Sometimes we like to take a look at the Deli’s Local Charts and see who’s up and coming in the scene; today, we’re highlighting Quinn Lewis, a Brisbane-born pop artist who came to Nashville four years ago. After a couple of successful singles last year, Lewis signed with Arista Records on the heels of releasing his latest single "Hanging On", a dark and pulsing dance-pop tune about a relationship on the rocks that just won’t end. The video for the release features Lewis singing in a series of destitute locations, such as a run-down motel, a swamp, and a past-its-prime convertible. Take a look at it for yourself below. – Will Sisskind
Rocky Bottom releases full-band LP “Mr. Nothing”
It feels like it’s been a while since we featured an indie folk act here on The Deli Nashville, so here’s Mr. Nothing, the first full-band effort from Rocky Bottom, the musical act backed by singer-songwriter Alex Hernandez. If the tracks on this disc sound fresh from Side B of The River, chalk it up to Hernandez’s Jersey roots shining through the Southern folk affect in his voice. Songs like the knee-slapping foot-stomping "Stunt Man" appeared in a stripped-down form on Rocky Bottom’s latest EP Dive Bars and Tip Jars, as did the song of the same name which reminds us of a souped-up "Piano Man". But on Mr. Nothing, they get rounded out from the help of Hernandez’s bandmates and friends, all of whom bring a community folk sound straight to your eardrums. Check out Hernandez playing the title track from Mr. Nothing at Magnetic Sound below. – Will Sisskind
Aspasia performs at The East Room w/ American Roommates on 01.31
You know Soccer Mommy. You know Diet Cig. You know Snail Mail. And if you enjoy their indie pop fronted by a female singer with an ear-catching voice, you’ll enjoy the work of Aspasia, the rising group led by Asia Chrones who brought her songwriting chops to Nashville from Illinois. Her group has recorded and released three singles in their short while together, but they’ve played quite a number of shows around the city and are catching some interest throughout the scene. On January 29th, Aspasia will fill a bill with fellow Nashville indie bands American Roommates, Burkish, and Lakehouse Boys; catch them live if you can, for their Instagram posts show that they’re quite tight as a performing act. Check out their latest single "Anthony" below. – Will Sisskind
Electronic artists Eve Maret and Dream Chambers kick off tour at The Cobra on 01.25
Electronic artists Eve Maret and Jess Chambers (aka Dream Chambers) are taking their latest synth-crafted tunes on the road, kicking things off with a show at The Cobra on January 25th. Maret and Chambers recently co-founded Hyasynth House, the Nashville-based electronic music collective for femme, trans, and non-binary artists. Their efforts have provided a place for musicians around the city to connect, share their work, and collaborate. And while their good work has taken up quite a bit of time, Maret and Chambers are taking a week to travel around the southeastern states, share their newest music, and spread word about their work. At their kickoff show at The Cobra, Maret and Chambers will share the bill with EDM artist and recent expat from the Bay Area, Stacian, as well as the funk-tinged songs of Soft Bodies. As always, Hyasynth House won’t tolerate any harrassment of any kind at the show, so if you go on Friday night and feel unsafe, let them know. Take a listen to Eve’s latest album No More Running, as well as Dream Chambers’ latest album White Roses, below. – Will Sisskind
Scissormen front man Ted Drozdowski releases new LP “Coyote Motel” on 01.25
For those Nashville music aficionados who know Scissormen, you will love knowing that the touring band’s front man Ted Drozdowski has ten new songs in the form of the crowdfunded record Coyote Motel, his latest solo work unleashed for your ears as of January 25th. The album marks Drozdowski’s embracing of a musical style he calls "cosmic roots", which he says come from eclectic influences such as Muddy Waters, Pink Floyd, and and Daniel Lanois. You hear elements of those artists in songs like "Still Among The Living", where a slow beat churning with wandering guitars and rumbling bass arpeggios carries Drozdowski’s haunting lyrics toward your memory. Drozdowski will perform tracks like "Still Among The Living" from Coyote Motel at The 5 Spot during the album’s release party on February 16th; you can watch the music video for the song — which features aerial dancing from Nashville’s own Suspended Gravity Circus — below. – Will Sisskind
Singer-songwriter/producer David Smalt releases single “dear old Earth”
David Smalt dropped his new single "dear old Earth", and it’s every bit as professionally tuned and yet DIY-esque and loose as his previous release, the 2018 debut LP Fragile Magick. Smalt’s vocal range and dreamy delivery shine on the new track, which features his sparse guitar strumming tucked into waves of dark synths and a clockwork drum machine. Though the first part of the song contains wonderful lyrics written in Smalt’s poetic style, the second half washes you away into a climax of chords and tremolo before sinking you into a watery soundscape and fading to a single note. It’s got the bedroom pop vibe that’s catching all the attention online, but "dear old Earth" shines in its execution and production. Don’t sleep on it; listen to the track below. – Will Sisskind
A Deli Premiere: Fuel on Fire release cover EP “Them” on 1.18, plus new single on 2.1
See those dates? They reflect how busy Fuel on Fire have kept themselves coming into 2019. You may have seen their recent set at the Hard Rock on January 12th. But over the past year, the Doerfel Brothers have worked hard on getting a slew of releases ready for the winter. First up — which the Deli is proud to premiere — is Them, an EP chock full of covers of songs by the band’s favorite artists. The tracks come from titans who influenced Fuel on Fire’s sound, such as U2, Led Zeppelin, and Supertramp. To celebrate the release, the band will perform a show for the students and parents of Homer Pittard Campus School in Murfreesboro; the school’s choir appeared in a music video for the band’s cover of U2’s "With Or Without You". The show will consist of the premiere of the video, a mini-concert by Fuel on Fire, and a performance of "With Or Without You" by the band and the school’s choir.
Following the homage to their inspirations, the band’s single "Figured You Out" — a new original — will drop on February 1st. Remember: These four brothers released their single "Heartbreak" along with its music video last August. They’ve shown no sign of slowing down. Perhaps working so hard keeps them warm in this chilly winter weather? In any case, take a listen to the premiere of Them below. – Will Sisskind
A Deli Premiere: Eye For None release “End of Communication” LP on 01.18
Nashville power rockers Eye For None have worked around the clock getting their first album End of Communication ready for release. This debut disc, which drops on January 18th, contains a year’s worth of material honed to a fine point, with tracks like "Love" throwing political jabs at the anti-immigration groups and "Things I Dream About" touching on identity and anxiety. Bandmates Kelly Hoppenjans, Steven Edwards, Chuck Stearns, Dylan Callahan, and Heather Miller each bring their own unique touch; Hoppenjans’s voice and the band’s cutthroat rhythm send shockwaves of energy on each track. Anyone who enjoys Paramore will like this album and the songwriting tact of Hoppenjans and Edwards; in fact, Halestorm engineer Jordan Logue brought his experience to this album, so fans of that group will also find a lot to enjoy in Eye For None’s debut. Take a listen to "Smile", a featured song from the album, below; grab the full album when it’s out. – Will Sisskind
Genre-benders Okey Dokey play Mercy Lounge on 01.25
As if the past several posts haven’t given enough indication, January has presented the Nashville indie music connoisseur with plenty of shows to attend. Should you consider yourself such a sommelier of tunes, head down to Mercy Lounge on January 25th to hear psych-rock genre-benders Okey Dokey play some tracks from their upcoming album Tell All Your Friend (sic), which drops on March 29th. After touring throughout 2017, the band — which consists of Aaron Martin and Johny Fisher — spent last year writing and collaborating with fellow musicians and friends such as Nick Bockrath of Cage the Elephant and Liz Cooper to create what you’ll hear on their upcoming sophomore album. Tell All Your Friend already has a few singles out; one of them, "When They Get Older", has a nice retro bop to it, and it features the funk touch of Rayland Baxter. Check out the music video for "When They Get Older" below. – Will Sisskind
Roots rocker Sarah Potenza plays upcoming album at The 5 Spot on 01.15
Maybe you know Sarah Potenza‘s name from Season 8 of NBC’s The Voice, where she wowed Blake Shelton with her bold vocals. Maybe you’ve seen her around the Nashville scene, showing off her brassy songwriting skills on stage. Whatever the case may be, you should take note: She’s coming back with a brand-new album called Road to Rome, which drops on March 8th, this year’s International Women’s Day. The album — produced at the studio of Jordan Brooke Hamlin (known for her work with the Indigo Girls) — takes inspiration from and pays homage to powerful female figures in music legend, such as Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, and Bette Midler. It’s an album for all artists, but particularly for those who identify as women, and it comes on a day for celebrating their achievements as loud and as raucously as possible.
If you want to hear tracks from Road to Rome before the album’s release, Potenza will perform the new record cover-to-cover — along with some old tracks — at The 5 Spot on January 15th. And if you want to refamiliarize yourself with her music now, check out her music video for her 2016 single "Monster" below. – Will Sisskind
Superdrag’s John Davis and Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws reunite for new single
John Davis of Superdrag and The Lees of Memory runs a four-track cassette production label out of Nashville. He and Nada Surf’s own Matthew Caws — old pals from the scene — happened to touch base last May after Caws wrapped up a tour in Music City. Their new release "We Are In The Wild And We Are Home", is the result of their hangout, and it emanates pure delight. Indian instruments phasing over a motorik bass and drums with Caws’ and Davis’s voices chiming lyrics of love and self-care makes this a must-play track for the beginning of 2019, a year which — let’s face it — follows a few pretty down ones. Davis and Caws seem to have their eyes on something brighter for the next twelve months; even if it’s something far out of reach, this song will make you feel like it’s possible to catch it.
Take a listen to "We Are In The Wild And We Are Home" below; should you decide to purchase it, all proceeds from the single go to disaster relief organization Americares. Side note: The cover art for this single — painted by Davis himself — bears the title "Remember To Look For Beauty When Christmas Shopping (Especially Then)". – Will Sisskind
Nashville’s local acts go Nirvana at The Basement East on 01.10
At the start of a new year, you may find yourself thinking about the music that you listened to in the past, and realizing that many of your favorite albums came out decades ago, making you feel quite old. However, "old" is just a state of mind, and at a concert celebrating thirty years since the release of Nirvana’s Bleach, you’ll throw yourself into the pit with the reckless abandon of a riled-up fourteen-year-old.
Join some of Nashville’s most rollicking acts on January 10th at The Basement East as they cover Nirvana’s discography — Bleach, Nevermind, and In Utero, along with some well-known B-sides — in honor of three decades since the band put out their first record. Acts include HER, Taco Mouth, Step Sisters, and many more, all of whom will share the stage and channel Kurt, Krist, and Dave through their voices and instruments. Among the bands on the bill are The Dead Deads, who just released a live album on Christmas Day. Take a listen to it below and imagine the Deads pounding out their version of "In Bloom", then get down to The Basement East on the 10th and hear it for yourself. – Will Sisskind
