Marc Neibauer Won’t Fall Apart at JB’s Sept. 27

Posted on:
Marc Neibauer, formerly of Eat Your Birthday Cake , headlines the evening tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. With the freshly released LP Don’t Fall Apart, Neibauer demonstrates a knack for creating comfortably easy-coasting melody that mesh well with his conversational vocal style. When coupled with distorted guitar and percussion that provides a constant pulse but reaches a fever pitch in opportune moments, it’s a smooth surface with an edgy underbelly. The dreary noise-folk of Scott Churchman and the weaving acoustic psych-pop of The Fantastic Imagination are also set to perform along with Baltimore folk-pop trio Other Colors. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Chris Kasper CD Release Party at WCL Sept. 27

Posted on:
Twanging, soulful Philly singer/songwriter Chris Kasper hits World Café Live tonight debuting his new heart-heavy album Bagabones. Based on its first single, “Head Above the Waterline,” expect shivers down your spine and a tug at your heartstrings this evening at his CD release party. Warming up the stage are the lilting, folk-pop sounds of Hezekiah Jones fronted by songwriter, Raph Cutrufello and the lyric-less guitar styling of Jason Laughlin and The String Gliders. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 8pm, $10 adv/$12 door All Ages (Photo by Lisa Schaffer) – Maggie Grabmeier

Free Downloads: Hopscotch Fest (King’s & PoB Day Party) – Spacin’

Posted on:

Our favorite garage-psych band Spacin’ made the trip down to Raleigh, NC’s Hopscotch Fest last month, and NYC Taper was there to capture it. The band performed two sets during the festival – at King’s on September 6 and the Paradise of Bachelors Day Party at Louise "Scotty" Stevenson Amphitheatre on September 7. You can download both of those sets HERE, as well as stream "Ego-Go" from King’s and a new song "Gary In The Universe" from the PoB Day Party below.

Commonwealth Choir Opening for Twin Forks at North Star Bar Sept. 26

Posted on:

Twin Forks, the new project of emo indie heartthrob and lead singer/guitarist of Dashboard Confessional Chris Carraba, hits the North Star Bar for their Philly premiere tonight. But it will also be a big show for former Deli Philly Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners Commonwealth Choir, as it will technically be the release party for their debut EP Shirtless, which they just shared a couple days ago. And if you purchased a ticket in advance off their Bandcamp page, you’ve probably listened to the EPs vibrant tracks a number of times now as it was part of the group’s pre-sale package deal that they were running. However, even if you didn’t, tonight will be the perfect time to experience why the band has been gaining a nice amount of buzz in a short amount of time. North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 7 PM, $13.50 – $16, All Ages – Bill McThrill

New Track & Music Video: “Bellport Bay” – Work Drugs

Posted on:

Funny – we were just thinking last night that Work Drugs have their first all-ages show at the First Unitarian Church tomorrow with Lockets and Bridge Underwater so they be releasing a new song and video to promote it. And of course, we found them this morning in our email. It’s a laidback jam – even more so than the usual Work Drugs number, and this time, the band took footage from the 1992 stinker Captain Ron, featuring one of our least favorite actors Kurt Russell and a comedian who hasn’t made us laugh in a long time, Martin Short. There are also guest vocals on the track from Philly native Ryan Williams. You can download "Bellport Bay" for free HERE.

Debut GUNK LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

We’ve been coming across the name GUNK on numerous DIY show bills for months now, but couldn’t find their music anywhere. Well, check out the psych-tinged indie-rock outfit’s surprisingly melodic yet fuzzy debut full-length album Gradual Shove! It’s available for purchase via local indie label Ranch Records.

Laser Background LP Release Show Opening for Darwin Deez at JB’s Sept. 25

Posted on:

Laser Background commemorates the release of the band’s first full-length album Super Future Montage via La Société Expéditionnaire. Opening for the eccentric indie dance popsters Darwin Deez, the Andy Moholt-led four-piece delivers alluring rock-pop songs characterized by Moholt’s distinct vocal style and distorted image-generating lyrics met with a touch of carnival-esque creep-ride that nearly comes off the rails, but inevitably rights itself. This ability allows Laser Background to playfully toe the threshold of psych-pop establishing their signature sound. Vincent Cacchione-fronted r&b/alt-pop outfit Caged Animals round out the bill, supporting their freshly released In the Land of Giants. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

YIKES the ZERO Opening for The White Mandingos at KFN Sept. 25

Posted on:

Emcee/producer YIKES the ZERO is a low-key fella. He doesn’t go around taking every chance to promote himself like other rappers who are always waiting to retweet every mention of their handle. Instead, he unassumingly goes about his business everyday while continuing to create some seriously unique tracks. He’s nearly finished with the follow-up to his slept-on 2012 release A Kid And His Monster, and you’ll get a taste of what he’s been working on lately this evening when YIKES opens at Kung Fu Necktie for The White Mandingos, featuring legendary founding member of Bad Brains Darryl Jenifer, emcee Murs and Sacha Jenkins SHR. Also on the bill are hard-hitting, politically-charged locals The Might Paradocs. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $12 adv/$14 door, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

New Track: “Two Bridges” – Avery Rosewater

Posted on:

Avery Rosewater shared a new song called "Two Bridges" last night. Led by Julien Rossow-Greenberg of Arches, you might notice the use of a lighter hand with reverb and delay on the vocals for this latest in comparison to previous works, providing a more radio-ready track. We’re really digging the searing guitar jam to close things out. The band plans to have their debut cassette EP out by late fall of this year. You’ll have two opportunities to catch Avery Rosewater live in the near future in Philly – this Friday, September 27 upstairs at Kung Fu Necktie and Sunday, October 6 at Boot & Saddle opening for Elf Power.
