American Babies Opening for Jesse Malin & The St. Marks Social at JB’s Jan. 16
American Babies the creative off shoot of Brothers Past frontman Tom Hamilton makes a stop at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. With a revolving door of talented backing band members centered on the constant of Hamilton, American Babies play a brand of Americana grounded in a tight musical unit. It’s a sound that easily fits the barrelhouse to the backyard barbecue any and everywhere in between. Warm soulful vocals that connect both in tone and lyric, developing a comfortable layer of familiarity that is further reinforced by a rich driving groove on up-tempo songs or a slow and steady pace that takes the chill out of the air essence on the simpler ones. The energy is always there, whether it’s an internal yearning on an outward striving that keeps the musical wheels turning. American Babies will be opening for Jesse Malin & The St. Marks Social who take folky singer-songwriter material and push it forward with a punk edge. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita
New Video: “Gilly Bibbons Promo” – Toy Soldiers
Below is a promo video for Toy Soldiers‘ upcoming show on February 15 at Kung Fu Necktie with Goodnight, Texas and August John Lutz II (from Levee Drivers), which is being presented by The Swollen Fox. "Who is Gilly Bibbons?" Well, hopefully one of the members from Toy Soldiers or Levee Drivers, or maybe their pals The Lawsuits or The Kalob Griffin Band (who should be in attendance) will be sober enough to give you the real answer that evening.

Market East Opening for The Amazing at MilkBoy Philly Jan. 15
The Market East camp has been awfully quiet lately after bursting onto the Philly music scene early last year with their innocent retro sounds, three-part harmonies and self-titled debut EP. I often interpret that silence by bands (that aren’t about to breakup) to be time taken in order to work on new material, and possibly another recording, which seems to be the case for the acoustic trio. Tonight they will be breaking their silence in the New Year opening for Sweden’s The Amazing, who somewhat recently visited Philly on tour with fellow imports Tame Impala at Union Transfer. If you were shutout of that sold out show, then this evening is your opportunity to see if the Swedes can actually live up to their band name.
