Weekend Warrior, October 28 – 30

Technically, Halloween falls on Monday. However, the autumnal celebration of dastardly deeds and debauchery will be in full flux this Saturday as Underground Arts opens its doors for the 7th Annual TJ Kong Halloween Costume Ball Rock N Roll Murdershow. Along with a haunting stir of booze-saturated country blues perpetuated by Kong & The Atomic Bomb, the candy-coated, Andy Moholt-led daydream down the rabbit-hole, better known as Laser Background, will provide their twist on The Zombies’ catalogue. The attitude-infused rumbling reverberation of Straw Hats and the serenading psych-pop grip of Grubby Little Hands will be joined by the slinky, streamlined, funk-fueled fire of MINKA and the rippling surf-psych wave of Ceramic Animal to seal this evening. Hurry’s Halloween Spectacular at PhilaMOCA Oct. 28

Power-popsters Hurry recently shared their new EP, Casual Feelings, which is now available via Lame-O Records. And this evening, they’ll be celebrating its arrival by kicking off this festive weekend with their Halloween Spectacular at PhilaMOCA. It’s a stacked bill of local music pals who are all set to let loose! Cave People just dropped their new full-length album, Sinning Tree, earlier today via Stereophonodon Records so make sure to give it a spin before heading out tonight. Eric Slick will hopefully be previewing more tunes from his highly-anticipated upcoming solo effort, Palisades. Russell Edling (ex-Kite Party) has joined Cave People, and will be pulling double duty with his band Cherry. Of course, costumes are requested so get creative! Mercury Radio Theater Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle Oct. 28

Tonight might just be the only album release party where you could possibly walk away winning two sweet-ass guitars as part of Gretsch’s Twang-O-Rama! Buddy Mercury and his multi-faceted musical cavalcade, Mercury Radio Theater, have been adding to the weirdness in Philly with a cacophony of rockabilly sounds, old-world gypsy melodies, tumultuous guitar riffs, saxophone blasts, dancehall punk, gang vocals, and more for the past 15 years. And the band’s latest release, Fabulous Red Menace, is a bold culmination of all of the above, while being themed around Eastern European propaganda in an American context. Debut Daisy Glaze EP Available for Streaming & Download

The new quintet of Daisy Glaze has released an EP, entitled Heavenly Bodies. The assemblage features Adrianne Gold (ex-Catnaps), Scott Churchman, Lynna Stancato (Bondage & Discipline), Buddy Mazzenga (Bondage & Discipline), and Sean Rosner. The trio of songs envelops the listener in a smooth, spiraling, space-age haze, as an effortless absorption into a warping, emotional connection. Tutlie Opening for Trails and Ways at KFN Oct. 27

Particularly on a day when the sun takes refuge behind the celestial bodies, one could use a shimmer of solace. Tutlie emerges as a break in the clouds this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. Fusing elegantly ascending vocal harmony with the strong, revitalizing wonderland of instrumentation, hovering in a substantial yet feathery floatation, Tutlie is a refreshingly crisp musical breath, especially when they’ll be playing a set of material from their new record. Tonight, they’re paired with the unfiltered emotive pensions of Clique, whose melodic ebb and flow simmers and swells with a tranquil but unsettled energy. Hound’s Perry Shall shows us how to rock and survive in the woods of Pennsylvania in the band’s new video for “Walkin’ The Fine Line”. Co-directed by Shall and BJ Howze, the track can be found on 2015’s Out Of Space (SRA Records). Hound will be performing a cover set of the Damned this Saturday, October 29 at Boot & Saddle, and you can hear their originals live next in Philly on Friday, November 11 at Ortlieb’s.

Mike Polizze of Purling Hiss takes a trek around the city, using the El as his main mode of transportation between Fishtown and West Philly in the band’s latest video for the single, "Follow You Around," off the group’s new album High Bias (Drag City). He also provides more hometown love, sporting a Dead Milkmen‘s t-shirt in Laurel Hill Cemetery, where the beloved punks recently did a special performance last month. It’s a lighthearted look and sound for the normally heavy-rockin’ power trio, who will have a chance to show off the nastier side of their instrumental skills that we have come to know and love this Sunday, October 30 at Johnny Brenda’s, alongside Honey Radar and Hothead.
