JEFF the Brotherhood talk record labels, play Walnut House, 11/4/11

Posted on:

Music industry novices and hopefuls of all types, lend your ears, and get to Murfreesboro’s Walnut House tomorrow evening.

Youth Empowerment through Arts & Humanities (YEAH) presents Seafood Hotline, Mom & Dad, and our favorites, JEFF the Brotherhood. Preceding their performance, Jake and Jamin are going to get into the ins and outs of running their nearly 10-year-old label. These guys built Infinity Cat with little knowledge of how to run a label going in; now they’ve got over 60 releases from some of Nashville’s best underground talent. Must be doing something right.

Did we mention this Q&A session is free?? No reason not to go. The seminar starts at 7:30, show is at 8:30. Tickets are $10, though there’s a $2 discount for MTSU students who attend the Infinity Cat Q&A and bring their student ID.

Benefit Show @ Belcourt, 11/4/11

Posted on:

Great show, great cause, sad circumstances. This Friday, four Nashville bands are playing the Belcourt Theatre to benefit the Oasis Center Bike Workshop and pay tribute to their friend, Schuyler Vassen. A former Belcourt employee, Vassen died from a tragic bike accident Sept. 14.

Colorfeels, Buffalo Clover, The Grayces and Jessica Breanne & The Electric Hearts are on the bill and hope to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a helmet (Vassen, sadly, was not).

All proceeds from the show will go toward buying helmets, toolkits, etc. for the Oasis Center Bike Workshop. Created by the Oasis Center and Halcyon Bike Shop, the workshop is a free, six-week program that provides bikes and education on safe bike riding to underprivileged Nashville kids.

Prizes include a Halcyon bike, helmets designed by local artists and much more donated from Nashville stores, bars and restaurants. The show is at 9:30, and tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Learn more about the event and purchase tickets here.

New Glossary album released today!!

Posted on:

Some of our most favorite southern rock ‘n’ rollers out of Murfreesboro, Glossary, release their seventh full-length today via Last Chance Records and This Is American Music. Titled Long Live All of Us, it’s an upbeat little southern rock record, dolled up with lots of keys and pedal steel. And it kicks ass. Stay tuned for a review, and below, check out bassist Bingham Barnes in one of several trailers for the record. Watch out for Nashville showdates at Mercy Lounge Nov. 18 and 19.

the little bear on Live & Reel

Posted on:

Live & Reel, a one-take acoustic monthly video series profiling Nashville’s independent musicians, debuted last month with awesome performances by Natalie Prass and Evan P. Donohue. On Oct. 14, Live & Reel caught indie folk act the little bear on camera. The band decorated the studio with pretty lights and candles for the occasion and premiered three new songs. You can watch and download “Sweet As Honey” and “Hello” here; join Live & Reel’s mailing list to see the third, “Heaven.”

The National Underground Grand Opening, 10/15

Posted on:

There’s nothing particularly underground about this renowned celebrity hotspot and music venue co-owned by Gavin DeGraw and brother Joey. Featuring roots, rock and country acts seven days a week, this formerly New York-only hangout has recently branched out to Nashville – 105 Broadway to be precise. They’ve already scooped up some of Nashville’s favorites – Thief, Lions For Real and Evan P. Donohue (who plays Oct. 4) have scored slots on The National Underground calendar. But the venue’s making it official with the Grand Opening party on Oct. 15. Hilary Williams, The Cold Stares and Joey DeGraw are scheduled to dole out tunes for the evening.

About The Kingston Springs…

The Kingston Springs have really taken America by the balls this year. They’ve already had phenomenal turnouts at Lollapalooza, SoundLand and Austin City Limits, and this weekend they’re heading to Atlanta’s Peachtree Music & Arts Festival (they play Saturday at 3:45 on the BMI stage if anyone fancies a daytrip). And we can hardly wait for the new record from our favorite southern indie blues twangers. The album is still untitled, but we’ve been told they’re wrapping up vocals in the next couple of weeks, and the album should be out early 2012. Listen to the teaser below and check out their ACL interview and private performance. See pics of the band with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. at Austin City Limits and with J. Roddy Walston & the Business in Memphis here.

SoundLand – The Black Belles, Those Darlins, JEFF, 9/24/11

Posted on:

There was a lot of rocking girly action going on late in the evening at the Neuhoff Factory Party Stage on Saturday. The Black Belles, Those Darlins and JEFF the Brotherhood were among those who closed the night, and SoundLand, with three killer sets on a secluded hill near 1st.

After seeing this dark quartet play, November seems like a long time to wait for The Black Belles’ self-titled debut, though we were repeatedly reminded that we could purchase their 7” in the “big yellow truck” from Third Man Records parked near the stage. These gothy fledglings, who’ve been taken under Jack White’s wing, are like four Elviras covering The White Stripes – they’ve got the same gritty guitar and spare thunderous drums of the late duo, adding in their own foreboding bass and vampire-ish keys.

Those Darlins know how to get an audience high – using some combination of white-trashed-out cowpunk, bits of ’60s and ’80s pop, backwoods vocal twang, imperfectly skilled musicianship, a genuine interest in the audience, and miles and miles of enthusiasm. In a flashy gold sequined one-piece, kinda-frontlady Jessi Darlin (all three ladies and gent share vocals) tramped around the stage, abusing her guitar and staring wide-eyed into the faces of the crowd in the entrancing “Mystic Mind” from Screws Get Loose. The set included the title track as well as others from their sophomore record like “Waste Away,” “Fatty Needs A Fix” and “Be Your Bro.”

The catching favorite “Red Light Love” from their debut weaseled in also, along with a revving new song “Burn Me Up” and some sexy “Shakin” delivered by Nikki. Two free 7”s made their way into fans’ hands that night; one made an aerial landing from Jessi’s hand into the crowd, and the other, she announced, would be given to whomever acted the craziest through the following song (it turned out to be a guy dancing on the shoulders of his buddy with arms outstretched). All were down-to-earth, charismatic and incredibly into their performance.

When JEFF went on to wrap up the night, the usual pushing, shoving, stage diving and beer sloshing ensued among the typical assortment of JEFF fans – a delightfully diverse mix of hipsters, bros and older, average dudes. It could have a lot to do with the atmosphere, but there just isn’t a bad JEFF song. They pulled from Heavy Days and We Are The Champions – neither record has become worn – and whipped out a prolonged new number that featured an awesome drum solo from Jamin. Part Two happened at the after party. – Jessica Pace
