Bardo Pond Joined by Major Stars at PhilaMOCA June 27

Posted on:

It’s always a treat when the legendary Bardo Pond takes the stage, especially since it doesn’t happen as often as we’d like anymore. The Philly psych rock veterans have been melting faces and scrambling brains for 20+ years now, and tonight they’ll be hosting the loud expansive jams of Boston’s Major Stars. It will definitely be a good evening to “turn on.” Also ready to make some noise is fledgling local outfit Static Mountain. Spirits will be awoken at the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art! PhilaMOCA, 531 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $7 – $10 Donation, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Benefit for Boston w/shorty boy-boy, The National Rifle & Cruiser at North Star Bar June 27

Posted on:

Tonight North Star Bar is hosting Benefit for Boston, a show whose admission will go to the One Fund for Boston Marathon victims. The bombing that occurred this year during the marathon on April 15 killed 3 and injured hundreds. So to show some brotherly love for Beantown while enjoying some fine local music at the same time head on over to the Art Museum area where the tri-fold bill will include shorty boy-boy the moniker of Joshua Pannepacker intertwining humorously twisted lyrics that tends to escalate toward powerful rockers with fire-starting guitar licks and a casual grooves that are easy to slip into. The National Rifle approach their tunes with a bright pop-rock appeal founded in clear vocals and a backend that continually pops. Embracing a combination of percussion/bass/synth that instills a natural dance sensation with an interstellar space nod. Speaking of smooth, the breezy Cali-cool pop of Cruiser rounds out the night touching notes of surf rock including natural vocal harmonies, memorably crisp guitar lines and a tumbling backbeat. We highly suggest that you get there early because the first hour gets you free beer and specials on well drinks. All that and a good cause – you really can’t go wrong! North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Track: “#VoiceMemo vs. MF Doom” (Demo) – Dewey Decibel

Posted on:

We shared with you earlier this year Bahamadia’s "Dialed Up," which was produced, written and recorded on her handheld mobile device. Well, here’s another example of mobile technology being used to make music these days. Check out a new demo from Dewey Decibel called "#VoiceMemo vs. MF Doom" that he recently recorded on his iPhone. Kind of makes all these Kickstarter campaigns popping up and begging for thousands of dollars to produce an album seem a bit wasteful and unnecessary, don’t ya think? That goes for music videos too. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Adam & Dave’s Bloodline Opening for Mark Mulcahy at JB’s June 26

Posted on:

Delving into a slightly darker, heavier approach to songwriting with psychedelic guitar work splattered all over their latest EP 2×2, Adam & Dave’s Bloodline released their most impressive body of work to date earlier this year. The album was recorded on analog between Big Mama’s Warehouse and MilkBoy Studios, and was released via local indie label Founding Fathers Records. Tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, the Philly quintet will be opening Mark Mulcahy, former frontman for Miracle Legion and Polaris (who was the house band for the television series The Adventures of Pete & Pete). Also conjuring up beloved sounds from the past this evening will be Joey Sweeney & the Long Hair Arkestra. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

New Radiator Hospital LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

We’ve grown to become big fans of the songwriting by Michigan transplant Sam Cook-Parrot, a.k.a. Radiator Hospital. He manages to string together earnest, heartfelt/heartbreaking lyrics while his music remains uplifting, which is why we made his last EP Some Distant Moon our December 2012 Album of the Month. Well, we are obviously excited to hear that he’ll be releasing a new full-length album on vinyl, backed by a full band, entitled Something Wild on July 15 via Salinas Records, who is also home to Swearin’s rad self-titled LP. You can stream Radiator Hospital’s record below and "name your price" for it HERE.

Free Light Heat In-store Performance for Debut Record Release at AKA Music June 25

Posted on:

For those who were around when Philly wasn’t quite the thriving hotbed of musical talent it is today, the breakup of psych-rock outfit Mazarin was a great loss to the local indie music community. Especially since it led to the hibernation of any new material from the group’s frontman Quentin Stoltzfus for about 7 years, until he surfaced last summer with the lovely single “And The Birds” and a show at Fleisher-Ollman Gallery under his new moniker Light Heat. Well, today marks Stoltzfus triumphant return with the release of the project’s debut self-titled LP available via Domino/Ribbon Music. You can celebrate with him and his band, which also consists of Walter Martin (The Walkmen), Drew Mills (Blood Feathers), Sam Cohen (Apollo Sunshine/Yellowbirds), and Mickey Walker (Mazarin), when they play a free in-store performance at AKA Music this evening. AKA Music, 27 N. 2nd St., 7:30pm, All Ages – Q.D. Tran
