R5’s Free Concert Series w/Work Drugs & Norwegian Arms at Morgan’s Pier July 10

Posted on:

If you don’t have plans or the cash to hit the big Belle and Sebastian/Yo La Tengo show tonight at the Mann Center, then I better see you at Morgan’s Pier for R5’s free concert series with local indie darlings Work Drugs and Norwegian Arms. Let’s be honest. Summertime and drinks by the water surrounded by yachts is what Work Drugs’ music was made for, well, that and sweet, sweet love-makin’, which might happen too if you come out. ;o) The guys and gal recently dropped their rad new full-length album Mavericks so this evening is a good opportunity for you to hear your favorite tunes from it live and grab your own copy directly from the band. Opening the hang will be weirdo folksters Norwegian Arms, who play with such passion that you can’t help being pulled into their world. You’ll also get a chance to check out what they’ve been working on lately since the release of their debut LP Wolf Like a Stray Dog. It’s a locals only night at Morgan’s Pier – just the way that we like it! Morgan’s Pier, 221 N. Columbus Blvd., 9pm, Free, 21+ (Photo by Brandi Lukas) – Q.D. Tran

New Track: “Head On” – Man Man

Posted on:

Man Man premiered a new track called "Head On" earlier today via Pitchfork. It also comes with a lyric video, and will appear on their upcoming album On Oni Pond, which is due out September 10 via Anti-. The record was once again produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit), and judging by this single, the "doom wop" sounds from Honus Honus’ project with Islands’ Nick Thorburn, Mister Heavenly, has seeped into this latest release.

New Univox LP Available for Streaming & Purchase + Free Video Game App

Posted on:

If you were wondering why Univox has been so silent lately, then check out the new album that they just dropped earlier today entitled The Altec. The guys recorded the LP in the new studio that they built in the basement of guitarist/vocalist Josh Jones’ home with his wife Sarah. The record was mixed by Night Panther‘s Farzad Houshiarnejad. Univox also created a video game app called Tour of Fire, which is not all that surprising given Jones’ addiction to playing them. You can download the app for free HERE. Enjoy!

Batty Keeping Anchored at The Mitten July 8

Posted on:

Batty is a fledgling punk outfit hailing form West Philly/New Jersey that appears to still be evolving into their own. From their “shitty home recordings for reference,” you can hear angsty guitar riffs accompanied by primal trashcan beats and blown-out vocals. However, with their most recent live offering, “livin’ a lie,” which was posted to the group’s Bandcamp and recorded on May 15, 2013 at WKDU, the band demonstrates a more patient sound that is anchored by dark, heavy sludge-metal guitar work that journeys through the realm of psych rock. Batty participated in this year’s resuscitated Ladyfest Philly, and you can catch them tonight at West Philly DIY space The Mitten where they’ll be sharing the bill with South Carolina’s Chemical Peel (Ride the Snake Records) and local Goth punks Teenage Priests. The Mitten, (For more info, contact grace.ambrose@gmail.com.), 7pm, All Ages – Alexis V.
