New Lonely Ghost & Soft Idiot Split EP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Lonely Ghost and Soft Idiot have paired up to released the aptly titled split EP Lonely/Idiot. “Sleep Well” by Lonely Ghost, a.k.a. Kenny Forrester, melodically rattles in a shoegazing absorption. Shifting into a more tranquil hypnotic atmosphere, “We Felt Safe” drifts in subtle emotives. “Eclipse Song” and “Walk,” the contributions from Justin Roth, a.k.a. Soft Idiot, swim in a jangly folk setting (with “Walk” venturing into a psych-rock/noise realm), allowing the lyrical proximity to remain in focus. Soft Idiot is slated to appear on a bill with Mavis The Dog and Cabbage at Ortleib’s on Wednesday, September 27.

Debut Mary Veils LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

As the summer fades into mere memory, The Mary Veils, the lo-fi, psych vehicle of Brian Von Uff, rears its gnarly head with Slacker Paint. Low-and-slow, smoke-saturated songs retain their flavor, accented by raw, surf tones. Through the haze of fuzz-laced guitar riffs, the vocals leak through, as a seemingly lackadaisical, calming presence. In the midst of those fire-under-ones-feet grooves and swells, a roaring, untamed blaze of instrumentation waits to engulf at any moment, which makes for a surprisingly most excellent debut.

New Track: “Socialize” – Family Volleyball

Posted on:

“Socialize,” the new single from Family Volleyball, floats in the lush daydream of an eternal summer. The drifting vocal/guitar action is countered by the grounded snapback of percussion. Then, roughly a third of the way through, a unified instrumental push emerges from the laidback tones, propelling the surf-jangle to its noise-ridden conclusion. (Photo by Ty Alana)

New Michael Poggioli LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

I’m Yeah, the new album from Philly singer-songwriter Michael Poggioli, captures a breezy exuberant sense of melody, while exploring present-tense, personal narratives. Filtered through an inherent instrumental brightness, the songs blossom in ear-opening fashion. Working through the issues that each day presents, while holding oneself together, even when times are tough, Poggioli finds a way to turn those stories into universal sing-alongs.

Weekend Warrior, September 8 – 10

Posted on:

Toward the tail end of last month, Oh Sees released their new album Orc (Castle Face Records). Stretching into a spacey psych-garage paradigm, the band shreds through the ether, while casting strange scenarios of odd artistic visions, projecting an idiosyncratic ideal. Tonight, they’ll be supported at The Troc by the down and dirty pairing of garage-rock locals The Whips and The Tough Shits. The Whips’ slithering, slack/surf-inflected songs instantly catch one on an enthusiastic hook-driven, groove-shaking journey. Add the instantly enthusiastic, get-down energy of The Whips, and let the weekend wind down commence. – Michael Colavita

New Lowercase Rose Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Lowercase Roses, a.k.a. Matt Scheuermann, has released a new album. Surgical Pop injects ferocity into the bedroom-folk, lamplit shadows. Juxtaposing an assertive gritty aggression against a serenading twinkle, the album ebbs and flows, catching one off guard in a surprisingly positive manner. From moments of pared-down beauty to jarring jangle, the record, whose proceeds go to the Attic Youth Center, operates with care.

New Small Circle LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Cyclical, the debut album from Small Circle, is officially out today via Flower Girl Records. Delicate but driven instrumentation rolls forward as the soft strength of intersplicing vocals serve as a fuse-sparking catalyst. Matching intimate, harmony-laced songwriting with compact coasting grooves, the songs wash over in bright emotive flourishes. Quick, concise, Polaroid-style songs leave an imprint that is hard to discard.

New Track: “Fish Fry” – Slaughter Beach, Dog

Posted on:

“Fish Fry” serves as the latest sampling from Slaughter Beach, Dog’s forthcoming album Birdie, which is set for release on October 27 via Lame-O Records/Big Scary Monsters. Wandering through the evening alone, while exploring the spectrum of one’s emotional depths, what begins at a steady walking pace, gradually gains backend tempo. Finding a melodic middle-ground between the frustration that drives you to pull your hair out and moving on, the song’s persistent pain remains. Slaughter Beach, Dog will be performing as part of the Philly Music & Arts Fest on Saturday, September 23 at World Café Live.
