Wander Through the “Magical World” of Mike Bruno + the Magic Family Band at KFN Dec. 18

Posted on:

Philadelphia has already built quite a reputation of nurturing the freak-folk genre by harboring such acts as Espers and Fursaxa. Mike Bruno + the Magic Family Band continue to help carry that torch with their revolving cast of hippiefied musicians. When on stage, they perform as if in a trance-like state causing you to question whether its from a music- or drug-induced place. The mystical group recently released a new full-length album A Magical World of Animal and Spirits last month via Austin indie label Haute Magie, who was also home to band member Megan Biscieglia’s beautiful 2013 release Supreme Parallel, under her moniker Bad Braids. They’ll be wandering through their "magical world" tonight at Kung Fu Necktie alongside locals Seismic Thrust, Reading, PA’s L’Astronaut and Seattle’s Wind Burial. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St. 8pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

New Track: “But You Know That” – Manors

Posted on:

As the year comes closer to the end, it has caused us to reflect on all the music that we’ve come across thoughout 2013. And we’ve also been discovering some hidden gems that might have been overlooked with the massive amount of music floating through the internet. Here’s a simple but lovely track from Manors that has some damn sweet hooks called "But You Know That," which appeared on their LP Fit In (Eat A Book Records). The lo-fi bedroom-pop project is led by singer-songwriter/guitarist Dayna Evans, who is also backed on the recordings by Cat Park (Amanda X, Bandname) on bass and Evan Bernard (The Weaks, ex-Dangerous Ponies) on drums. Manors are currently recording an EP so expect to hear some new material from them in 2014.

Debut Folkadelphia Compilation Available for Streaming

Posted on:

Folkadelphia, the XPN radio show, concert promoter, in-studio session and brainchild of Fred Knittel, posted its new sixteen-track compilation Folkadelphia Sessions Volume One for exclusive streaming earlier this morning over at Spin. While we are a bit disappointed to see that something which derived its name from "Philadelphia" doesn’t actually have any of the city’s artists as part of its inaugural run (and we have a ton of good ones), the release does contain recordings from standout indie artists like Angel Olsen, Jessica Pratt and Laura Stevenson. You’ll also be able to download it for free next week, or you can take a listen to any of the Folkadelphia sessions in their entirety and download them for free HERE.

New Video: Sunday Video (Rookie) – Allison Crutchfield (Swearin’)

Posted on:

Rookie posted an episode of their Sunday Video series yesterday featuring Swearin‘s Allison Crutchfield. In the footage, she shares why she always believes "every band she’s been in has been the one she thought would stay together forever" while performing stripped-down versions of a new song called "Loretta’s Flowers," which she also talks about, and the title track from her band’s 2011 debut What a Dump EP.

Screw Your Workweek w/Radiator Hospital at Golden Tea House Dec. 16

Posted on:
West Philly via Michigan recording artist Sam Cook-Parrott, a.k.a. Radiator Hospital, hasn’t really been living in Philly all that long, but he has managed to demonstrate to a growing number of listeners that he is a unique songwriter that shouldn’t be ignored. With poetic diction, upbeat, brain-burrowing melodies, and a distinct vocal styling that bleeds earnestness, I continue to listen in awe as he churns out release after release of songs that simply touch the heart and charm the senses. And the fact that all this is done holding true to his unpretentious DIY/punk ethos, it’s no wonder why we love him so much here at The Deli. Sam recently booked his bus tickets to head out on tour throughout most of next month before making a stop home for a rad show on Sunday, January 26 at the First Unitarian Church with Waxahatchee, All Dogs, Cayetana and Heavy Bangs. So if you really don’t want to wait until next year to see him perform live, then screw the rest of your workweek and make a trip out to the Golden Tea House tonight. It’ll totally be worth it. Golden Tea House, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $5, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

+HIRS+ Opening for F.O.D. at Golden Tea House Dec. 15

Posted on:
It just makes absolute sense that Philly area hardcore legends F.O.D. (a.k.a. Flag of Democracy) are headlining Golden Tea House tonight. It’s also pretty damn amazing to have these local underground warhorses of thirty-plus years anoint the beloved West Philly DIY space. And you’ll find them in good company alongside a fine representation of the city’s next generation of basement destroyers. Philly queer thrashers +HIRS+ will be releasing rapid-fire drumbeats, slash-n-burn guitar riffs, and war-cry wails that could inspire revolution. “NO GODS // NO COPS // NO BROS” – sounds like utopia to me! Golden Tea House, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7:30pm, All Ages – Alexis V.

Update: +HIRS+ dropped off the bill, and has been replaced by Ex Friends.
