The quartet of Callowhill will be celebrating the release of its debut LP The Way Out (Exotic Fever), which officially drops tomorrow, with a show this evening at Boot & Saddle, supported by Rogue Conjurer and Great Weights. The album intersects a plethora of styles/genres. Calm, ruminative emotives conjure a mystic quality; however, that serenely somber setting serves as a precursor to impending heaviness. It can systematically encircle, exploring a depth or washing over in loose, melodic precision.
New Track: “Tired of Everything” – Bardus
Doom metal outfit Bardus have released a new single, “Tired of Everything,” which represents their half of a soon to be available split with Baltimore’s Multicult, courtesy of Corpse Flower Records. The band shears guitar threads through the ominous backend underbelly in its latest offering, as the fading but fervent vocals roar. Those dire swells of sound shake with a primal power. Bardus will be kicking off a late summer run this evening with Connecticut noise-rock power trio Grizzlor.
New Doggo Album Available for Streaming & Purchase
Hotel Carlyle, the new album from the trio of Doggo, charges at you with an emotive punk energy. Utilizing instrumental exclamation points, the band relates daily trials and tribulations in melodic aggressive shots. Those quick hitting songs with universal refrains, naturally stick in your head. Grab a cassette via Good Sadie, and catch the band on Wednesday, September 13 at Ortlieb’s, as part of a bill that also includes Larry Nodder and Tiger Castle.
New Track: “Thirst For Violence” – S-21
S-21 is one of the most exciting hardcore acts to emerge from the Philly DIY scene, as of late. That is why we are truly bummed to learn that the band’s show this Friday, September 1 at the First Unitarian Church, with Blazing Eye, Exit Order, and Macho Boys, will be the group’s last. However, before they burn it all down, you can stream and download the brutal lead single, off S-21’s forthcoming EP Operation Menu (World Gone Mad/Slugsalt), called "Thirst for Violence".

Weekend Warrior, August 25 – 27
This Saturday evening, R5 Productions, along with WPRB, will be presenting former Deli Philly Best Emerging Artist Sheer Mag’s record release show at Union Transfer. The band’s long-awaited full-length debut, Need to Feel Your Love, (Wilsuns Recording Company) doesn’t disappoint, meshing powerfully impassioned vocals, tight late night grooves and adrenalin-laced, white-hot, rifftastic invasions. Those assertive aggressions are craftily threaded, revealing tender, candle-lit flourishes. While exhibiting a take-it-as-it-is, raw and roaring exterior, a calculated precision lies within. They’ll be supported by the fuzz-forward, sticky psych rock of Purling Hiss, the heart-pounding, quick-bursting punk of Dark Thoughts, and the instantaneous hardcore of NYC’s Haram.
Meanwhile, Home Outgrown is presenting a weekend-long fest, dubbed A Fest We Didn’t Know What to Name, which will spread across three Philly DIY spaces. Three Man Cannon and Coping Skills are among those ushering tonight’s show at Broke Down Palace, while the bombarding, catchy Superweaks are lined up to headline Hole Foods this Saturday, and the diverse, personal narratives of Curtis Cooper will be setting up shop on Sunday at Little Italy. – Michael Colavita

New Maxwell Stern Single Available for Streaming & Download
Maxwell Stern (of Signals Midwest) recently shared a new single release. “Light Later Lately” serves as a sun-baked ode to summer, with a relaxed, folk sing-along feel and warm organ tones. And the B-side, a cover of Cayetana’s “Mountain Kids,” which originally appeared on 2014’s Nervous Like Me, takes a reserved, meditative approach, as the percussive nature/tempo languidly steps back. You can catch Stern on Saturday, September 2 at Broke Down Palace, as part of a lineup that also includes Mother Evergreen, Blue Ranger, and Alenni.
New Track: “Buy My Ashes” – Etheric Felines
Trip-hop triumvirate Etheric Felines’ latest single, “Buy My Ashes,” quickly establishes a bass-quaking beat. That foreboding sense of authority gives rise to Andrea Bullard’s relentless rhymes that slyly wax and wane between idealistic, personal goals and self-confidence. That desire to achieve, weighed against potential security of abandoning dreams, creates a crisis of conscience. This mindful tension is smoothed over by Katie Ross’ subconscious “You don’t know me” chorus, hovering overhead.
New Track: “Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas” (Quiet Slang) – Beach Slang
Beach Slang‘s James Alex began doing solo performances last year under the moniker Quiet Slang. Well, Alex just announced that he’ll be releasing a 7" EP of rearranged Beach Slang songs, entitled We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags, which is due out October 20 via Polyvinyl Records. Below is its first single, a beautiful, piano-cello-vocal rendition of "Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas," off 2015’s The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us.
New Mattress Food LP Available for Streaming & Download
Shrouded in warping echo and acoustic guitar strums, Vulture, the new release from Sami Rahman, a.k.a. Mattress Food, strolls up to you in a comfortably close but vulnerable manner. Luminescent, lo-fi folk trends toward frayed, psych edges, delivering stripped-down, bedroom proximity with pop sensibilities. The follow-up to Cryola! is his second album release this summer.
New The War On Drugs LP Available for Streaming
After some technical difficulty, you can now stream The War On Drugs‘ new full-length album A Deeper Understanding in its entirety for the next 24 hours HERE. The LP officially comes out this Friday, August 25 via Atlantic Records. You can also catch The War On Drugs live in Philly on Thursday, September 21 at the Dell Music Center for Connor Barwin’s Make The World Better Foundation benefit concert. Enjoy!
Track Premiere: “Effaced” – Callowhill
Four years after forming, the post-punk quartet of Callowhill will release their full-length debut The Way Out (Exotic Fever Records), which was recorded and engineered by Jeff Zeigler (Uniform Recording). Today, we are happy to share with you the band’s latest single “Effaced”. Soft-soothing vocals lift one into a steamy summer haze, countered by the purposeful, shock-wave jolt of guitar. Meshing a sense of calm, with cool calculated lyricism, the song’s protagonist eventually fades into the ether. Callowhill will be celebrating the record’s release next Wednesday, August 30 at Boot & Saddle, where they’ll be supported by Great Weights and Rogue Conjurer. (Photo by Maura Kirk)
