The Deli Philly on XPN Tonight!

Posted on:
Howdy Folks!

I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be a guest DJ tonight on XPN. John Vettese was nice enough to invite me in to chat about local music and The Deli Philly’s upcoming 5th Anniversary Bash this Saturday, October 5 at PhilaMOCA with Night Panther, Literature and The Homophones. I’ll also be spinning tracks from some of my favorite emerging Philly artists. Tune in and check out what rad music I have in store for you and what I said in our session while under the influence (hopefully John cleaned some of it up for the FCC – I can swear like a sailor sometimes ;o). The Philly Local show will run from 9pm – 10pm, and my segment will start around 9:10pm/9:15pm. If you are not near a radio at the time or simply don’t own one, you can also stream it via XPN online.

Much love,

New Music Video: “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” (D’Angelo Cover) – Pattern is Movement

Posted on:

Here’s an abstract new music video from Pattern is Movement for their panty-dropping cover of D’Angelo’s "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," which premiered yesterday at Stereogum. The track is the B-side to their new 12" single for "Suckling," off the duo’s long-awaited forthcoming album scheduled for release in 2014 via Hometapes. They’ll be headlining for the first time in a while on Thursday, October 24 at Union Transfer with support from The Spinto Band, Norwegian Arms, Worshyper and the WYLDSTYLE DJs.

New Track: “Detroit Diamonds” (Sacred Strays Cover) – Radiator Hospital

Posted on:

After releasing a full-length album, Something Wild (Salinas), this past summer, Radiator Hospital is already back with a new EP entitled MALL OF AMERICA. The four originals and two covers were recorded this summer and early autumn in Sam Cook-Parrott’s bedroom. Here’s his lovely rendition of Sacred Strays’ "Detroit Diamonds."

Mary Lattimore and Jeff Zeigler Opening for Ed Askew at PhilaMOCA Sept. 29

The skillset and indie street cred of a team like Mary Lattimore and Jeff Zeigler scores pretty high if one were to keep it. Together, they instinctively play off each other’s plucks and drones weaving them into otherworldly soundscapes while rendering audiences silent and captivated, already strapped in to accompany them on their journey. For fans of avant-garde ambient drone, the wait for their debut release will probably be too long. However, until then, I am sure that you’ll find them as the go-to support act on interesting bills such as the one tonight at PhilaMOCA opening psych-folk vet Ed Askew’s record release show. After all, no show is ever really the same with the improvising duo. Also on the lineup will be one half of The Baird Sisters, Laura Baird. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $7 – $10 Donation, All Ages – Alexis V.

The National Rifle Opening for Braids at The Boot & Saddle Sept. 28

Posted on:
The National Rifle pop their cherry tonight at South Philly’s newest music venue The Boot & Saddle. The local four-piece has gone through an evolution sonically with their latest release Almost Endless, produced by Miner Street’s Brian McTear. The band has embraced the interplay between guitar and synth moving more towards a New Wave vibe, sounding less like a runaway jet-fueled rocket ship, which is actually a good thing. They seem to be expending that extra, saved energy towards fine-tuning their songwriting craft. They’ll be opening this evening for buzzing Canadian avant-popsters Braids. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 9pm, $10 adv/$12 door, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Weekend Warrior, September 27 – 29

Listening to the songs of Alabama-by-way-of-Brooklyn-transplant, Waxahatchee, is getting a glimpse of her soul. Katie Crutchfield’s style is fuzzy, lo-fi (even on the primarily acoustic tracks), but her voice cuts through the melody, revealing a slight southern lilt and a whole lot of honesty. It’s easy to imagine Crutchfield as a friend, her lyrics read like a conversation – the kind of talk that happens in the dwindling hours of darkness, fighting heavy lids and sharing hazy secrets. The same cathartic lyricism exists with the night’s other local act, Trophy Wife. Except with their songs, there’s no gentle romance – just two exposed, beating hearts. Katy Otto and Diane Foglizzo take their incredible vocal range and pair it with an unapologetic outlook on the world. They test themselves and their listeners, to face, head-on, what makes them uncomfortable. Belted over heavy guitar lines and crashing drums, their music will cut to the bone. Both acts and Wisconsin’s Tenement lead into Sunday evening’s headliner at the Church, New Brunswick’s own Screaming Females. The Female’s brazen punk style has garnered them a large following over their seven years, but their musical integrity hasn’t strayed. Frontwoman, Marissa Paternoster, owns the stage with her own brand of might and fury unleashed through her magnificent guitar work and vocals. While each act carves their own musical style, there’s no doubt they’ll all leave a mark. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 8pm, $10 adv/$12 door, All Ages – Shaylin O’Connell

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Young Pilgrims

Posted on:
Rambunctious Young Pilgrims “is a U.S. karate pioneer, and the founder and head of Yoshukai International, a world-wide organization of Yoshukai Karate schools.” Not really – but we’re sure that they’d welcome karate dance moves at their performances. The power trio is made up of high school pals Sean Brown, Jesse Appel and Zack Abel, who came together after the break up of their previous bands, and you can learn more about the group in our Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner interview HERE.
