The Dirt Daubers @ Exit/In, 7/23

Posted on:

J.D. Wilkes is sort of kicking it in Music City this week. The Legendary Shack Shakers rock Hard Rock tonight with raw cowpunk blues, and on Saturday, Wilkes’ side project The Dirt Daubers (known for a decidedly less hellacious brand of rockabilly than the Shack Shakers) take over Exit/In with The Devil Makes Three. The Daubers, who are Wilkes, wife Jessica and Shack Shakers bassist (and Nashvillian) Mark Robertson, hit up Nashville and a handful of other cities to promote the Sept. 13 release of Wake Up Sinners! Expect blasting harmonicas and banjo-plucked originals and covers from this LP, which is the band’s debut on their own Colonel Knowledge Records.

The Legendary Shack Shakers @ Hard Rock, 7/21

Nashville Scene is halfway through its Sounds Of Summer series at the Hard Rock, but there are still two nights of fun left. Just to give you the heads up, rockabilly aficionados The Legendary Shack Shakers shake it up this Thursday at 7 p.m. Beanpole frontman J.D. Wilkes alone is worth the trip; watch him make attack after brutal attack on the mic, harmonica, whatever while the sounds of a devilish, rip-roaring southern punk fill the room. Get $5 tickets here in advance or pay $10 at the door.

JEFF @ Bonnaroo, 6/10/11

The brothers Orrall put on one of the best performances I witnessed throughout my Bonnaroo experience, and it was only partially because they were on a smaller stage and getting close to the front wasn’t such a horrific pain in the ass. JEFF the Brotherhood left their kraut rock numbers in Nashville, playing instead all the intense and hooky stuff to a dense and hyper crowd at the On Tap Lounge (i.e. a little white tent plopped into the dust) Friday night. I could hear the last of Primus’ bass lines gurgling from Which Stage while waiting for JEFF to get started. Once they did, the tent was blown out with “Bone Jam,” “The Tropics,” “U Got The Look,” “Hey Friend,” etc.

It was typical JEFF the Brotherhood business. Jamin was in a constant bouncy stupor behind the drums while Jake hopped up on amps to deliver relentless, riff-heavy jags before an audience that included a handful of crowd surfers, a creeper with a camera and some familiar Nashville faces. Even if some of their songs stuck together in a noisy audio blur, JEFF banged out scuffed-knees-and-cheap-beer jams with such enthusiasm and energy, nobody gave a shit. To prove the point, the crowd bent the rail separating them from the pit just to get a little closer to them throughout the quick and dirty set that ended all too soon. – Jessica Pace

ALL OF THESE BANDS ARE GREAT. GO LISTEN TO THEM. They rarely interfere with the headliners so unless you’re just spending all of your time on the gigantic waterslide–(that’s where I’ll be), you have no excuse. Make sure to stay in the shade, wear your sunscreen, and stay hydrated with liquids other than booze. Catch ya on the slide!–Erin Manning
