Sometimes, the best option is to fall into a deep, funky, psych groove, and see where it leads you. With that approach, Union Transfer could be the destination this evening as Grimace Federation provide streamlined, spatial, scanning sonics that extend in a whimsical fashion, lifting the standard stressors, while dropping you in the trenches of those dance-inducing patterns. Tonight, the ever-evolving post-rock outfit will be armed with dual drummers, once again, and they’ll be helping to set the table for Aesop Rock, who has collaborated with the gang in the past, like remixing “Strange Hours” and “Steamboat” for the band’s latest release, The Measure in the Mix (Rhymesayers). Collaboration is the link that binds the artists this evening, which also features Brooklyn-based emcee Homeboy Sandman, whose eclectic jazz/soul-inflected new album, Kindness for Weakness, was released last month. And with Rob Sonic and DJ Zone in the fold, an old-school, Hail Mary Mallon sound may slip into action. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8:30 pm, All Ages – Michael Colavita
Weekend Warrior, June 10 – 12
Since coming onto the Philly music scene, Mumblr is a band that has been consistently churning out some seriously interesting material. Led by the versatility of frontman Nick Morrison’s vocals, the quartet continues to refine its sound on its newest LP The Never Ending Get Down, which is out today via Austin-based label Fleeting Youth Records. I’m totally rooting for these guys to get more national attention and tours in the near future, and their latest album is sounding like another big step in the right direction. Tomorrow night, you can catch Mumblr tearing through songs from their new record as well as some of their older favorites at PhilaMOCA. It’s a rad lineup in which you also find the blistering “shitpunk” of Mannequin Pussy and the post-something power-gaze of Amanda X. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Alexis V.
Clique Record Release Show at Everybody Hits June 10
On their sophomore album Burden Piece, recently released via Topshelf Records, Clique continues to leave their vulnerability unsheltered. The resulting accessibility resonates as the band expresses daily contemplations of emotions in quick flashes of melodic rock, spilling out doubts, fears, and frustrations of the daily routine in a downhill thrust. Tonight, at Everybody Hits, a celebration of the record will occur, where they’ll be joined by grungy tourmates Stove, while the speed-up-and-cruise pop-punk of locals Loose Tooth and the relaxed, incisive, open, bedroom-rock tones of Self Help complete this slate. New Music Video: “Maybe” – Ceramic Animal
As a show with The Binary Sea and Lou looms this Saturday at Underground Arts, Ceramic Animal has released a new music video for the track “Maybe”. Directed by Oliver Samuels, the band embraces nature, emerging from a hole and casually performing amongst a picnic, while suited up along the water. The tone is loose and playful, especially when nature calls.
New Music Video: “The Tree” – Sean Caruthers
Sean Caruthers, formerly of Cousin Brian, has issued a new track. Accompanied by some strange imagery and a downright creepy masked individual, “The Tree” jangles in a haunting, ethereal manner, as though the vocals are emitted from a mysterious, secret place. Hopefully this is an indication that more new material in some configuration is in the future. (Photo by Abi Reimold)
New Video: “A Bitter Divorce” (Captain We’re Sinking Cover) – Petal
Petal is on the road for an extensive tour with PWR BTTM and Pity Sex. Before heading out, frontwoman Kiley Lotz sat down and filmed a stripped-down, heart-wrenching cover of "A Bitter Divorce," which was originally written and recorded by Scranton pals and Run For Cover labelmates Captain, We’re Sinking. The tour will be stopping in Philly this Sunday, June 12 at Union Transfer.
New Track: “Humble” – Broken Beak
Broken Beak recently shared a brief but exciting new single, called "Humble," at The A.V. Club. The band is led by Beau Brynes, and features guitarwork from Brendan Lukens of Modern Baseball. Lukens’s MoBo bandmate Jake Ewald is also producing the group’s forthcoming album, Some Nerve, which will be released on July 1 via Near Mint Records. Broken Beak is heading out on tour in August with Chris Farren in support of their new record. (Photo by Emily Dubin)
New Mumblr Album Available for Streaming
A fragile, on-the-edge, emotive exposure develops as the easily combustible, inwardly-isolated yet outwardly-rushing sound is created by Mumblr on their new record The Never Ending Get Down. While it won’t officially be released via Fleeting Youth Records until June 10, the quartet has revealed it over at Stereogum. Catch their record release show this Saturday, June 11 at PhilaMOCA with Amanda X and Mannequin Pussy!
New Music Video: “War” – Tunji Ige
Tunji Ige premiered a new music video over at NPR’s First Watch for the seductive, pulsating single "War," found on his latest EP Mission Calls. Directed by longtime collaborator and visual artist Glass Face, a.k.a. Josh Goldenberg, the video becomes an extension of the album’s cover art, which "was inspired by Magritte & other surrealist artists." It’s easy to get lost in the dreamy landscapes that were shot in Los Angeles.
New Birdie Busch LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from singer-songwriter Birdie Busch. Yesterday, she released her fifth full-length album, Thunder Bridge. The title comes from one of her favorite poems by Sun Ra, “We Must Not Say No to Ourselves”. On the eight-song LP, she is once again backed by the Greatest Night, who were featured on her last album, and Jaron Olevsky (Amos Lee) also lent his musical talents and production skills. You can hear the new tunes performed live at her record release show on Saturday, June 18 at Boot & Saddle.
New Video: Audiotree Live Session – Palm
NYC transplants, Palm’s Audiotree Live session, from May 6, 2016, is now available for streaming and/or purchase HERE. The quartet’s soothing vocal/instrumental integrations are meshed with unexpected twists and turns. The band’s performance is polished; however, those shifts reveal an array of intriguing possibilities.
Spacin’ Deliver the Goods at KFN June 7
Sticky guitar licks that ramp up crisscrossing into long distance jams. With spider-like dexterity, sonic limbs extend outward, reaching for a higher level. Spacin’ exhibits a simplistic knack to sit back and deliver the goods in a pure raw state. The group spins out in multiple directions – whether the destination is within eyes view, requiring a direct route, or one whose path will be determined by the musical monuments along the way. Either way, those in need of a psych-rock adventure should head to Kung Fu Necktie this evening. Tonight’s lineup is reinforced by State Champion, whose accessible yet precise lyrical narratives plug you into the middle of the action – a granular, country-injected, rockin’ sound that sticks. The multifaceted psych-shoegazing textures of Elliott Malvas-led, Virginia Beach-based, You’re Jovian, complete this billing. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $7, 21+ – Michael Colavita
