Free Download: “Queen Flea” – Illinois

It’s starting to feel like a week of comebacks. Here’s a new track called "Queen Flea," which you can stream and download for free below, from Bucks County’s Illinois ( who are probably best known for providing the soundtrack to Weeds‘ infamous "Brick Dance" with their fan favorite "Nosebleed"). The single will appear on their upcoming album that has yet to receive a title or release date.

Siltbreeze Showcase w/Far-Out Fangtooth & Watery Love at ICA May 14

Posted on:
“Scavenged from the wreckage of distortion, this celebration allows Siltbreeze‘s records to be understood in the best way imaginable – through sounds. Lots of them.” The beloved local boundary-pushing record label has invited the mesmerizing psych-goth of Far-Out Fangtooth and former Clockcleaner Richie Charles’ garage-punk outfit Watery Love to display some contemporary art of their own at the ICA this evening. Inspired by the exhibitions “Image Scavengers” (1982) and “Investigations 28: Martin Kippenberger” (1989), the music showcase will coexist with “Conjuring Kippenberger,” a talk that “touches on Kippenberger’s flirtation with No Wave music and design” by designer Mark Owens. Come out, and discover where the lines of music and design are blurred! Institute of Contemporary Art, 118 S. 36th St., 6:30pm, Free, All Ages – Alexis V.

New Pill Friends EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Through all their past unpolished, lo-fi recordings, we always knew that Pill Friends were holding plenty of potent songs among their collection of downer-pop. On their latest EP fade into nothing, the group headed into the studio this past August with Kyle Pulley at Headroom, fleshing out older favorites like "klonopin" and "promethazine," giving them a sheen that had not been seen/heard in any of the band’s previous releases. Opener and new track "samael" seems to glow like a beacon of light guiding us towards Pill Friends’ future sound. Maybe now more folks may finally start to realize how rad this project really is. New Track: “Gully” – Spank Rock

Posted on:

It’s been almost three years since we’ve heard new material from Spank Rock. Well, the wait is finally over with his latest track "Gully" that premiered earlier today over at Stereogum. It was produced by Boys Noize and Kid Kamillion, proving that the foul-mouthed Baltimore transplant can still get the party started with a club banger. The single officially comes out May 20 via his own label Bad Blood Records.

No Longer a Solo World for Heat Thunder at WCL May 13

Posted on:

We were first introduced to Joe Montone, a.k.a. Heat Thunder, through his debut EP Melody, Love & Soul, a medley of tracks that eventually inspired a collaboration with New York-based filmmaker Evan Cohen. The short film captures the spacious sounds of the record, which was heavily-influenced by the wooded landscapes of Montone’s hometown, Doylestown, a place that The Deli is quite familiar with, having birthed favorites like Aderbat, Night Panther and many others. Since then, the project has grown into a full band that consists of William Chamuris (Commonwealth Choir) on drums, Luming Hao (Our Griffins) on guitar and vocals, and bassist Matthew Philips, who also produced Heat Thunder’s single, "Solo World" (below), their first recording effort as a group. They’ll be headlining the upstairs room at World Cafe Live this evening supported by pals Delco Pacers and The Naked Sun. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St., 9pm, $8, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Congenital Death Opening for Jarhead Fertilizer at Duff Gardens May 12

Posted on:
Congenital Death went to Massachusetts last month to record a new album with lovechild’s Zach Weeks. So the pulverizing hardcore four-piece should provide a tight performance of new material when opening for the death cries of Ocean City, MD’s Jarhead Fertilizer tonight at West Philly’s Duff Gardens along with Skin Graft and Past Tense. (Note: There was a last minute venue change from South Philly’s Titan House.) Congenital Death also recently released an explosive new single, “Ground Flesh,” for Raleigh, NC’s To Live A Lie Records’ latest compilation LP, which you can thrash violently to below. New Track: “Make Out San Francisco” – Gorgeous Porch

Posted on:

Orbit to Leslie‘s frontman Chris Wood began playing around with doo-wop in lo-fi on the band’s EP Preppy Spooky. With his latest project Gorgeous Porch, he continues to experiment with the genre intermingling Casio beats and dreamy melodies to create an eerily beautiful groove. Check out "Make Out San Fransisco" (below), which opens his EP Moomania that was recorded with the collaborative help of Pat Bradley. Enjoy! (Photo by Amy Mulligan)

The 11th Annual Art Star Craft Bazaar at The Great Plaza May 10 & 11

Just in time to complete your last minute Mother’s Day shopping, the Art Star Craft Bazaar returns for its 11th year running to The Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing. The popular riverside park will be filled to the brim with 100+ craft vendors selling their goods, and there will also be arts & craft demos, a cut & paste photobooth, and plenty of food trucks to enjoy. And in the center of it all will be a live music stage that will feature some interesting local musicians on both days. On Saturday, afternoon Oldermost should impress when they perform songs from their latest album I Live Here Now. And on Sunday, Kwesi K will showcase why his latest EP Lovely has been garnering him a lot of praise. Saturday will also see Levee Drivers deliver their dynamic blues-tinged rockabilly, meanwhile Sunday will feature the first of many free outdoor shows that Johnny Showcase will be performing in the month of May. Weekend Warrior, May 9 – 11

Posted on:
When Marcus Denke and Kevin Keenan combine forces forming The Joint Chiefs of Math, the results are truly dynamic. To be more specific, The Joint Chiefs of Math seem to lock-in and sync up, communicating complex musical ideas which are played at a frenetic yet calculated pace. The pairing weaves through a labyrinth of sonic styles, taking unexpected turns and steering clear of convention – in essence, purposely driving off the grid to find their own warp-speed way. The emotionally volatile, noisy alt-rockers Mumblr occupy the other opening position this evening at Johnny Brenda’s, gearing up for the fret-shredding work of Marnie Stern.
