Ritual Talk premiere video for new single, “Sense”

Posted on:

Among the many jaw-dropping moments from Ritual Talk‘s performance at Pianos a few weeks back, one that noticeably caught the eyes of the crowd was their artful 5-person vocal harmonization. With their newest single, "Sense" (brand new video below), they replicate that skill perfectly on record. The band’s second track from their upcoming debut EP, Rippled Glass, is soothing and ethereal as was their debut single, "Help I’ve Been Dreaming"; but the vocal performance here is sublime, floating over a more psych, alt-soul vibe. The track’s progression is reminiscent of Alabama Shakes’ soul rock "Sound and Color," mixed with Alexander DeSimine’s Dirty Projectors-esque vocals; the accompanying harmonies, and the final buildup, will send chills down your spine. And if the rest EP is anything as this single and their live performance, it will be one hell of a release. – Pearse Devlin

Freezing Cold unveils debut EP, plays Amityville Music Hall on 09.19

Posted on:

New York’s Freezing Cold is a brand new indie band with math leanings comprised of ex-members from Bridge & Tunnel, Weed Hounds, as well as Aye Nako. The power trio’s self-released three song EP entitled Demo 2017 will resonate with fans of Seahaven’s melancholic post-hardcore/indie sound. Whether for its earnest sounding vocals, partly reminiscent of Cold War Kids’ frontman Nathan Willett with a touch of emo, or for the band’s inventive guitar parts backed by complex drum beats, this is a new project that’s definitely worth checking out. Their next live show will be at the Amityville Music Hall on September 19. – Pearse Devlin

Elliot & The Ghost perform at Mercury Lounge 08.25

Posted on:

Brooklyn band, Elliot & The Ghost, will be performing at Mercury Lounge on August 25th alongside Best Behavior. Most recently, the band released the single “Turn Off Your Radar” (streaming below), a playful yet dark alt-rock track that draws from pop, punk, and rock-and-roll. The song kicks off with an indie pop sound, while low vocals lead into an alternative rock-driven chorus. These darker undertones are tethered by lead singer William Thompson’s unleashing of scratchier and more daring vocals in the second verse. Be sure to catch the them light up the stage in a few weeks, and check out the music video to their latest single below. –Pearse Devlin

On August 12th, the Hideout will be hosting two impressive hometown performances, one of them being Parent, a mellow bedroom pop project from Chicago. The band’s most recent work is the track “I Tried”, released on Bandcamp and Soundcloud last month. The song is their most melancholic work yet, with droopy guitars and electronic piano floating around over the depressing lyrics about a suicide attempt. Check out the track below, and catch the band’s performance with Kevin Krauter next weekend. – Pearse Devlin

The Roofer’s Union hit Pianos 08.10

Posted on:

Tomorrow (August 10th), Brooklyn band The Roofer’s Union will be hitting the stage at Pianos. The band’s most recent track came out this past April; “Closer” is a fun number blending many different genres over a consistent alt-rock vibe. The track begins with a busy, groovy drum pattern, reminiscent of Lewis Del Mar’s beginning beat on “Painting (Masterpiece)” and develops through an inventive arrangement that exploits the rapid dynamics of the musical style known as "Staccato." Unpredictability is given priority in pretty much every part, drums excluded (unpredictable drums seldom work, anyway) – and The Deli will always dig that. Come check out the band’s performance at 10 PM at Pianos. – Pearse Devlin

No Men bring noise punk to Hideout 08.11

Posted on:

Chicago’s noise punk band No Men will be bringing their ferocious sound to The Hideout on August 11th. The band’s badass name is reflective of their daring style, especially on their track “Hell Is Real” off of Dear God, Bring The Doom from 2016. The track’s threatening lyrics are delivered in rant style over a quick punkish intro. Spoken female vocals kick into a surprisingly catchy chorus, but that doesn’t last long; the noise rock side erupts, as the guitars and drums lose complete control, a really cool blend of going from catchy to ballistic; check out their rowdy single below, as well as their upcoming performance. – Pearse Devlin

Soccer Mommy release new video ahead of album release 08.04

Posted on:

Contrary to her bedroom pop musical style, Soccer Mommy’s new music video is all outdoors, featuring different shots of lead singer, Sophie Allison, strolling out near the water, woods, and her car over the delightful single, “Allison”. This is one of two songs released off their upcoming album, Collection, set to release on August 4th. “Allison” and “Out Worn” both share similar aspects, an introductory reverbed guitar riff, accompanied then by echo-y, dreamy layers, but the directions of both songs evolve differently, "Allison" bringing forth blissful yet melancholic aspects, and “Out Worn” sounding more upbeat, drum-driven. Soccer Mommy will be touring this summer, which will include a show at Terminal 5 with The Districts–the Philly quartet featured on the Cover of the Deli Magazine’s SXSW issue a few years back, who are also set to release their album, Popular Manipulations, the following week. Come celebrate with both bands at their show on August 16th in NYC. – Pearse Devlin

Mae Capozzi brings melancholic indie folk to Pianos 08.09

Posted on:

On August 9th, Mae Capozzi will bring her melancholic indie folk  to Pianos in NYC. On her new EP, “Waited For”, a four-song project released on July 7th, the Brooklyn artist shares a sound that’s candid, stripped down and somewhat desolate. Mae’s songwriting is well structured, and her lyrics touch upon the pains and complications of living in NYC, all over the patterned riffs of her electric guitar. “Waited for your sadness to swallow me up, Waited for my loneliness to wash it down, Waited for NYC to murder me, Took the next train that came around” she sings on “Waited For”, a vulnerable and perceptive track about getting sucked in and constrained by the Big Apple, without being able to break free from its unrelenting momentum. – Pearse Devlin

Uni delivers provocative music video for “What’s the Problem”, play at Baby’s All Right 08.07

Posted on:

New York City Uni‘s debut video, “What’s The Problem,” is a playful, provocative and extremely entertaining take on ’70s revival, but before you hit that play button you need to be aware that it’s NSFW! As the song kicks in, the shots get more outlandish, yet more absorbing, with the stylish photography and retro backdrop neutralizing – to a certain extent – the images’ sexual content. The new project, comprising Charlotte Kemp Muhl, David Strange, and Nico Fuzz, is truly as absurd as the band members’ own description of it (which you need to read), and takes in the theatrical inclinations of glam-rock while pushing it towards diverging pop and porn extremes – with some existentialism thrown in for good measure. “What’s the problem with the girls that come from good homes?” the vocals insist, catalyzing the visual absurdities, as drums get more aggressive, and the melody get stretched out towards triumphant “Ooos”. Strange’s guitar riffs are infectious, the hooks are catchy, and the drums drive the build up without overpowering those psych-pop undertones. Check out the video below, and be sure to catch the band’s performance at Baby’s All Right on August 7th. – Pearse Devlin

Psych rockers Blac Rabbit play Union Pool on 07.30

This Sunday night (July 30th), Rockaway based band Blac Rabbit will be bringing their vintage psych-rock tunes to Brooklyn’s Union Pool alongside Brooklyn fellows Taphari and Elbows. With their 2016 self-titled album, including six minute opener “Mind Space,” the band has drawn comparisons to Temples, MGMT, The Beatles, and Tame Impala.
