’ on November 2 via Dead Oceans. Filmed by Colin Kerrigan & Rocco Avallone (Out Of Town Films), the video for “The Gray Tower,” with its behind-the-curtain, black & white setting, captures the genuine, heartfelt emotion and power of the song. It’s soulful, at-home folk that simply kicks ass.
New The Spirit Of The Beehive LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Hypnic Jerks is the latest album from The Spirit Of The Beehive, and is out now via Tiny Engines. Hovering between a laid-back, melodic cloud and dramatic shifts of intensity, the band finds a mechanism to bring down tensions without eliminating them. An eerie, warped element hangs in the periphery, creating a mesh between odd, groovy precision and gritty abruptness. You can catch The Spirit of the Beehive with Boston’s Pile on Thursday, October 18 at The First Unitarian Church.

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Gene Wildest
After learning the abbreviated origin of space-rock outfit Gene Wildest, you can’t help but take notice of the group’s storied past, and root for its continued success. The four-piece, which now consists of Brian Corbett (guitar/vocals), Rob Ealer (guitar), Sean Corbett (bass), and Dave Ashcraft (drums), recently won a heated race to be our Featured Artist(s), and we are happy to learn that the band has also been landing on the radar of nationally touring acts. But we DO NOT condone Corbett’s pickle habit (haha)! You can check out our latest interview with the Gene Wildest frontman HERE.
New Jo Kusy LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
The Vast Glissade, the latest album from Jo Kusy, slides into a hypnotic haze of psych-pop. Gliding in a daydream state, the songs musically achieve a relaxed joy. However, whilst hovering in the ether, hard-hitting, lyrical messages are dispensed. Balancing buoyant instrumentation with a gritty, riff-fueled core and pertinent universal themes, the album is a soothing sanctuary that veers from reality but still addresses it.
Weekend Warrior, September 14 – 16
The freak-folk collective of On the Water whimsically taps into one’s imagination. Ornate, tightly-bound instrumentation and refined harmonies create a nuanced sonic fabric – one that flourishes in its intricate attention to detail and simultaneously remains attached to its guttural, ground-swelling reality. The band accesses personal circumstances, while hedging toward an alternative fantasy. Tonight, On the Water will celebrate the arrival of their latest EP Failing Upwards, with a release show at West Philly’s The Mothership. They’ll also be supported by the tumultuously eerie punk of Northern Liberties, the glam-psych, space invasion of STARWOOD, and the funky dance-punk of Van Goose. – Michael Colavita

New Mothers LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Render Another Ugly Method is the new album from Georgia transplants Mothers, and is out now via ANTI- Records. Whether subtlety set adrift or racing toward an undeclared destination, the band occupies a semi-chaotic, heady space that follows Kristine Leschper’s vocal lead. There’s an unpredictability to the release, as the band shifts between a chilly serenity and frenetic flashes of energy. Supported by Mega Bog, Mothers will be headlining Johnny Brenda’s on Saturday, November 3.
New Track: “Ain’t Sh*t” – Bri Steves
As we await the debut album from Bri Steves, which is due out via Atlantic Records, her latest single “Ain’t Sh*t,” produced by BNYX stokes the fire. Suspenseful keys merge into a heavy, bass-forward beat, meshing with the rising artist’s confident, aggressive delivery. Unwavering while holding her ground, the local emcee easily separates herself from the pack. Steves is slated to appear at Wells Fargo Center on Friday, October 26, as part of Powerhouse 2018.
New The Retinas EP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Yellow Rocket, the latest musical vessel from The Retinas, was recently launched. Whether simmering in a stargazing state of reflection or surging toward the unknown, the power trio retains a gravitational pull. Disseminated from space, the garage rockers balance hushed valleys with adrenaline-laced peaks. Cultivating an ebb and flow between the here and the out there, Yellow Rocket sparkles on our radar.
New Track: “Yeah, You’re Running Out of Time” – G. Mervine
West Philadelphia Orchestra member/founder Gregg Mervine has branched out, releasing a collection of songs, titled Rise/Away, as G. Mervine. Percussion jumpstarts “Yeah, You’re Running Out of Time,” springing into an electro-folk hybrid. The breezy, optimistic setting is contrasted by the limited time construct of lyrics. Then, about halfway through, Yoomi Kwon’s cello and Amy Zakar’s violin venture into an expanse, aided by the bump of bass, creating a pleasant, layered effect.
