Where Is My Mind?: Dangerous Ponies’ Chrissy Tashjian

Posted on:

After pulling back from the brink of breaking up, Dangerous Ponies have returned, refreshed with a wonderful new EP Tenderheart. The band just went on the first part of their current extensive tour, which included a stop at SXSW, and they are getting ready to head out on its second leg in support of their new album. But first, they’ll be celebrating the release of Tenderheart tomorrow night at MilkBoy Philly with family, friends, fans, freshly pressed 7” vinyl records and new bassist Andy Black (formerly of Nicos Gun). We had chance to catch up with Dangerous Ponies frontwoman Chrissy Tashjian to discuss the band’s trials and tribulations since the release of their self-titled LP and what’s in store for the future of one of our favorite indie pop outfits. You can read what she had to say HERE.

Laser Background Opening for Here We Go Magic at Underground Arts March 28

Posted on:

Laser Background mastermind Andy Molholt recently returned home after touring down to SXSW and back with his other project Norwegian Arms. Tonight he’ll be going underground, well, to Underground Arts – that is, when Laser Background opens for Secretly Canadian’s Here We Go Magic. I’m sure that Moholt will be plenty hyped up to play his own tunes and share some of his new material from his upcoming full-length album. So be prepared to match his intensity! Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $14, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Modern Baseball Hosting Emperor X at Golden Tea House March 28

Posted on:

Exposing yourself to so much music can leave you a bit exhausted, even somewhat jaded. Bands start to overlap, and sometimes they can seem somewhat stale, overdone, and somewhat indistinguishable from one another. You look for the subtle differences that separate acts. This problem doesn’t really seem to be the case with Philly by way of Maryland emo act Modern Baseball. Playing straightforward, chord-based music, the simplicity of it all is complemented nicely by tasteful guitar work. Their lyrics are often lamenting – subjects of failed relationships but with a certain resonating relevance that has bits of nostalgia that cut deep. Their LP Sports was released at the end of last year, and is already going through its second go-around with its re-release via Run For Cover Records. Check them out tonight at Golden Tea House in support of New Jersey emo/punk act Dads and acoustic punk/folk veteran Emperor X. Also making an appearance will be Philly faves the Stable Boys and resuscitated, energy-infused two-piece Omar. Golden Tea House, (Please contact one of the acts or the venue for more info.), 7:30pm, $5 – $7, All Ages – Ed Newton

Cerebral Jams From Nick Millevoi at The Khyber March 28

Posted on:

For the uninitiated, Nick Millevoi’s music – solo or with his band Many Arms – can seem about as accessible as a garden overrun with thorn-laden roses. Dissonance and high concept forays into multiple genres are the name of Millevoi’s game, but there are rewards for those who stick with him through the time-signature-defying workouts. Linive, due out this spring, is an astounding collaboration with the Ricart Quartet that finds Millevoi’s nimble guitar stylings buoyed by some truly ferocious avant-jazz drumming. It’s just one of many sides to this Tzadik Records alum, so don’t stop there. Millevoi is joined tonight at The Khyber Pass (who recently just opened their upstairs to live music again) by Drums Like Machine Guns and Heavy Medical, his brethren in arms, as far as the noisier ends of the spectrum go. The Khyber Pass, 53 S. 2nd St., 8:30pm, $7, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

New Video: Trippin’ Balls – Brother JT

Posted on:

Mornin’ y’all! We wanted to kick off your day with a hilariously warped new episode of Trippin’ Balls with Brother JT (a.k.a. John Terlesky) and "pianist extraordinaire Flip McNair (a.k.a. Mr. Unloved). They are also joined by special guest Ed Schrader. By posting this video, does it mean that we condone wakin’ n’ bakin’? Maybe. And a hit of LSD might be a good idea too. That is if you have nothing else to do but watch this episode over and over again for the next eight hours. However, most of us don’t have the time or the acid (get in touch if you do :o), but luckily you’ll still catch some visuals without any psychedelics – thanks to the work of Woodshop Films. (BTW: Brother JT has a new album titled The Sveltness of Boogietude coming this spring via Thrill Jockey.) Enjoy!

Weird Hot Wednesdays at KFN March 27

Posted on:

Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie is the inaugural Weird Hot Wednesdays, a monthly party being thrown by Philly’s own Weird Hot. I hear that Shawn Kilroy and crew desire to create a vibe similar to Black Lily at the Five Spot back in the day for the indie music community. This evening, you’ll be treated to two sets by the group with band members spinning tunes before, between and after the sets. Your admission will get you a free Narragansett, and there will also be drink specials provided by Sixpoints Brewery. Come out and support some folks trying to create something special for the local music scene – cheers! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $3, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

On Message w/+HIRS+ at LAVA Space March 27

Posted on:

+HIRS+ are nothing if not a timely act to go see at LAVA Space tonight, given that the country is anxiously awaiting the outcome of the Supreme Court’s hearings on gay marriage. Their bilious cocktail of grind, thrash and occult symbols is never anything but on message, and that message is one of unrelenting, politically-charged rage. Subjecting yourself to their monster opus/compendium The First 100 Songs, aside from feeling oddly purifying in its sheer violence, reveals a clever way with samples, a drummer straight from hell, and a truly rotten (in the best way) sense of humor. If the grind onslaught exhausts you, The Joint Chiefs of Math and Forest Kingdom are there, with slightly less punishing repertoires for you to take a breather. LAVA Space, (Please contact one of the acts or the venue for more info.), 8pm, $3 – $5, All Ages. – Alyssa Greenberg
