Since its launch in 2007, KidRockers has spanned through 4 cities, providing a platform where families could be exposed to original indie music in an all-ages setting. And since then it has managed to bring in big name acts like Silversun Pickups, Datarock, Nada Surf, and locals like Bleeding Rainbow and The Spinto Band. And now Ape School is set to join that list of storied artists as multi-instrumentalist Michael Johnson carries on the series tradition of providing old music heads and new music heads some much-needed bonding time. Weekend Warrior, March 8 – 10
It’s kind of gloomy out today, and I’m feeling a little down. However, I know that there will be some good vibes emanating from PhilaMOCA tonight. Philly music community pals Norwegian Arms, Scott Churchman, Laser Background and Circadian Rhythms are ready to bring plenty of weird into the former mausoleum turned multipurpose art space. They’ll also be celebrating the release of Churchman’s cassette Ignore the Noise (Single Girl Married Girl Records). PhilaMOCA, 531 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21 + (Photo by Brandee Nichols) – H.M. Photo Recap: Obits, Creepoid & LE Yikes SURF CLUB at Underground Arts
Since winning our Best of 2011 Poll, Creepoid has added a new member Jeff White on slide guitar and guitarist Pete Joe Urban moved to San Antonio to be with his girlfriend while she finishes up her graduate degree (she’ll be done in May, and they’ll be returning to Philly soon) so performances by the full band have been few and far between lately. That is why last night was a real treat having them all together again in Philly tearing things up in the side room (our first time seeing a show there) at Underground Arts with Obits and LE Yikes SURF CLUB. Surprisingly, no instruments were destroyed; however, their set still remained as explosive and intense as ever. The band has been working on another album, and a lot of the new songs were on display. Expect a more psych rock feel containing Creepoid’s signature dark demeanor. Our favorite was the longest jam of the night which continually morphed catching us off-guard with each sonic shift. They currently don’t have a name for the song yet, but it will definitely be on the new album. The band seemed very excited about how the “medley” turned out in the studio. It was a fun evening, and you can checkout our photos from last night HERE. (Photo by Zach Blum)
Free Download: “Lioness” – Night Panther
Below is the latest track from Night Panther a shadowy, synth-heavy jam called "Lioness," which is also available for free download. The sexified four-piece will be performing at Kung Fu Necktie tomorrow night in support of Work Drugs, and then they’ll be making the trek down to SXSW next week.
Catnaps Hop Off at Glitoria March 8
Twee quintet Catnaps make an appearance at the Glitoria this evening. The group known for their cutesy, catchy self-revealing indie-pop concoctions appears to be evolving, meshing youthful naïveté with an edgy aggression that channels adolescent angst. It’s as if that sweet sound hopped off the clean curb and fell into the dirty street. While the music still retains the witty, charming vocals, the instrumental accompaniment is rougher and jaded around the edges employing a fuzzy grunge/garage aesthetic on their latest EP Shuteye. Creepoid Opening for Obits at Underground Arts March 5
Hankering for a quick fix of melodrama and some intense shoegaze-y psych rock? Then get your ass down to Underground Arts tonight where Philly’s own Creepoid will be opening for Sub Pop’s Obits. Their grungy, slowcore-inspired tunes will have you entranced in no time. The band is currently working on the follow-up (which will also be released via No Idea Records) to their impressive full-length album Horse Heaven. Also on the bill will be basement-dwelling surf rockers LE Yikes SURF CLUB, who spent last summer touring the country in support of their record Yikes (Grizzly). Yeah – once again, the weathermen were full of shit about snow coming our way so you have no reason to miss this show. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 7:30pm, $12, 21+ – Ed Newton
New Track: “Quit” – Restorations
Restorations just premiered another new track from their upcoming album LP2 (Side One Dummy) called "Quit," which you can listen to via AbsolutePunk.net. They’ll be celebrating the release of the record on Friday, April 5 at the First Unitarian Church, and you can also catch them doing an acoustic set for a Philabundance benefit on Thursday, March 28 at Yards Brewery.
New Video: “Peoples” (HotBox Session) – Cheers Elephant
Here’s a new session from our pals at HotBox Studios with Cheers Elephant performing "Peoples," the opening track from 2012’s Like Wind Blows Fire. The band is beginning an extensive tour tomorrow in Nashville that will end towards the end of April. They’ll be back in Philly on Thursday, April 4 to open for Darwin Deez at the First Unitarian Church.
New Music Video: “Sunset on High Street” – Work Drugs
The Work Drugs gang just shared a new Corey Haim-filled music video for the track "Sunset on High Street." It’s the first single off their yet untitled upcoming album scheduled for release this summer when they’ll be going on an European tour. You can download the song for free HERE. Work Drugs will also be headlining Kung Fu Necktie this Saturday, March 9 with support from Night Panther before hitting the road to the midwest this month.
Fear Tinnitus w/Heavy Medical, Xanax & Drums Like Machine Guns at KFN March 6
Sludge purveyors Heavy Medical are planning another ambush with their battalion of all things noise and mayhem. Ready for the promised destruction that could only be brought on by a bass guitar swallowing two drum kits? Yeah, most people aren’t. Along with them will be my new favorites, the ever so explosive Xanax. This project boasts a lineup featuring members of +HIRS+, Saetia, Des Ark, and Amateur Party, but despite the orgy of sound suggested through previous text, this band wants one thing: to burn down the building with its chunky, punching bass, violent guitars, and piercing howls. Also in tandem will be the brothers of noise Drums Like Machine Guns. Check out this blast beat brigade upstairs at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Please, don’t forget your earplugs. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 9pm, $3, 21+ – Ed Newton
Free Download: “Get Ready” – Free Energy
Free Energy just premiered a new track this morning called "Get Ready" that is available for free download via Stereogum. The song was written for comedian/writer DC Pierson’s sophomore novel, Crap Kingdom, which is about "a young man who discovers that he’s the Chosen One in a not-that-great magical realm." "Get Ready" is part of a compilation that will also be available for free download and will include contributions from Ted Leo, Jean Grae, the Rosebuds and others.
