Prowler Opening for Wild Cub at MilkBoy Philly Aug. 11

Posted on:

Tonight at Milkboy the oddball grooves of Prowler take the stage. With a combination of fragmented lyrics, gritty backend, and an electronic pulse weaved into their songs, Prowler creates an energetic and sweaty dance party. They combine tasty layers of guitars, quirky vocals, and percussion to create their unique blend of boogie-rock. “Satan don’t take no junk mail, ya heard?” Headlining the show, hailing from Nashville, is the electronic dance outfit, Wild Cub.  Also on the bill is homegrown Nashville indie-folk singer/songwriter Natalie Press. Milkboy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Ricart/Millevoi Quartet Record Release Show at Ortlieb’s Aug. 10

Posted on:

Avant-garde guitarist Nick Millevoi will be celebrating tonight at Ortlieb’s the release of his new collaborative album with Ed Ricart entitled Haitian Rail, which also features Travis Laplante and Ches Smith and is being released via Gaffer Records (vinyl) and New Atlantis Records (cassette). This will be the debut performance of the Ricart/Millevoi Quartet, and they’ve made some changes to the band with the addition of Dan Blacksberg on trombone and Kevin Shea on drums. It will most likely be Millevoi final performance in Philly before his European tour in September/October. There will also be a rare electric guitar set by Eric Carbonara and a solo performance by Lantern’s Zachary Fairbrother so come out and enjoy an evening of guitar wizardry. Johnny Showcase – the Cure for Your Funk at JB’s Aug. 10

Posted on:

One week in Philly, one week of sun then right back to unpredictable rainfall – it’s enough to put anyone into a vitamin-D deprived funk, and the only way to counteract one of such magnitude is to double the dosage. Specifically, with the brand of mirror-ball funk and blues that Johnny Showcase has honed during his tenure in the local music scene. Coupling the seduction of 70s-era soul with witty lyricism, Johnny and his band of disco gypsies prove that seriously good music doesn’t have to take itself too seriously. David Sweeny, the man behind the leisure-suited alter ego, and his commitment to the character transform the stage into a cabaret. Also on the bill is New York’s, Mother Feather, which is self-described as “cock-rock” fronted by 100% woman, Ann Courtney. Both bands have powerful characters at their helm – powerful enough to banish any rainy-day funk (unfortunately, their talents don’t extend to the weather itself). Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $12-$14, 9pm, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell

Weekend Warrior, August 9 – 11

Posted on:

We’ve certainly been getting our fair share of talented musician transplants. One of the finest lyricists from the new crop of artists that we’ve come across is former Grand Rapids, Michigan native Sam Cook-Parrott, a.k.a. Radiator Hospital. The heart-on-his-sleeve singer-songwriter captures true raw emotion in such beautifully poetic verses that could easily make the burliest man’s man shed a tear. However, these touching lyrics can easily be lost on some of the tracks of his new LP Something Wild (Salinas Records) because of the jangly, upbeat strums of major power chords from his guitar and his new driving rhythm section. Radiator Hospital will be celebrating the album’s release tonight at West Philly’s Great Indoors alongside labelmates/housemates Swearin’ and Batty, who are also dropping a demo release. Don’t sleep on this one! Great Indoors, (Please contact ghostlightbooking@gmail.com for more info.), 7pm, $5 Donation, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Psychic Teens Record Release Show at Long In The Tooth Aug. 9

Posted on:

It’s been a fun ride watching the rise of local gothic post-punk trio Psychic Teens. From the air of mystery around their debut tracks “YUNG” and “CbbK,” to their victory in our Featured Artist(s) Poll, to the band becoming one of the Top Performers in our annual Best Emerging Artist Year End Poll, it’s always been apparent to our staff that Psychic Teens is a seriously dark band with a bright future. And now with the group stepping into the national spotlight as one of Spin’s “Best New Artists of August 2013,” it won’t hopefully be long before the rest of the world takes notice and joins us on this ride. If you haven’t yet, then you can start this evening when they celebrate the release of their latest full-length record COME (SRA Records) at Center City’s Long In The Tooth. You still have an opportunity to be ahead of the rest of the curve by grabbing your copy tonight before its official release next week. Long In The Tooth, 2027 Sansom St., 9pm, Free, All Ages – Alexis V.

Dry Feet Opening for Hunx & His Punx at PhilaMOCA Aug. 9

Posted on:

Raw unfiltered aggression that only builds additional momentum developing a full downhill avalanche of adrenalized sound with a surf rocking aesthetic, that’s what Dry Feet bring to PhilaMOCA tonight. The trio takes surf-rock ideals and speed them up creating a punk/surf hybrid that is energetically heavy. Taking moments to unleash quick raunchy guitar runs, while consistently running at a pace that suggests “get on board, or get out of our way.” They begin a show that also includes West Coast garage/punk outfit Hunx & His Punx who are supporting their freshly released LP Street Punk. Eccentric DC rockers Chain & the Gang will make an appearance, as will Brooklyn noise rockers Hunters. It’s a stacked bill at the Moz this evening. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7:30pm, $12, All Ages – Michael Colavita

The band will be performing a free all-ages in-store show (2pm) this Saturday, August 10 at AKA Music with Whirr, sponsored by Philly-based music blog YVYNYL, and both acts will reconvene that same evening at Kung Fu Necktie for the after-party of The Is Hardcore Fest.
