On Friday(9.28), Bushwick’s Meadow Street spot Paper Box will be lending its stage to a showcase of six local distillers of rock/hip hop blends, with as headliners colourburst party-makers Shinobi Ninja . Just like Wordspit, also on the bill, they’ve been in the studio for a while – that is to say… new music to be expected here. The evening, hosted by comedy/hip hop act We Stole The Show, will also be the opportunity to cacth Xombie, self-defined "hood metal" five-piece, just back from the first stretch of their ‘Apocalyopse’ tour, who’ll be back on the roads from the following week. OXYMORRONS (whose collaboration with Wynter Gordon was released last week) & Small Axe will be completing the line-up; loads to celebrate, and apparently, free beer from 8-9! You can find all the details here.
From the NYC Open Blog: Chainwave plays The Rock Shop 9.28
Chainwave (formerly indie rock duo and Deli Magazine artist of the Month The Wicked Tomorrow) has just released a music video for new single “Bloodhounds”. Shot entirely with iPhone camera’s, the video was directed and edited by frontman Ian Jacobs. “Bloodhounds” and it’s accompanying B-side “Both Hands” sees the band (Ian Jacobs – vocals/guitar and Michelle Feliciano – vocals/drums), now a trio with the recent addition of longtime producer Ben Rice on bass, expand upon their brand of dark and melodic rock and roll, infusing it with surfy undertones and psychedelia. The new material has garnered early comparisons to Primal Scream, Deerhunter and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Chainwave plays The Rock Shop on Friday 9.28, as well as Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg on 10.4 (with Jangula). Check out the new video below. (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). The Deli NYC Open Blog is powered by The Music Building.
When Eric Biondo goes center stage: Beyondo
The saying ‘always the bridesmaid, never the bride’ doesn’t apply to songwriter/producer/trumpeter/Awesomeface Eric Biondo. Not content to back up musicians from bands including TV on the Radio and Passion Pit, Biondo has carved a unique alias for himself with his ongoing project Beyondo. From towering vocalist and cornetist, Eric reveals himself a master of merging divergent genres from Baroque classical to Ivory Coast afrobeat.
Now coming off his unexpectedly ambitious full-length ‘Siren Science’ from earlier this year, he returned early August with a new single ‘Come Around’ that leaps off a walking bassline, showcasing a round of vocals suitable for any cookout/fireside jamboree. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
On a ride with NYC’s Sins Of The Loose Buttons
Anyone wondering what’s coming next for Brooklyn might take a look at the kids from Sins of the Loose Buttons. A high-energy quartet able to bring the party with them from Santos Party House down to last year’s Miami Music Festival, Loose Buttons wants nothing from their career but to give some of this energy back to anyone out there looking to bounce a beach ball the next show you head out to. Their debut ‘Silent Snow’ has all the potential of a group of dudes barely twenty, already tackling enormous harmonies and in some cases, complicated choreography.
The group should be announcing new dates soon. Download their record from iTunes in the meantime, and check out the band take the city by music and bicycle in their video for ‘Retrobox’ below. – Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)
Taking lessons from The Happy People Band
Happy People may have just written this year’s Brooklyn anthem. The song of the same name, while encouraging you to find love wherever you can, is really an ode to the kind of love only our city’s residents are really capable of experiencing. The band equally paints this anthemic heart into their latest video for APT’ from their self titled EP. Only this time it’s not so much an ode to the ciyt, but a montage to hard work… and long, drawn-out kisses. Happy People Band is an exciting feast of noise and turbulence, bringing soul to the otherwise challenging experiences of urban life. Check out their latest video below and see what it takes to get the girl. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
Fort Lean releases new EP + plays Glasslands 11.1
Fort Lean’s newest single ‘Sunsick’ comes crashing against you like the mysterious characters confronted on Williamsburg’s beach in the song’s new video. This is a band with all the tell-tale makings of the ‘next big indie thing.’ Surf-ready, psychedelic anthems = check. Renowned producer (Patrick Wemberly of Chairlift) = check. Expertly dyed lead singer hair = check. Lead singer Keenan Mitchell not only has shiny locks, but a soaring tenor to match, and new EP ‘Change Your Name’ should be a good indication of things to come for the still young group. Check out Keenan’s bizarre hangover in the video below, and see them when they come to Glasslands November 1st for the EP release party. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Savoir Adore plays free Mercury Lounge show 9.22
Savoir Adore’s new album is on the way; ‘Our Nature‘, set to be released on October 16th, was introduced at the end of last year with their single ‘Dreamers’. As we got closer, the Brooklyn duo recently revealed a new track off the record, ‘Regalia’, electro – pop/rock jam as delicious as its title sounds with some groovy basslines and generous layers, danceable rhythmics along the lines of Dreamers, but where that one was… well, dreamy, this is ensemble coming on with twice as much of a kick. An inviting teaser, for sure. Before they hit the road to promote their new album throughout the month of October, Savoir Adore will be playing a free show (!) at Mercury Lounge this Saturday (9.22), sharing the bill with Montreal’s Stars.
Talk Normal debuts new single + plays 285 Kent 9.29
On the first few seconds of ‘Cover’ with that brain-grating loop of faint cymbal sounds, it seems like we’re in for some bizarre adventure into sonic discomfort– as would generally be the case with with Brooklyn duo Talk Normal, who for just about five years, has been building its fan base from one record to the next with offset rhythms upon noise. Andrya Ambro & Sarah Register’s new single, premiered two days ago via Noisey.com, kept exploring the more stripped-down facet of their sound, that rite-in-the-name-of-dissonance aesthetic they had going on across the last two records; but as the track progresses, building up to a passionate and glowing climax one menacing beat at a time it reveals a channeled side we never really met before. Intense. A smashing preview of the album to come, on Joyful Noise. Talk Normal will be playing at 285 Kent on September 29th with Pop. 1280 and Guardian Alien.
Hey Guy at Arlene’s Grocery 9.21
One-half mall punk brats, one half Glee Club dropouts, Hey Guy’s music is the utter manifestation of their ‘business on the top, party on the bottom’ sense of fashion evident from the band’s Facebook music player. And that’s the attitude you need to have here when checking out Russian-born singer Boris Pelekh’s feelings of 20-something alienation and paranoia sandwiched inside the half pipe-ready riffing and beats that once served bands like Incubus and Deftones pretty well. It appears Queens, NY has yet to let us down when it comes to rocking out this corner of rock’s pantheon, and Hey Guy is here to scratch that itch. Join the band as they send off both Pelekh and drummer Daniel Jakubovic – who’ll be on the road for while with American Idiot: The Musical – tomorrow (9.21) at Arlene’s Grocery, 9pm. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
Industries of the Blind play Deli CMJ show on 10.17
For those of you sick of being lazy at the beach and ready for some epic jams to get you back in the swing of things, look no further than post-rock ensemble Industries of the Blind. Lifting off to planets only visible to bands like Mogwai or Sigur Ros, the instrumental nine-piece includes three guitarists, an industrious drummer, and two very hard-working violinists. This is a band that starts at 10 and keeps hashing out an idea until it clears your skull of all misgivings. And with song titles like "The Lights weren’t that bright, but our eyes were so tired," who needs lyrics anyway? Check the band out when they play The Deli’s Post Rock/Orchestral CMJ stage at The Living Room on 10.17 with You Bred Raptors? Cuddle Magic, Doe Paoro, Friend Roulette and a few more. The full list of Deli CMJ shows will be announced towards the end of September. – Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)
Deluka works on new album + releases new track ‘Stranger Than Fiction’
Last week, Brit-turned-Brooklynite band, Deluka, debuted a new track, “Stranger Than Fiction” on RCRDLBL.com and gave fans a taste of what’s to come on their upcoming record currently under construction. Deluka, known for their hook-laden and contagiously danceable electro-rock, have built their career on melodic and catching dance tracks, from their “Sleep is Impossible EP" to a full-length record, “You Are the Night,” and several remixes along the way. The lady-led group continues to create sharply produced tracks and. “Stranger Than Fiction” is no exception. The four continue a successful path and their recent track lays the groundwork for a highly anticipated record. Download “Stranger Than Fiction” here . – Meijin Bruttomesso
Icona Pop moves to NYC + releases new single
New York City welcomes Icona Pop, the Swedish electro-punk duo whose new single “I Love It” (streaming below) is blowing up. “We just moved here,” declared IP’s Aino Jawo online last week, “so everyone out there who wants to show us a good time, please come and dance with us!” Actually, no sooner did they touchdown, than Icona Pop went right back to Europe for a brief tour where they’ll debut material from their upcoming EP, "The Iconic" (out October 16). Despite their penchant for big choruses and crystal-clear vocals, “I Love It” seems to de-bunk early comparisons to Abba with the line, “You’re from the ‘70s, but I’m a ‘90s bitch.”
Jawo and fellow Stockholm-native bandmate Caroline Hjelt moved from London to New York following last year’s guest appearance on Chiddy Bang’s underground hip-hop charter, “Mind Your Manners,” which took off on both sides of the Atlantic (and was included on last year’s Now That’s What I Call Music 39). Lyrically, their next single, “Ready for the Weekend,” sticks pretty close to the formula, but according to Jawo, “It’s kind of more up-tempo, dance-ier,” which she says owes its vibe to the London scene. “It’s not the same punk feeling that ‘I Love It’ (streaming below) has.” With that in mind, we look forward to how NYC will help shape the duo’s next phase. – Brian Chidester
