New Music Video: “Lioness” – Night Panther

Posted on:

Besides making some infectious, sexified synthpop tunes, local outfit Night Panther also have a flare for making hilarious music videos, as you may have learned from their first for the track "Fever," which you can view HERE. Well, they are back with another entertaining one for their song "Lioness" that parodies classic Jean-Claude Van Damme movies like Blood Sport and Kickboxer. The video was directed by Jon Anderson. Check it out below! Night Panther will be performing live on Friday, May 10 at Underground Arts for Vacationer‘s next Nude Beach party. (Poster Art by Jon Anderson)

Small Houses Opening for Sean Hoots at JB’s April 15

Posted on:

Originally hailing from Michael Moore’s hometown Flint, Michigan and now based in Philadelphia, Jeremy Quentin, a.k.a. Small Houses, is an indie folk artist and multi-instrumentalist who charmingly captures his surroundings in verse. Spinning tales full of honesty and gentle, pretty melodies, I’m sure that our gritty but beautiful city is providing plenty of material for his next release. Small Houses will be opening for Sean Hoots of famed Hoots & Hellmouth tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. Hoots has been taking a go of it on his own lately (which makes absolutely perfect sense since “Hellmouth,” a.k.a. Andrew Gray, left the group in 2011 to work on his solo project). The soulful Americana troubadour can still dazzle and delight crowds simply with an acoustic guitar and his much-beloved voice. (However, he will be joined on stage by Hoots & Hellmouth bandmates Todd Erkel and Rob Berliner.) The two acts have been on tour together since the end of March and things are going to get really intimate this evening when they make a stop home. They’ll also be joined by Mississippi duo Water Liars. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ (Small Houses Photo by Marencelest) – Q.D. Tran

S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. Wants to Save Mankind at the E Factory April 14

Posted on:

Sociopathic Time Altering Robot Warrior Of Organic Design, a.k.a. S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D., the prototype has been sent back from the future to alter the time continuum and save its doomed Planet Vitrus from their eventual destroyers, the Pathonians, with the band’s own brand of “Cyber Rock.” The local quintet harken back to the gloriously theatrical days of 70’s glam rock where showmanship ruled, which is often lost in modern day performers who simply act too cool for school to show any emotion and have fun on stage. A lot of thought and creativity has been put into this project, and you have the opportunity to experience it on the big stage of the E Factory tonight when they open for Mindless Self Indulgence. “If mankind is to have any hope of survival, you must attend. Mankind’s fate is in your hands.” Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St., $28 (+fees), All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Swearin’ Opening for Tenement & Diarrhea Planet at Glitoria April 13

Posted on:

Nostalgia tempered with fun awaits tonight at Glitoria, where Swearin’, originally from Brooklyn, hold forth with a brand of blissful punk overlaid with 90s indie that feels right at home coming from West Philly. Bear in mind, too, that they come from the vaunted P.S. Eliot, where vocalist Allison Crutchfield partnered with her twin sister to create a beloved feminist pop-punk outfit; now, it’s Allison and the very Doug Martsch-sounding Kyle Gilbride manning the helm of Swearin’, for many of the same joys they’ve offered in previous projects. They’ll be the fulcrum of tonight’s bill with badass local hardcore outfit Attitude Era (watch out for these guys), Tenement, Diarrhea Planet, and Ovlov. Glitoria, (Please contact perryage@gmail.com for more info.) 6:30pm, $7, All Ages. – Alyssa Greenberg

The Naked Sun EP Release Party at Fleisher Art Memorial April 12

Posted on:

The Naked Sun, while still a relatively new band (formed just two years ago in 2011), have managed to create a sound wise beyond their years. Keeping the melodies simple, but the multi-layered instrumentals result in rootsy music with calming complexity. Self-described as “honest rock,” the band gets its relatability from their folk-inspired notes, guitarist Tim Campbell can give a song a nice twang without steering too far into the backcountry. Campbell will also take up the keys on a song or two, lending toward the outfit’s soul. Lead vocalist, and additional guitarist, Drew Harris’ soothing croon and thoughtful lyrics add depth to the music, while bass by Eric Budesa and drums by Dave Gladney represent the backbone of each track – providing the song’s structure and helping to toe the line between folk and rock. Joining The Naked Sun for their Space, Place, and Time EP release party will be the soulful rock outfit, The Way Home, who’ll add a touch of blues to the evening. The Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St., $10 (includes EP & drinks), 8pm, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell

New Track: “Clover” – Bad Braids

Posted on:

Ugh…where did all the sunshine go? Well, we were reminded in our interview yesterday with On the Water’s Fletcher VanVliet that one of the most promising folk acts in Philly, Bad Braids, a.k.a. Megan Biscieglia, has a new record entitled Supreme Parallel coming out this spring on May 1 via Haute Magie. The Austin indie label recently shared a new track from the album called “Clover,” which we thought might be appropriate to bring a little hope to you on this dreary day.

Where Is My Mind?: On the Water’s Fletcher VanVliet

Posted on:

On the Water surprised us in 2011 with one of the most impressive local releases of that year with their debut EP Anchor. Born from the mind of Da Comrade!’s Fletcher VanVliet, this solo folk project has expanded to as much as a nine-piece plus special guests for the recording of the band’s first LP False Starts. VanVliet has been on the road performing as a trio for all of March and the beginning of April in support his new release. He’s currently making a pit stop home for a little recovery time and to celebrate his latest accomplishment with friends, fans and the rest of his band members tomorrow night at The Beaumont Warehouse before taking on the second leg of his tour. We caught up with VanVliet yesterday to find out more about the recording of False Starts, how tour has been going so far, and much more HERE.

Son Step Opening for Caveman at JB’s April 11

Posted on:

Son Step, a band consisting of Jon Coyle, Pat Lamborn, Chris Coyle and Matt Scarano holding down multiple duties, is an eclectic Philly act with leanings towards avant-pop. They’ve been building their reputation around town as a well-respected unit among artists in the local music community. The four-piece will be bringing their unique sounds to Johnny Brenda’s tonight opening for Caveman, who are former winners of The Deli’s Best of NYC Year End Poll and also most recently put out a beautiful self-titled sophomore LP via Fat Possum.
