Surf-y, garage rockers, the Saylavees, bring their tunes to Union Pool 2/11

Posted on:

With an old-school surf aesthetic, and some serious bad bitch vibes, the Saylavees are laying down totally dreamy garage rock. The NYC-based band features three-part vocal harmonies that feel both dulcet and haunting, and pair perfectly to their fuzzy guitar sounds and punchy beats. Think black sands and night-time, summer drives with the windows down, and you’ve captured some of the mystic surrounding the group. Check them out live at Union Pool 2/11 with Alana Amram and Greg Cartright, and be sure to hit the play button on the track below. – Olivia Sisinni

Indie rockers Deal Casino land Arlene’s Grocery residency

Posted on:

It’s the end of January, and if you’re like most people, the enthusiasm behind those New Year’s resolutions are slowy starting to melt away. Though we can’t help you with that new gym membership losing its initial allure, if "seeing more live music" happened to chart on your New Year to-do list, you’re in luck. Deal Casino, a hard-working, indie rock four-piece from industrious Asbury Park, is coming to a venue near you, and we totally recommend catching them live. The band utilizies a mixture of minimalist sounds and hard-hitting riffs to create grooves that are as infectious as they are instantlly compelling. Their latest release, The Cannonball EP, features tunes like "Panama Papers," a timely state of the nation track, and "Purple," a wistful song that seems to capture the general, 20-something maliase. Catch the band live at theire Arlene’s Grocery residency (playing alongside Gillian on 01.31) and stream single ‘Panama Papers below. – Olivia Sisinni

The Casey Hopkins Duo delivers bare-faced rock ‘n’ roll on “Touch EP”

Posted on:

The Casey Hopkins Duo has a huge sound for a two man project. The Brooklyn-based band plays unapologetic, bluesy rock ‘n’ roll with a brazen swagger and an eye to psych bands of the late 60’s. Their latest release, Touch EP, was recorded to tape and has all the warmth and crackle of an old rock record, but the addition of some sinisterly fuzzy guitars keeps the band sounding unlike classic-rock, copycat acts. That and singer Casey Hopkins’s crazy charismatic vocals make The Casey Hopkins Duo a must-listen. Stream them below. – Olivia Sisinni, Photo by Sacha Lecca

Alexander F brings explosive garage pop to Baby’s All Right on 02.11 for LP release

Posted on:

Alexander F is electric, loud, and something that you’re not likely to forget, and from the opening bass hits of new single "Swimmers," you can tell that they’re here to get rowdy. The Brooklyn-based garage pop band offers wild musings on the absurdity of life, but serve it up with a side punk snarls and raucous beats–yeilding a sound that’s as fun and unhinged as it is utterly catchy. Check them out at Baby’s All Right 2/11 alongside Total Slacker, Exhibition, and Really Big Pinecone for their new record release, but do yourself a favor and stream them below in the meantime. – Olivia Sisinni

Supertouch brings heavy jams to St. Vitus 1/19

Posted on:

The 90’s were a time filled with gritty, grungy, sloppy, yet wonderful alt-rock music and Supertouch was no exception. With a musical style in the vein of contemporaries like Mudhoney, Melvins, and Bad Brains, Supertouch still managed to have their own sound and left a mark on music with their powerful riffs and F-You demeanor. After reuniting in 2010 (and losing none of their 90s swagger) the band is still killing it and will hit St. Vitus with Into Another and High Discipline on January 19th. Check them out live, and be sure to stream them below.-Jocelyn Huggler

Garage rockers Stuyedeyed to play Drexlers 1/24

Posted on:

Stuyedeyed is serving up brash and brazen rock music with a major vintage vibe. With fuzzy layers so thick you can practically wrap yourself up in them, the Brooklyn-based band delivers a serious 70s guitar rock feel and loads of lo-fi goodness. Their latest single, "Mr. Policeman," deals with the themes of the BLM movement, and is sonically as unhinged as ever, offering up feral sounding vocal lines that compliment the frustration embedded in the lyrical content. Check out the single streaming below, and catch the band live at Drexler’s 1/24 with Best Behavior.-Olivia Sisinni

The Undercover Dream Lovers bring their angular synth pop to Our Wicked Lady on 2/4

Posted on:

The Undercover Dream Lovers’s cover might just have been blown. The NYC synth-pop band recently sold out Rough Trade, and has been getting attention from a glut of music blogs. I guess it’s hard to stay covert when you’re busting out catchy dancehall tunes–especially when tracks sound far larger than the bedroom they were recorded in. The solo project of Brooklyn-based Matthew Koenig, The Undercover Dream Lovers delivers synth-heavy hooks, angular instrumentals and soft, understated vocals that together have the kind of magic that will instantly draw you in. Catch him at Our Wicked Lady 2/4 with Saint Marilyn and Violent Sands, but in the meantime, stream his latest single below. – Olivia Sisinni

With a sound expansive enough to get lost in, Cavern serves up stoner metal vibes with the atmospheric depth of post-rock. Fuzzy but tight soundscapes adorn their latest record, Outsiders, but there’s also tons of angular riffage to chew on as the band weaves between full-force metal grit, and more nuanced, dulcet melodies. Catch them at the Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge 2/25 with FoghoundCaustic Casanova, and Mantis Toboggan and in the meantime, listen to them below.-Olivia Sisinni
