Posted on:

Michael Johnson continues to impress with the wave of psych-pop tunes from his project Ape School while providing some seriously oddball song titles. Here’s a new music video for his track "Fly Your Bullshit To The Moon" from his latest release Quitting Time. It was produced by the rad production crew Woodshop Films, the people behind Deli fave Trippin’ Balls with Brother JT. Ape School will be opening tonight at MilkBoy Philly for buzzing Canuck rocker Mac DeMarco.

The Fantastical World of Buried Beds at JB’s Aug. 29

Posted on:

Within the next few weeks, the weather will change, schools will open, and summer will bow to fall. Knowing this may create the need to run far, far away. But there is another way to escape without resorting to exercise: Delve into the fantastical world of Buried Beds. Taking inspiration from childhood fairy tales, the group weaves these stories into song, peppering them throughout each track. Lead vocalist Eliza Jones tells such tales with striking balance and clarity. Her voice, accompanied by the rise and fall of varied instruments, drives the narrative forward. The music of each song takes on a new chapter, drawing on different instruments for the most accurate illustration. The band’s upcoming album will continue to embrace fantasy, digging even deeper into folk tales of old. Titled In Spirit, the LP doesn’t come out until September 24 via Devinyl Records, but this evening’s live appearance at Johnny Brenda’s should help to ease your craving. Headlining the bill is LA artist Chris Cohen and his contemplative take on soft rock. At times, his vocals take second stage to the music; however, his lyrics still resonate. Also set to open the night will be Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s Alec Ounsworth. While summer comes to its inescapable end, take solace in some fine tunes ready to carry you into the fall. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $10, 9pm, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell

Work Drugs just posted a new track, "Modern Living," and their signature found footage music video. It also came with a quote from Tom Wolfe (below). They’ll be performing their first all-ages show on Friday, September 27 at the First Unitarian Church.

"I think every living moment of a human being’s life, unless the person is starving or in immediate danger of death in some other way, is controlled by a concern for status."

R5’s Free Concert Series w/Pissed Jeans at Morgan’s Pier Aug. 28

Posted on:

Matt Korvette’s stage presence is probably the best thing about a Pissed Jeans show. He’ll scream in your face, kick you in the head, and wear your shoes that fell off during a stage dive. His antics may be a bit over the top to some, but to Pissed Jeans fans it’s a haven. The band’s recent LP Honeys came out in February of this year – full of loud instrumental explosions and noisy tidal waves of aggression. Tonight at Morgan’s Pier as part of R5’s free concert series, Pissed Jeans will be demonstrating why they are the most badass act to call Philly and Sub Pop home. Morgan’s Pier, 221 N. Columbus Blvd., 9:30, Free, 21+ – Rachel Barrish

It’s been pretty quiet in the camp of The Interest Group, except for a handful of shows lately. New Japanese Breakfast Album Available for Streaming

Posted on:

Little Big League‘s Michelle Zauner just shared a new solo record that she put together under the moniker Japanese Breakfast. She wrote and recorded a song everyday in the month of June [with the exception of two covers – PAWS’ "Sore Tummy" ("Day 15") & Liz Phair’s "Chopsticks" ("Day 23")], and will be releasing portions of it very soon on cassette via Ranch Jams (her favorites are "Day 5," "Day 6," "Day 10," "Day 22," "Day 28," & "Day 30"). You can listen to the 30-song project entitled June in its entirety below as well as read what Zauner had to say about it coming to fruition.

I had just finished writing and recording a record with my band Little Big League (littlebigleague.bandcamp.com) and was experiencing difficulty writing new material. The band wasn’t really doing anything because we were exhausted. We weren’t playing many shows to save up for touring a lot when the record came out.

On May 30th I had a dumpling party at my house where I invited all of my friends to come over and make dumplings. We set up Christmas lights in my backyard and all sat around a lawn table drinking beer and scooping small spoons from a big pot of stuffing and folding them into little dumpling wrappers. I invited Rachel Gagliardi from Slutever and we talked a lot about feeling stuck creatively. I suggested that we start a blog. The conceit was that we wrote, recorded and posted one song every day for the month of June. Two days later there was:

The most important part of the blog was learning how to practice forgiveness. This Isabel Allende quote I read on some blog– "show up, show up, show up, and after a while the muse shows up, too." that seemed relevant too. Instead of sitting down and creating a list of rules (I’ve written too many songs in the key of D, no more finger picking, no verse chorus structure, etc. etc.) that completely inhibited me from writing, I just had the pressure of needing to have a finished product by the end of the day to motivate me. Despite my busy work schedule, social obligations, even if I only had ten minutes of free time during the day, they would be spent making sure I got my post for the day.

While there are definitely songs I find completely unlistenable and all around awful, I was very happy with a lot of the material I produced. I plan on developing quite a few with LBL for our second LP. I highly recommend the project to anyone who is feeling creatively uninspired. Habituation is the key.
