The National Rifle Opening for Bad Things at MilkBoy Philly July 28
The National Rifle released their latest full-length album in January of this year, titled Almost Endless. Nine tracks of dance-infused progression, sure to take the MilkBoy crowd back to the scenes of certain1980’s hot spots. Although the band’s uplifting guitar rhythms and toe-tapping drums keep the tone light, it’s songwriter Hugh Morretta’s somber tone that betrays the music’s underlying maturity. His lyrics express lessons learned, especially the inevitable nature of growing up – what we can lose and gain in the process. Multi-layered not only instrumentally but lyrically makes The National Rifle, a band who’s been together for some time and grown together as a group, still hold that same joy for the music as greener bands. Speaking of green – actually, maybe a nice tomato red – is new outfit Bad Things featuring champion snowboarder Shaun White on guitar. Just starting off their summer tour, the band has released a teaser of their forthcoming album Caught Inside. Building vocals backed by cascading guitar riffs and reverberating drums make for triumphant rock and roll. Milkboy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8pm, $12 – $15, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell
Heavy Cuts w/Bad Energy at Beaumont Warehouse July 27
Heavy cuts by local natives Bad Energy buzz with finessed anxiety and visceral lyricism. With fans still reeling from the recent release of their cassette demo, the band’s latest suggests that an evolution of sorts is taking place within the Philly hardcore punk scene. Partially nostalgic of hardcore punk’s yesteryears, Bad Energy’s sound is a hybrid comprised of stylistic and instrumental aspects of synonymous genres like garage, lo-fi, or a sedated rendition of noise-core. Abrasive yet melodic tracks like “Numbed” and “Mind Hole” start off with charged riffs and strategically fuzzy vocals. In traditional adherence to punk’s penchant for brevity, shorter tracks like “Mondo Cane” and “ Community Creeper DFC” (clocking in at 53 seconds) create a swirling sense of anguish followed by liberating resolve by way of frantic fretwork and crashing cymbals. A plausible cure for the plight of modern 20-something angst, Bad Energy’s empathetic anthems of frustration motivate catharsis and the occasional slam dance. Catch their live set tonight at West Philly’s Beaumont Warehouse with Dopestroke, Slit Lips and Spain’s La Urss. Beaumont Warehouse (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info), 7pm, All Ages – Dianca Potts
Weekend Warrior, July 26 – 28
Between the larger scale version of the Mad Decent Block Party, which unfortunately, you have to pay to get in now, as well as a crazy after party at Morgan’s Pier, and an impressive XPoNential Festival lineup that has teamed up with the likes of Bob Dylan and Wilco, you have plenty of reason to get your fest on this weekend. But it’s the impressive Americanarama portion of the XPoNential Fest and a key headlining spot for Dr. Dog before they officially release their next album B Room over the fall that has us sold on giving XPN’s annual festival top Weekend Warrior billing. And while both nights inside the Susquehanna Bank Center (which also features My Morning Jacket and the Lumineers) will be fun, catching locals like The Districts and DRGN KING as they share billing with notable artists such as Phosphorescent and Dr. John inside Wiggins Park is another thing that makes this event worth taking a ride on PATCO or a ferry. Wiggins Park and Susquehanna Bank Center, 1 Market St, Camden, New Jersey, (7/26 – 7/28) 5pm – 10pm, $25-125, All Ages – Bill McThrill
New Videos: “Coast to Coast” (Live) & “Peace and Quiet” (Live) – Waxahatchee
Pichfork.tv just shared two videos of Waxahatchee performing "Coast to Coast" and "Peace and Quiet" at their festival last weekend, which you can check out below. And you can see them live for free next week on Wednesday, July 31 at Morgan’s Pier opening for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Enjoy! (Photo by Joshua Mellin)
Happy Hour w/The Eeries Opening for Fletcher C. Johnson at KFN July 26
Kung Fu Necktie hosts an early (5pm) show today with a pair of artists slated on Burger Records in The Eeries and Fletcher C. Johnson. The Eeries provide a minimalist retro-garage vibe taking surfer guitar riffs, weaving in triangular harmonies and an omnipresent groove. Their songs burst like a quick refreshing wave of energy with the vocals grabbing you like the undertow, while your body catches sun-tanned rhythms. Brooklyn native Fletcher C. Johnson will join them bringing his narrative-injected pop-rock. Happy hour and tunes sound like a great way to start off the weekend! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 5pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Reissued Track: “Slowly Dark” – Nick Millevoi
Here’s a bit of drone and noise for you called "Slowly Dark" from one of our favorite avant-garde guitarists Nick Millevoi. The track originally appeared on his 2012 album In White Sky (Flenser Records), and is being reissued as part of a split single with Dutch improv sax/drum duo Dead Neanderthals, who Millevoi will be touring with this fall. He also has two shows in Philly on August 8 at The Random Tea House as a duo with Jesse Kudler and August 10 at Ortlieb’s for his Ricart/Millevoi Quartet record release of Haitian Rail (Gaffer Records). They will most likely be his last local ones before hitting the road in Europe for nearly a month during September/October.
New Music Video: “Roughing Up the Painter” – Honey Radar
Below is a new music video from psych rock outfit Honey Radar for their song "Roughing Up the Painter," the opening track to their latest EP Mary Plum Musket. The video looks to be assembled with old found television footage. You can still purchase the band’s cassette (only 100 white chrome copies) via local indie label Treetop Sorbet.
Little Big League Record Release Show at The Fire July 25
Tonight, The Guild presents the record release party for Little Big League’s full-length debut These Are Good People, which official comes out August 6 via Tiny Engines. The album was co-produced/engineered by Craig Hendrix (Auctioneer). Although this is the local foursome’s rookie LP effort, the collective unit brings a wealth of experience that shines through. Michelle Zauner expresses the spectrum of lyrical emotion through her vocals. Whether vulnerable or aggressive, the tone is an imparting message that is always clearly reinforced with a unified instrumentation – percussion that can roll until it needs to bash and guitars that cruise smoothly laying lines until that proper moment when it kicks into overdrive revealing a jagged edge. They will be joined by the Cali-cool, easy-going sounds of Philly’s own Cruiser, the fuzzed-out, raggedly rockin’ energetic duo Slow Animal, and fledgling outfit GUNK. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Michael Colavita
New Track: “Jam Forever” – Harsh Vibes
Noisy stoner-metal psych rockers Harsh Vibes aren’t afraid to keep things loose and downright evil, which is evident in their new nearly 12-minute track "Jam Forever" off their latest EP Dead Collective Soul. They’ll be attempting to melt faces once again this week laying down some heavy riffs at Kung Fu Necktie tonight.
New Eric Slick Film Soundtrack Available for Streaming & Purchase
Dr. Dog‘s Eric Slick shared a bit of performance art with us during his set in January at PhilaMOCA for Tuesday Tune-Out.
