New Video: “I’m Not Falling Asleep” (Andy Shauf Cover) – Abi Reimold

Posted on:

Abi Reimold recently revisited the good folks at Swell Tone for another live performance session. This time around, Reimold chose to cover Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Shauf’s drowsy single, "I’m Not Falling Asleep," off 2012’s The Bearer of Bad News. The takes were captured during the hours of sunrise and sunset on the longest day of the year by videographer Bob Sweeney and audio technician Jake Detwiler at The Nativist, a beautifully decorated bed & breakfast here in Philly. Abi Reimold will be opening The Districts‘s record release show on Friday, August 11 at Union Transfer, where they will also be joined by another great Philly act The Spirit and the Beehive. New God Root EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

The quintet of God Root released its second EP Salt And Rot, which is available via local imprint Horror Pain Gore Death. Shrouded in the shadows of sludge, a steady quaking heaviness permeates. Those dire sonic consequences are pushed to the brink, building towards a doom-driven conclusion. The band is slated to appear at The Irish Pol on Saturday, August 19 with Mob Terror. New Track: “All Or Nothing” – The Dull Blue Lights

Posted on:

The basement soul brigade, formerly known as The Snails and now known as The Dull Blue Lights, is scheduled to release on July 13 its self-titled debut LP. The album was produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Benjamin Booker, Clear Plastic Masks), and its latest single, “All Or Nothing”, is steeped in a slow-cooking, soulful, reggae groove. The post breakup narrative is aided by the laid-back, instrumental stroll, as the comfort is afforded by reassuring backing harmony, reinforced by the warmth of keys and tempered by the lead vocal’s heartache. You can catch The Dull Blue Lights at their record release show this Thursday at The Barbary. (Photo by Caity MacLeod)

New Track: “Houses Into Homes” – Katie Ellen

Posted on:

After the breakup of rising band Chumped and a deeply involved romantic relationship, frontwoman Anika Pyle found herself in Philly, taking collage classes, writing new music, and starting a new recording project with former Chumped bandmate/drummer Dan Frelly that they eventually named Katie Ellen. The duo began working with Kyle Pulley at The Headroom Philadelphia, laying down the foundation for what would be the band’s forthcoming debut full-length album Cowgirl Blues. The LP is due out this Friday, July 14 via Lauren Records, and you can join Katie Ellen that very same evening to welcome its arrival at PhilaMOCA with Field Mouse and Roger Harvey. You can also now check out the LP’s latest single, "Houses Into Homes," and a Q&A with Pyle and Frelly at Stereogum.

New Waxahatchee LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

Waxahatchee, a.k.a. Katie Crutchfield, comes "out in the storm," and manages to find clarity and herself with her new album, which officially drops July 14 via Merge Records. The LP was a vehicle that helped Crutchfield work through a tumultuous breakup, leaving it behind for clearer skies. The record often feels bittersweet but necessary for the growth of the 29-year-old artist. You can now stream Out In The Storm in its entirety over at NPR’s First Listen, and make sure to grab your very own copy this Friday at Union Transfer, where Waxahatchee will also be supported by tourmates Cayetana and Baltimore’s Snail Mail.

Ticket Giveaway: Woods at Underground Arts This Friday

Posted on:

Woods wrote and recorded its latest album two months after the devastatingly shocking outcome of the last U.S. presidential election. The group worked through the trying times to produce Love Is Love (Woodsist), which may feel rather dark at times but actually manages to provide a glimmer of hope that is so desperately needed right now. They’ll be bringing Love this Friday, July 14 to Underground Arts, where the Brooklyn indie-folk outfit will be joined by labelmates John Andrew & The Yawns and Cut Worms. To enter for a chance to win a pair of tix, just send an email to thedelimagazinephiladelphia@gmail.com with the subject line "Love Trumps Hate". Please also include your cell number in the body of the message (in case of an emergency). Good luck!

Weekend Warrior, July 7 – 9

Posted on:

This Saturday, Union Transfer hosts a billing that generates power via proximity. (Sandy) Alex G floats feathered layers of intersecting instrumentation, establishing a complex reassuring sense of melody. Placing pensively introspective narratives on top of delicately detailed compositions, his tunes are capable of swaying you into submission and/or abruptly shifting sonic gears and ripping it up. And as we await the official release of her new album Soft Sounds From Another Planet (due out July 14 via Dead Oceans), Japanese Breakfast captivates with cosmos-venturing, silky serenades and dramatically danceable tracks that waft into the ether, while sinking in deep. In support of their recent full-length debut #1 Hit Single, available via Double Double Whammy, Brooklyn quartet Cende cracks the doors open with a jangly, jarring brand of power pop. – Michael Colavita

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Blushed

Posted on:

Philly’s Blushed seems to have come together the way many bands do in burgeoning DIY music communities. Fledgling artist (Missy Pidgeon) moves to the city, and meets like-minded musician (Matty Klauser) at a local show, who eventually introduces her to another classically-trained music friend (Alyssa Milman). They “gel nicely,” and start a band. With merely two released demos under their belt, we look forward to hearing what they’ll do with their free mastering and recording studio time prizes from our generous and supportive sponsors APS Mastering and Sleepless Sound. However, before that happens, feel free to learn more about our recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner HERE.

New Track: “Cool” (Gwen Stefani Cover) – Queen of Jeans

Posted on:

In tribute to Sofia Coppola, Super Fan 99 is releasing a compilation covering songs featured in her films. Queen of Jeans contributed their take on Gwen Stefani’s “Cool,” which can be found in the movie, Somewhere. The song retains its fresh-air, synth-pop calm, with a slight mellowed tone. The ladies and gent are also scheduled to perform at this year’s Made In America Festival in September. (Photo by Bob Sweeney)

New Sheer Mag LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

The official release date for Sheer Mag’s full-length debut via Wilsun RC is July 14. However, the wait is over; Need to Feel Your Love is here courtesy of NPR’s First Listen. The album immediately adheres as juxtaposing, ready-to-rumble grit is countered by sweetened, soulful vocals. Meshing that tough vulnerability with short-fused guitar licks and grimy infectious grooves, Sheer Mag unleashes a polished, pugilistic power, while demonstrating an ability to adjust and adapt over a course of sonic settings.

New Track: “Missing Parts” (Jeff Pianki Cover) – Seagulls

Posted on:

Seagulls recently issued a compilation of acoustic cuts and covers, Answering Machine: Acoustic and Undercover. You’ll find a cover of Jeff Pianki’s “Missing Parts” kicking off the collection. The warmth of vocal harmony slices through the reflective heartache/loneliness in the residual evening illumination.
