1994! Enjoy the Violence at The Barbary Oct. 20

Posted on:
Combining both American and European influences, 1994! is a loud, celebratory, free-form car crash of punk that somehow manages to be thoughtful and under spoken at the same time. With downright searing guitar lines and vocals that turn on a dime from melancholy reflection to full-bore screaming, the duo is as violent as a band can get without actually burning down the venue. They’ll be joined by fellow local two-pieces +HIRS+ and The Joint Chiefs of Math as well as metallic screamo quartet Cassilis, making for one intense way to end your weekend. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 6pm, $10, All Ages – Daniel Ludwig

Oldermost Aging Gracefully at The Boot & Saddle Oct. 19

Posted on:

Ever since they released their debut full-length I Live Here Now with the help of recording audiophile Jon Low of Miner Street Recording (The War on Drugs, The National, etc.), who is currently working on The Menzingers’ next LP, Americana rock five-piece Oldermost has managed to mature their sound and unleash something that is complex and exciting. South Philly’s Boot & Saddle will be the perfect intimate venue for listening to incendiary songs like "Close to the Fire" and "Once I Left." And it will also be a great venue to catch the musings of multi-string virtuoso Jesse Sparhawk. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St, 9PM, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Bloktoberfest 2013 at South St. West Oct. 19

Posted on:

Bloktoberfest returns to South Street West again for another block party filled with craft beers, food trucks, arts and crafts, and local music. This year’s beer lineup will feature harder to find selections for early arrivers, a huge station of pumpkin beers, and will even include an Oktoberfest-style ale brewed by Round Guys that’s exclusive to the festival. While South Street West restaurants like Rex 1516, Govinda’s, and Magpie show what they have to offer; food trucks like The Cow and the Curd, Lucky Old Souls, and Vernalicious will be parked to serve the masses. Alec Ounsworth and the rest of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will be the main attraction this year. But the Jamaican Jerk Hut stage will also feature the jam-filled funk of Swift Technique and the Carnival suitable tunes of Alo Brasil. Meanwhile, the 16th & South Stage will rock with the harmonious sounds of Andrew Lipke & the Azrael Quartet, the blues rock frills of New Pony, and more. Bloktoberfest, Broad to 18th & South Sts., 12pm-8pm, Free, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, October 18 – 20

Posted on:
For those of you who were smart enough not to head up to NYC this weekend for CMJ, I look forward to seeing you tonight at Johnny Brenda’s for The Lawsuits’ release celebration. The local four-piece has been garnering much praise from major music media outlets for their most recent album Cool Cool Cool, and this evening is a good opportunity to congratulate the lady and gents and hear how the new LP transfers to a live setting. Please take a look at our recent interview with The Lawsuits’ Brian Dale Allen Strouse below, and make sure to swing by JB’s where they’ll be joined by pop-rock trio The Fleeting Ends and buzzing high schoolers The Districts, who should probably have a sleepover party in the venue’s green room after the show since they’ll be back on stage tomorrow evening opening for the sold-out White Denim show. Expect tonight to be a love fest full of Philly folkies. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Dreambook Opening for Break It Up at KFN Oct. 18

Posted on:
After releasing their first, full-length album, Only Shadows, earlier this year, Dreambook is back this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. Their sound is a lo-fi shoegaze, but within the fuzzed-out guitar and distorted vocals lays a heavy-handed drum. This mix of obscured and distinct sounds gives the music an almost ominous feel. Listeners must push through the forceful drum to get to the band’s thoughtful lyrics, making their impact even more satisfying. They open for indie-pop/rock trio Break It Up. Over the summer, the band released an eponymous LP full of fun and infectious tunes. While their music comes off as innocuous yet driving power-pop, it’s their lyrics that really pack a punch. Both bands are more than what they seem, making the live stage a perfect place to discover their distinct sounds. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+- Shaylin O’Connell

Where Is My Mind?: The Lawsuits’ Brian Dale Allen Strouse

Posted on:
The Lawsuits have been steadily building their reputation in the local music community as a rollicking live act. However, with their latest LP Cool Cool Cool, which was produced by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man, Grandchildren, etc.), the band has stepped up their game in the recording studio. Armed with their finest album to date, The Lawsuits will be celebrating its release tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. We caught up with frontman Brian Dale Allen Strouse to chat with him about the making of Cool Cool Cool, how to write a love song, and much more, which you can check out HERE.

New Music Video: “Cloud 9” – Reek

Posted on:

Here’s a moving and pretty adorable new music video from Reek (a.k.a. Rookie McFly) for the track "Cloud 9," which is off his forthcoming LP F.a.n.T.a.s.y. that will also have collborations with Philly hip-hop vets Freeway and Reef The Lost Cauze. The single and video is dedicated to his cousin Raheem "Muck" Williams, who had passed away from a fatal car accident. It was directed by Quo Productions’ Chop Mosley and Sanfordd Jenkins. You’ll also notice South Philly’s Beautiful World Syndicate and Lorenzo’s getting a little love in the footage. Also some love goes out to his mom for sporting a Nirvana t-shirt. Enjoy!

Psychic Teens Go Underground at Yarga’s Basement Oct. 17

Posted on:

Locals Psychic Teens are the kind of band that made stereotypical 1950’s housewives faint. Fresh off their sophomore release COME (SRA Records), the group’s music is an application of the most self-aware sort of psychedelic post-punk drenched in the reckless abandon of 80’s metal – specifically, imagine Bauhaus and Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet in a blender. Psychic Teens are bringing their uniquely grungy, wry and downright furious brand of prog-punk to Yarga’s Basement, nestled in our favorite Penn fraternity, in what is sure to be an all-out blitzkrieg on your ability to hear the next day. They’ll be joined by Michigan’s Brief Candles, the recently re-formed Oh, Adeona, and You’re Fired, a brand new endeavor born from Philly noise-rock specialists Heavy Medical. BTW: If this lineup doesn’t get you there promptly on time, there has also been a promise of something special for the first 30 people in the door. Yarga’s Basement, (Please contact yargaproductions@gmail.com for more info.), 9pm, All Ages – Daniel Ludwig

The first will be his album The Middle Distance (which was recorded between 1979 and 1988), then Group Motion (a live recording of a collaboration with a Philadelphia dance troupe using two of the rarest synthesizers in the world, the Buchla Music Easel and the Buchla 700 series), and finally the double LP Music for Dance and Theater (which was also recorded between 1979 and 1988). Below is the opening track from The Middle Distance called "Club Revival Performance."
