With his self-titled debut LP due out next Tuesday, January 27 via PaperCup Music, Virginia transplant Wesley Bunch, a.k.a. Suburban Living, is scheduled to perform at Bourbon & Branch tomorrow night. For those contemplating attending the event, check out this early preview of the new record, and you’re sure to be swayed. With its airy stripped-down unions of synth/guitar/percussion, it’s easy to picture this album getting heavy rotation.

Directed by Alex Girav, here’s a video for “Too Long Here” a collaborative effort between Alex G and Ryan Hemsworh found on Hemsworth’s Alone For The First Time. Despite its casual strolling production, the video has a creepy edge as selfies take on a personality of their own. Shot by Caitlin McCann and featuring Dom Billett on drums, Ron Gallo’s entry for NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest “Kill the Medicine Man” quickly grabs your attention. Gallo’s vocals encapsulate a yearning agitated power. Even though his words express a lingering pain, he rises above it bellowing at his demons.

Pensive wave with an undercutting yet vigilant groove pieced together with percussion, bass and those futuristically bright synth tones. The duo of Andrew Butler and Carolyn Wayne form Proexhibitors dish out damp, dreary yet danceable songs. With lyrics that are often directed at the listeners, the vocals can be heard as a call to action. Thus, while the groove simmers and stirs in that place just beyond the dimly lit threshold, you’ll find yourself taking a few steps closer to catch a better look. The crisp percussion and short precise guitar licks of The Guests serve as the openers. A pair of Ohio–based bands are sandwiched in between with Cosmic Moon crafting a dark ambiance, while The American Jobs toy with sonic textures in a shady yet intoxicating fashion. Lame-O Records‘ six-song compilation to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy foundation, Strength In Weakness, is due out on February 3. The local label has already shared tracks from Modern Baseball ("Alpha Kappa fall Of Troy The Movie Part Deaux") and Spraynard ("Haulin’ Oats"). Its latest offering is another catchy power-pop ditty from Philly trio Hurry called "Shake It Off," which is definitely not a Taylor Swift cover and is available for streaming below. Bringing the 80’s coming-of-age-teenage-movie vibes, Resistor finds a sweet spot with "Cordless Phone." With guy-gal vocals, they weave their laments amidst bouncing synth lines. And the retro found footage in the music video below completes their aesthetic with tongue-in-cheek.

Free Cake For Every Creature, the solo venture which evolved into the band of upstate New York transplant Katie Bennett, performs tonight at Great Indoors. Bennett’s songwriting style offers a glimpse into her inner workings. These episodic insights expose a vulnerability, which can be appreciated for its sincere/honest qualities; after all opening up to the outside world can be a frightening proposition. These songs also inhabit a natural sweetness as Bennett’s soft vocals correspond to an air of innocence juxtaposed to intimate lyrics, which spread out over the emotional spectrum. They will be joined by the witty, garage-punk quartet Littler. The trio of Trace Mountains, featuring David Benton (LVL UP), Jim Hill and Liz Pelly, has an easy-going singer/songwriter-punk hybrid as the lyrics offer a glimpse into the darkness. Young Statues frontman Carmen Cirignana rediscovers the fun of playing guitar. Check out his Zero Platoon Take Cover session where he shares his rendition of Sharon Van Etten’s "Every Time the Sun Comes Up." The song is off her latest release Are We There, which is Cirignana’s favorite album from 2014.

Roll or should we say cruise along to the new Ground Up single “Tijuana.” The breezy, windows-down track has a sensual side, exemplified by AJ Hernz’s ever-suggestive hook. You can stream and download it for free below. It’s a momentary get away from the daily grind. Let the daydream commence.

When a group of highly skilled, slick-tongued emcees co-mingle bringing out the best in each other, a natural collective is born. Such is the case of the Wrecking Crew (Curly Castro, Has-Lo, Small Professor, Zilla Rocca, PremRock), who collaborate and up the ante with each verse. This formula functions like a staircase, as the music builds one step only made possible by its predecessor and vice versa, using beats as a sound foundation. These fellas hit hard, forcing the issue in a distant shortening rush, yet they always breathe easy. Speaking of sweat-inducing intensity Carl Kavorkian (Jam Faction) delivers weighted blows in his spellbinding series of rhymes. This spectacle at The Sound Hole also features a pair of out-of-towners, the Queens’ collective Karma Kids and the “witch hunt disco” stylings of Chicago’s Tomorrow Kings.
