Tutlie & Moon Bounce Opening for Superhumanoids at JB’s June 24

Posted on:

After dazzling us with their debut singles “Giantess” and “Freyja,” Tutlie will finally be dropping their first EP, Hush Up. The release is a companion to their upcoming full-length album, and will be available this evening in conjunction with the group’s show at Johnny Brenda’s opening for LA pop trio Superhumanoids. The band will be giving out handmade download cards to those in attendance. Also on the lineup will be Moon Bounce, a.k.a. Corey Regensburg, a local native who impressed multiple major music media outlets and blogs with his beautifully orchestrated debut EP Darn Your Best Frock in 2011. It was followed up by last year’s EP Wheelhouse, and tonight will be a good opportunity to hear what the inventive producer has been working on lately. Being able to find this much talent under one roof on a Monday night is just one of the many reasons why Philly’s music scene rules – so take advantage of it! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ (Tutlie Photo by David Turcotte) – H. M. Kauffman

Xaphoon Jones Will No Longer Be Performing Live w/Chiddy Bang

Posted on:

There have been rumors hovering around the Chiddy Bang camp about the future of the group. The duo recently issued a statement to clarify these “rumblings.” Xaphoon Jones, a.k.a. Noah Beresin, will no longer be performing live on stage or in front of the cameras with Chiddy, a.k.a. Chidera Anamege. Instead, Beresin has decided to take a step back from the limelight and concentrate on “being a producer.” Below is what they had to say about the situation.

What up everyone?

There have been some rumblings the past few months so both of us wanted to take the time to set the record straight.

Our good friend Noah B, affectionately known as ‘Xaphoon Jones’ to many, has decided to step back from the artist role to focus on what he really loves – being a producer. After last year’s album release and subsequent tours supporting Wiz Khalifa and Fun, Noah realized his heart was in the studio – where he belonged – and not on stage and in front of cameras, etc. Honestly, this shit is a grind, and as his friend, I respect where his is coming from.

Don’t get it twisted – we are definitely still homies – and Noah will still be making beats for Chiddy Bang (in the same way it’s happened since 2009), but the main difference will be him not coming on tour. You can definitely still expect him to play a musical role in upcoming material as we embark on a new journey to bring dope music to all corners of the globe. We’re both excited for what the future holds and can’t wait for you to hear what we have in store.

Much love
Chiddy & Xaph

Cough Cool Record Release Show at KFN June 22

Posted on:

Cough Cool, a.k.a. Dan Svizeny, may have a Misfits homage as the moniker in which he records and performs music under, but his menace grows from psych-rock seeds rather than campy punk trappings. Brandishing a grimacing psych-garage-shoegaze-pop hybrid, always seemingly played with eyes at half-mast, Cough Cool will be celebrating the release of his latest full-length album 29 (Bathetic), which is his best to date, tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. The Fishtown watering hole will surely be blown out in awash of sonic haze and surprisingly pretty pop melodies. So embrace the fuzz, and share it with someone you love! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

Psalmships Opening for Steve Gunn at JB’s June 22

Posted on:

Ever since he released his solo masterpiece Boerum Palace, New York guitarist Steve Gunn has been receiving an endless amount of praise, which also holds true in the Philly music community. So it’s not surprising that the Kurt Vile affiliate has chosen Johnny Brenda’s to have a record release show for his latest effort Time Off. It’s the first album where the guitar legend leads an enigmatic trio. And while Gunn and New York’s Endless Boogie will be making this show one to see, local folk songwriter (and oddball tweeter) Psalmships, a.k.a. Joshua Britton, will most definitely impress as well. And as he gets closer and closer to releasing his latest EP Some Ships, Britton has also been refining newer songs at live shows. So tonight may be a suitable preview. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, June 21 – 23

Posted on:

If you’re a city dweller like myself, summertime in Philly is actually more enjoyable on the weekends as the city empties out while the rest of the local natives head towards the shore. Who needs the beach anyways? Especially when you have the surf rock tunes of Philly’s own Dry Feet to help bring in the waves of good times. The hard-rockin’ trio will be laying down plenty of sweet guitar licks this Saturday at Underground Arts when they open for sci-fi lovin’ Man or Astro-Man? and Miami’s Jacuzzi Boys. Trust me. With a show like this, you’ll never miss all the fist-pumping at the Jerzey Shore. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 7:30pm, $15, 21+ – Alexis V.

TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb Opening for Lily & The Parlour Tricks at Underground Arts June 21

Posted on:

It’s hard to imagine ever needing someone to sum up your craziest nights and the miserable mornings after, until hearing TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb.  They put all the mess and mistakes of that one night into song and make you want to relive it all over again. Playing blues through a veil of morning whiskey breath and stale cigarette smoke, vocalist Dan Bruskewicz’s rough croon offers clarity through the haze. Instrumentals that include violin, harmonica and upright base all crash together in crafted chaos, the end result being a raucous and strangely uplifting good time. Also on tonight’s roster is Lily and The Parlour Tricks, a band rooted in Americana who also know how to swing.  Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., $10, 8pm, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell

Elevate w/Worshyper at PhilaMOCA June 21

Posted on:

If you’ve ever experienced Keith Hampson’s harmonious project Power Animal performing live with multiple musicians, then there’s a good chance that you’ve caught the members of Worshyper behind a drum kit, guitar or xylophone. And now as a part of Hampson’s ambitious record label, Human Kindness Overflowing, and charitable organization that strives to team with artists and musicians in an effort to raise money for special causes, Marie Nicolo, Kevin O’Neill and Matt Hampson have managed to come into their own since the tail end of 2012. And if songs like “Knot” are any indication, the group’s upcoming follow-up to their Happened EP should help to elevate them to a whole new level. So tonight’s show at PhilaMOCA will be a good chance to catch this quirky, fledgling R&B trio. They’ll also be joined by Fishtown rockers Sun Cinema, who will be opening the festivities, and Brooklyn brother duo Katabasis. Philamoca, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $7 – $10 Donation, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Inaugural Make Music Philly Happening Today

Posted on:

Originally started in France on June 21, 1982 (Summer Solstice) and known as La Fête de la Musique, the free citywide music festival encourages open participation from amateur and professional musicians. The U.S. adopted this concept in 2006 as National Music Day. You should expect to see a whole bunch of performances in traditional and non-traditional spaces throughout town as part of the inaugural Make Music Philly, which is spearheaded by WXPN, in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia and other organizations. It’s Friday, and the weather is predicted to be beautiful outside so take the time to walk around, meet some friends for happy hour, or simply play hookie from work/school, and catch some live music performances from artists like Norwegian Arms, Arc In Round, Toy Soldiers‘ Ron Gallo, Levee Drivers‘ August John Lutz II and many others. To learn more about where and when you should be at today, check out Make Music Philly’s official schedule HERE.
