Night Market and ART/GAGE w/Strand of Oaks, Norwegian Arms, Night Panther & Circadian Rhythms at 9th & South Sts. Aug 15

Posted on:

South Street comes alive tonight with food, art, music, culture, and more as it pays host to both Night Market and ART/GAGE. The Food Trust will have its usual barrage of nearly 80 food trucks descending upon the iconic strip for what is guaranteed to be the largest edition of this culinary event yet. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and a number of other art collectives and galleries will provide a plentiful showcase of local artists during ART/GAGE. But of course, both events converging upon the same area wouldn’t be complete without a carnival of circus performers and local musicians to provide some enlightening entertainment. The 9th Street stage starts off strong with the vibrant, throwback indie pop tunes of Circadian Rhythms, and is followed up by the soulful, sex pop vibrations of Drink Up Buttercup/White Birds alums Night Panther. Add in the impassioned weirdo-folk of Norwegian Arms and a headlining set from buzz-worthy folk maestro Strand of Oaks, and you have an evening of music that is not to be missed – seriously! Lithuania Reunite & Still Feeling Oh So Good at KFN Aug. 14

Posted on:

Multi-instrumentalist Eric Slick continues to remain one of the most prolific musicians in our music community. The body of work that he has amassed over the past few years with Dr. Dog as well as his collaborative and solo efforts is rather mind-boggling. Well, this evening, he’ll be teaming up with old pal/bandmate Dominic Angelella (of DRGN KING), another tireless Philly musician, and dusting off some old garage-pop tunes that they created together as the band Lithuania. After revisiting their 2010 EP Heavy Hands, the songs have definitely withstood the test of time. Have they written any new ones together? I guess that you’ll have to swing by Kung Fu Necktie tonight and find out what the band of "local weirdos" have been up to lately. Don’t worry – it will still feel oh so good. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

The New Black Debut EP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

We’re pretty impressed with the debut self-titled EP from The New Black, a new project from Edison‘s Alex Savoth. In the 4-song release, the power trio finds a nice balance of rock ‘n’ roll, hooks, melodies and noise that contains elements reminiscent of bands like The Killers, Metz and Creepoid, which is obviously a good thing if we’re talking about them. You can stream the album in its entirety below.
