New Video: Mausoleum Party, Episode 1: Zoo – PhilaMOCA Presents & Announce Details About the Mausoleum X-mas Party

Posted on:

We certainly don’t shy from the weird at The Deli, and neither do our friends at PhilaMOCA. Well, with their first event and episode of Mausoleum Party, an in-house variety show that you can watch below, they definitely tested our boundaries of weird and how long we could watch a "man" strut around in high-heels and a ball-hugging leotard using a distorted kidnapper’s voice while covering dance-pop ditties. The video features skits and musical performances by Velvet Crayon, Charmaine’s Names, and Ms. Teena Geist. Inspired by a number of classic public access programs that include TV Party, The Scott and Gary Show, and The Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson Program, PhilaMOCA will be holding a monthly Mausoleum Party starting this month on December 20 when they transform the multi-purpose art space into a winter wonderland. The next event will feature Thunderlips & the Ultimate Males performing their Christmas rock opera "Tim Allen and Adam Sandler in the Santa Claus 4: I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Santa," quirky singer-songwriter Keyboard Cathy, and the guest house band The Happy Birthday Jesus Band. Yeah, it’s going to be another weird one, folks.

New tadoma LP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Here’s a new LP of soundscapes entitled Nascent Zones from ambient music producer tadoma, a.k.a. Joe Patitucci. The tracks on the album were recorded between 2007 and 2012, and will eventually be released via Data Garden, a local electronic indie label and event production collective that Patitucci also helps run. (BTW: For today only to celebrate Cyber Monday, all releases on Data Garden are available for "pay what you want" HERE.) Below is an explanation from tadoma about the meaning behind his album’s title.

"The name Nascent Zones comes from my roommate, Jon’s theory that vibes can be described as nascent zones. Since normally, I think of my music as a place or zone you enter and these zones I am making available are somewhat unfinished, it only seemed appropriate that I use this name. Dive into these vibes and if you find a zone, let me know. Peace"

The Love Club Album Release Show at PhilaMOCA Nov. 30

Posted on:
If you were ever able to inflict a band with a case of multiple personality disorder, The Love Club would be the result. Hearing them play is more or less sitting down for 8 or 9 different performances, as they slide between blues, grunge, indie, psychedelic, and hard rock on a song by song basis, all with an overarching sense of wildeye’d crazy. Between hypnotizing instrumentals and David Esparza’s soulfully kinetic vocals, they’re like a cross between early Velvet Underground and the entire soundtrack of Pulp Fiction. The Love Club will be celebrating the release of their new album Pearls Dissolve In Vinegar tonight at Philamoca, and if the lineup is any indication, the whole evening should be some kind of trip. They’ll be joined on the bill by Alumbrados, featuring members of Bardo Pond, and twisted punk outfit Space Drugs, as well as stand-up by Matt MccCusker. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10/$12 (w/CD), All Ages – Daniel Ludwig

Vilebred Opening for Hezekiah Jones at JB’s Nov. 30

Posted on:
After spending a day with family and copious amounts of food, Sam Vile is following in the steps of his much-lauded brother Kurt. With his band Vilebred, Sam delivers thought-provoking, snarky-laced lyrics placed on an evolving musicality that varies from heavier down and dirty grunge-oriented space-rock to floating open-ended melodic rockers that are further elevated when his half-spoken/sung vocals reach smooth-yet-snarly peaks. Since the textured instrumentation provides an artful environment for the lyrics to reside, Vilebred doesn’t merely tell a story; it transports you to a place. They’ll be direct support this evening opening the for inventive folk explorations of Raphael Cutrufello, a.k.a. Hezekiah Jones. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 N. Purling Hiss Rip & Stitch Rock ‘n’ Roll at KFN Nov. 30

Posted on:
Purling Hiss’ unique downcast psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll will turn your downs up and your ups down, hurling you toward infinity with guitar solos that rip you apart then carefully stitch you back together. Their fourth LP Water On Mars came out earlier this year on Drag City, showing a Purling Hiss that continues to ooze and crack, ricocheting between sludge, shoegaze and sunny guitar rock. They’ll be headlining tonight at Kung Fu Necktie with local pals shimmering garage-pop trio Amanda X and Space Breaker, whose lo-fi fuzz-rock will have you thinking it’s summer 2010. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Ali Carter

Weekend Warrior, November 29 – December 1

Ape School gets put to death at Boot and Saddle. DRGN KING and Lux Perpetua will be there to witness and toll the bell.” Well, it might be the end for the live band as head primate Michael Johnson starts his own shrewdness by welcoming a tiny ape of his own to his family and drummer Eric Slick gets ready for his move to North Carolina; however, you can still expect to hear more recordings from Johnson because recording is still an addiction that he has yet a “desire to control.” The death of the live band is also uncertain, but you definitely won’t be seeing them perform again for a “very long time.” It’ll be a bittersweet celebration at the new South Philly venue, but come out and raise a glass to some amazing musicians as they get set to embark on new life journeys. Cheers, fellas! The Boot & Saddle, 11131 S. Broad St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

Night Panther Opening for Foxes at JB’s Nov. 29

Posted on:
If you had as lazy a Thanksgiving as we did, you’ll be itching to peel your body off the couch and deliver yourself to Johnny Brenda’s tonight for a concert of up-and-comers starting with local area darlings and Deli favorites, Night Panther. Their self-proclaimed brand of “sexy pop” makes for a uniquely danceable and atmospheric show, and tonight’s set should be no different. Headlining the evening is the 22-year-old Brit popster Louisa Rose Allen under her new moniker, Foxes. After the explosion of success from her vocals in Zedd’s “Clarity” and her debut single “Youth,” Foxes stops in Philly to wind down her U.S. tour before she heads back to the U.K. in 2014. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Free Download: “Where Did They Go” – Khari Mateen

Posted on:

Khari Mateen has been steadily building his reputation as a producer in Philly’s hip-hop community. However, the classically-trained musician and multi-instrumentalist has also continued to forge out on his own. Here’s a track from his latest EP Qualia: Fall that demonstrates Mateen’s diverse ear as he blasts through the rollicking garage-blues number called "Where Did They Go," which was created to help draw attention to people suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). You can stream the single below and download it for free.

The group will be wrapping up their most successful year to date among friends with shows on December 6 at Kung Fu Necktie and December 31 at MilkBoy Philly. New Track: “Fire in the Arcade” – STS

Posted on:

We’re looking forward to plenty of heavy drinking with family and friends as well as some tasty food to help cure us of our eventual hangovers. We wanted to start the morning right (or keep last night’s bender going) with the latest flip of Arcade Fire’s "Reflektor" from our favorite hip-hop transplant STS, a.k.a. Sugar Tongue Slim, called "Fire in the Arcade." We’re sure that you’ll find some more familiar samples throughout this jam, which was produced by BearOne. STS will be sharing the bill tonight at The Boot & Saddle with Thundercat (Brainfeeder), Ebony Joi, and Son Little (Anti-), the new project from Roots/rjd2 collaborator Aaron Livingston. Enjoy!
