Faux Slang Finding Equilibrium at The Boot & Saddle Dec. 21

Posted on:
Faux Slang serves as this evening’s opener at The Boot & Saddle. The group doesn’t confine itself to a singular genre. Rather, they find equilibrium amid a blending of styles and in many ways that blending creates a hybrid that one might not expect, capturing a well-rounded sound. There’s a raw “take it as it is” garage grit guitar and bass that’s balanced by clean snap and pop percussion and vocals with layered pop sensibilities. Throw in their fully capable tendency to drift toward elongated heady territory, and you’ll find a band that can cover a lot of ground from heavy and distant to clear and catchy or somewhere in between. Faux Slang will be followed by another group that truly falls under the definition of “eclectic” in Weird Hot, with their scattered art-pop sound that leaves no musical influence/possibility unturned. Reinvigorated local math-rock quartet Lefty’s Deceiver will headline the bill. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 9pm $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, December 20 – 22

Posted on:
Locals Restorations open for one of the aughts’ most popular emo groups The Early November at Union Transfer this Saturday night. Their record simply titled LP2 released last April delivers spirited anthems saddled by shining guitars and a sense of urgency conveyed through Jon Loudon’s guttural voice, giving their songs an epic feel. With a pop-punk foundation, their sound builds complexity with elements of shoegaze, post-punk, psych-rock and noise. Weaving urban existentialist lyrical narratives, themes emerge like the superficiality of competition and the struggle against complacency – but despite these frustrations, there is an underlying hopefulness. They’ll be joined by Little Big League, who will be laying down acute, well-crafted, indie guitar rock. Their record These Are Good People, which came out this past August, is a perfect winter album brimming with nostalgia and brooding. Michelle Zauner’s voice is both familiar and unique, inviting the listener into a deeply personal world of driving along the highways of New England and getting entangled in messy relationships, with an edge toward the stark and sensual. Union Transfer, 1024 Spring Garden St., 8pm, Sold Out, 21+ – Ali Carter

Feel the Warmth of Maitland at the TLA Dec. 20

Posted on:
Listen to any of Maitland’s tracks; you suddenly feel transported back to the days of summer camp. You can almost smell the smoldering wood as the last flicker of light dims. They create introspective folk over a simplistic, acoustic-styled, instrumental background that can often get expansive blanketing its surroundings and evoking emotional sincerity that connects with its audience. Singer-songwriter Josh Hines will be backed by a full band for the first time tonight as they find themselves on a much larger stage than they are particularly used to at the TLA. Come join in their adventure! They’ll be supported by rifftastic alt rockers Dear Althea, country-pop solo artist Angela Everwood, and jam-band outfit Sauce. Theater of The Living Arts, 334 South St., 8pm, $8, All Ages – Shaylin O’Connell

Thee, Idea Men Opening for John The Conqueror at The Boot & Saddle Dec. 20

Posted on:
It’s blues night at The Boot & Saddle! Old souls Thee, Idea Men’s self-told story of their origins as a band is so wrought with sarcasm and ridiculousness that I can’t decide which of it to take seriously (probably none of it), yet this sassy self-deprecation sets the tone for their fun, old-school blues rock jams. The recent Drexel University alums released a new single this past September called “Help Me, Mama,” mixing a Foo Fighters-esque edge with a hint of rockabilly, giving us a taste of their forthcoming second album. They’ll be opening for John The Conqueror, who is gearing up for a jaunt through Europe to kickoff 2014. Rounding out the bill are Fishtown friends Stef Emery and Ryan Gaughan (of Among Criminals) together as La Capitaña. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Maggie Grabmeier

New Track: “Go Home” – Olive Drab

Posted on:

Brooklyn/Philly indie label Birdtapes recently shared a new track, "Go Home," from another local area find, Olive Drab, featuring members of Pirouette, Stable Boys, and Hightide Hotel. Blending blown-out guitars and confessional emo laments to bring us what they self-describe as "Philadelphia loser rock," it’s the lead single off their upcoming record entitled The Big Sleep, due out in early 2014. The album is the follow-up to the band’s 2012 EP Girl, which was released via Ranch Records.

In the Indiestry: The Guild’s Nick Fanelli

Posted on:
DIY concert promoting collective The Guild has been working hard this past year bringing homegrown and out-of-town emerging acts together, while helping to foster the Philly music community. And as you’ll learn from our interview with Guild co-founder Nick Fanelli, there has been rarely any time for the group to let loose during the 100+ shows that they’ve put on this year. Well, with tonight’s Misfits Under Mistletoe: The Guild’s 2013 Holiday Party at The Fire, the guys will finally get a chance to relax and get “dumber” with the rest of their friends and family. The special event will feature Band From The Back Porch, who is made up of members from The Menzingers, Luther and Timeshares covering Saves the Day’s Stay What You Are in its entirety, Too Hectic: A Tribute To Operation Ivy, with members of Paint It Black, Armalite, Yo Man, Go! and NONA, and The Guild Family Goddamn Cover Band, who will be laying down the instrumentals for some serious karaoke. Yeah, you can bet that there will be a lot of like-minded, drunken folks in a big group sing-along, but before you go hoarse from this free evening of fun, please check out our interview with Fanelli and learn more about him and The Guild HERE.

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Mo Lowda & the Humble

Posted on:
High school pals Jordan Caiola, Shane Woods and Nate Matulis played their first show together after just a thirty-minute practice, and when they had some miscommunication during a phone call, they came up with a band name that stuck – Mo Lowda & the Humble. The guys started taking things more seriously when they found themselves in Philly attending the same college – Temple University, which is apparent with their recent victory in our Featured Artist(s) Poll. You can learn more about Mo Lowda & the Humble from our interview with the group HERE.
