The second annual 8static Festival, which champions lo-fi electronic music and the creation of art and music using what has been considered old video game technology and computers, begins its 3-night run this evening at First Unitarian Church. The event coincides with the 6th anniversary of 8Static, the premier Philly monthly chip music event, and features 32 artists from around the world. This innovative and imaginative genre/scene ushers in an air of fun and includes some local artists in Cheap Dinosaurs, Void Vision, Animal Style, defiantsystems and Dain Saint, generating a thriving dance-oriented community for the next three nights with daily tickets running you $20 and 3-day passes going for $50. Tonight, Cherokee Red kicks off their fall East Coast tour this evening, alongside a triad of local acts, at Kung Fu Necktie, armed with a fresh set of tapes via Magic Death Sounds for their new single “The World is My Oyster, You’re the Pearl” released today. The song captures a tight folk-pop unit and slips naturally on a fall-oriented rotation with its warm electric guitar leads, the natural ease and delivery of its yearning vocals, and the balancing, drafty percussion. It’s a song that, much like the band, subtlety builds layers of sound. The now seven-piece Circadian Rhythms, whose “In The Flowers,” has teased that the group’s A Passing Thought EP should be excellent with its bright folk/R&B blend. With blends on the mind, Boarding School does just that incorporating male and female vocal harmonies with a minimalist sound that somehow injects drum machine. We’ve certainly used the term "Pennsyltucky" numerous times in our lives. Besides the fact that we love using hybrid and made-up words  as discriptors, it simply captures our feelings about certain regions of our beloved state. Here’s a new music video for the title track from their latest EP O, Pennsyltucky from Erik Peterson-led, veteran folk-punk crew Mischief Brew that we totally get and enjoy. Youth Crush‘s debut single, "Thick As Thieves," which you can download for free HERE, brings us back to the 80s. We envision it playing in the background of a John Hughes movie while its main character laments about a lost relationship or actually finally winning over his or her true love, overcoming the barriers of society or teenage social hierarchies. For Youth Crush, judging by the quote below that came with its music video, the inspiration might have come from something out of the Twilight series, but we’ve never seen any of those movies.

"We are all alone and pizza is as close as you are ever going to get to companionship, even if you are some undead teenage lord of the dark arts."

Get a Life, the debut EP from garage punk quartet Littler is now available for streaming and download below. Recorded & mixed by the group’s own Dan Colanduno, Littler takes witty, attitude-laced personal narrative songs, and drives them home with a blend of musicianship that hovers between subdued and downhill speed. Tapes will be available via Number4Door, and the album artwork is courtesy of Perry Shall.

After such a dreary day yesterday, we think that you could use a little something to brighten your lazy Sunday. Below is the debut EP from from Bensalem, PA pop-tinged alt-rock outfit The Burgeoning entitled Love Alchemy, Love Algorithm. Led by the sibling combination of Logan and Alex Thierjung, who started the project after a late-night jam session in 2011, the quartet is rounded out by lead guitarist Mark Menkevich and Brandon Bradley.
