The Deli Philly’s July Album of the Month: Golden Age – Grandchildren

Posted on:

Golden Age, Grandchildren’s follow-up to the band’s 2010 debut LP Everlasting, is the type of album that immediately grabs your attention. As the electro-acoustic outfit systematically builds layers of instrumentation, the six-piece adeptly finds a balance between their chant-like harmonies and groove-generating percussive nature.

Co-produced by Man Man drummer Chris Powell and Bill Moriarty (Man Man, Dr. Dog, Hoots & Hellmouth, etc.) and released via Ernest Jennings Record Co., Golden Age creates an uplifting, wakeful state with the record’s opener – appropriately titled “Sunrise,” while its title track “Golden Age” follows nicely as once again the groove is masterfully woven into an orchestrated sound that highlights the members’ surreal ability to approach complexity with a listener-friendly mentality. Album standout “No Way Out” begins with a darker key-created tone before falling into a deep bass/percussion groove. Aleks Martray’s acoustic guitar adds texture before multi-instrumentalist Tristan Palazzolo’s brass work blasts through and comfortably finds its place. Grandchildren lulls the listener into a Hawaiian, tropical dream-like state with the intro to “Where’s the Knife” before transforming what seems to be a rather sinister line on paper into a charmingly beautiful chorus. “Forward” is one of those songs that seems to sneak up on you with its artillery marching style percussion, serving as a catalyst while opening the doors to the band’s instrumental playground with bright horns, spacey synths and slick guitars – all fitted into a tight, organic package without feeling heavy or overly crowded.

With Golden Age, Grandchildren displays the power and strength that thoughtfully creative pop music can carry. It’s both an album that digs deep into their capable musical arsenal and still maintains a highly energetic cruising flow. – Michael Colavita

Unpredictable Magic Provided by Marshall Allen & Extreme Fishkin at The Fire June 30

Posted on:

Whether it’s been from a memory of yesteryear that goes far beyond space or time consisting of him jamming alongside the prolific jazz composer Sun Ra or during his current role of fronting the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra, you have seen/heard incendiary saxophone impresario Marshall Allen perform for a number of occasions throughout the year. But it’s been quite some time, since you’ve had the chance to experience this interplanetary jazz master perform solo. Well, that is exactly what will be happening tonight at The Fire on this very rare bill, which will also feature jazz-noise artisans Extreme Fishkin. And given the improvisational talents of both acts and the number of musicians that they’re connected to, there’s bound to be plenty of unpredictable magic in store. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave, 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Stinking Lizaveta Keeping Philly Weird at KFN June 29

Posted on:

Cult favorites Stinking Lizaveta will be taking on late night duties tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. The power trio recorded their 1996 debut album …Hopelessness and Shame with legendary producer Steve Albini, and they’ve spent nearly two decades inspiring the local music community with their unrelentingly passionate live shows and technical prowess. Combining stoner-sludge metal with boogie-jazz, the band has been a beloved staple in keeping Philly weird. They’ll be joined this evening by socially conscious, hard-rockin’ feminist duo Trophy Wife, whose drummer Katy Otto recently posted, “From now on, when someone asks me why I moved to Philadelphia I am going to say Stinking Lizaveta.” Expect plenty of good vibes and bludgeoning beats! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 Front St., 11pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

This Saturday night at Johnny Brenda’s, there will be a celebration for the release of Pillar Without Mercy from Deveykus, a new project from trombonist and Pew fellowship recipient Dan Blacksberg with partner-in-crime and alien shredder Nick Millevoi, guitarist Yoshie Fruchter (Pitom), bassist Johnny DeBlase (Many Arms), and drummer Eli Litwin (Normal Love, Intensus). Inspired by acts such as Sunn O))) and Earth, the quintet meshes doom metal with traditional Hasidic melodies. Their debut album is available via John Zorn’s avant-garde music label Tzadik, as part of its “Radical Jewish Culture” series. Deveykus will also be joined by fellow Philadelphians Cleric and labelmates Les Rhinocéros. This will surely be an evening of music that you have never before experienced! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. On the Move w/DRGN KING & Busses at PhilaMOCA June 28

Posted on:

Dominic Angelella leads the eclectic indie-rockin’ DRGN KING performing tonight at PhilaMOCA. The group blends elements of rock, electronica and hip hop, and the mix results in a rambunctious brand of music that harnesses a groove and fuses it with Angelella’s “round up the troops vocals.” It’s a sound that’s easy to back – part sleazy, part stealth and perpetually on the move. The psychedelic-tinged rock trio of Busses builds off comfortable, familiar vibes and then breaks away into lesser-traveled territory. These two locals will be combining forces this evening with Vermont power trio Bird Name. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $8 – $10 Donation, All Ages – Michael Colavita
