Music News: Ruby Amanfu, Milktooth, Cherub, and k.s. Rhoads

Posted on:

It’s only Tuesday and this week is already full of new stuff to check out. There’s a lot to hear, so we’ve condensed it all into a quick and clickable blog post for easy consumption:

Ruby Amanfu has teamed up with Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard to create a painfully beautiful cover of Memphis Minnie’s "When My Man Comes Home." Recorded to add to the Third Man Records Blue Series arsenal, this song as well as a cover of "I Wonder," originally by Rodriguez, will be available on vinyl March 12th. In the meantime, the song is available to stream (on repeat) over on the Entertainment Weekly website.

For some reason, electro-pop duo Cherub are giving their fantastic 100 Bottles EP away for free. Featuring six tracks of experimental neo-soul, this EP does not miss a beat. Catch the debut and stream over on This Song Is Sick or buy the EP on iTunes.

Currently getting the new album release treatment is known solo artist and renown local collaborator, k.s. Rhoads. Available today, The Wilderness will celebrate its release alongside a myriad of local talent on March 8th at 3rd & Lindsley. Until then, stream the album on Spotify or on Spinner.

Lastly, Milktooth have released the fifth episode of their ongoing "Stay At Home America" covers series. This time, the band tackles "Eyes That Say I Love You," from Beck’s Song Reader. The song and video feature tons of local talent, such as Alanna Quinn-Broadus of Alanna Royale, Daniel Ellsworth of Daniel Ellsworth & the Great Lakes, Lindsay Johns of NUDITY, Regan Freeman, and Levi Weaver. Catch it here:

Debuting as *repeat repeat, Kristyn, Jared, and drummer Andy Herrin have joined forces with Gregory Lattimer of Now Records and released their first single, "12345678." The Deli Nashville’s Weekend Itinerary

Posted on:

The first day of March drops us right into the weekend, and this weekend intends to keep us busy. Get your pencils ready, because we have some recommendations for you:

Friday

Tonight at the 5 Spot, Photo Ops will play the album release show for his gorgeous debut, How To Say Goodbye. The album is Terry Price’s solo project, following his time with Oblio, and it expertly navigates melody and hardship through 10 tracks of the rare sort of bedroom pop that maintains a cinematic beauty and skips the derivative synth-soaked buzz pop that keeps ending up in car commercials. Neil O’Neil and Milktooth open the show and the party starts at 9 pm.

Saturday

On Saturday we’ll see you at the Mercy Lounge/High Watt for the Official SXSW Send Off Party. Your first round of beer is on the kind folks over at Third Shift Amber Lager, the show is free, and it was just announced that the first 100 people through the door will receive a token that can be redeemed for a Third Shift swag bag. The decision is clear, but here is the lineup:

MERCY LOUNGE
Howlin Bros.
Luella & The Sun
Wild Cub
Patrick Sweaney
Protomen

HIGH WATT
The JAG
Los Colognes
Jacob Jones
Alanna Royale
Magnolia Sons

The fun starts at 8 pm. Come say hi if you see us around!

Sunday

If you’ve recovered from Saturday and are ready to go another round, head down to 3rd and Lindsley to catch The Delta Saints before they head for Europe. Quiet Corral will open, and music starts at 8 pm. –Brianne Turner

Parlour and Juke’s Live Cuts with Jacob Jones

Posted on:

Our newest writer/intern, Jonathan Parrish, stopped by Parlour and Juke’s shop show on Saturday and brought his rundown on the event to The Deli – Nashville. Read on to find out what happened, and give Jonathan a hi-five the next time you see him out! – The Deli Staff

—–

Every few months, the ultra-stylish hair salon Parlour and Juke throws a house party called "Live Cuts." Holding true to their namesake, the parties feature live music which elevates the Americana-chic Parlour into a juke joint. The most recent event on February 23rd boasted inclusive Yazoo brews and the tunes of Jacob Jones. While the beers ran out before everyone attending could redeem their allotted two, and the room felt like a sauna, the overall vibe was good. Jones played songs from his recently released Good Timin’ in Waynetown as well as some old standards. For those of you unfamiliar with Jones, he sticks closely to boogie-blues, opting to keep things classic instead of injecting any modern twists. The sounds were like being at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance while Marty McFly plays "Johnny B. Goode," and the room felt like a fun backyard BBQ sponsored by Levi’s.

You can catch Jacob Jones live at the Third Shift Amber Lager presents: Nashville – the Official SXSW Send-Off show on March 2nd. –Jonathan Parrish

The Lonely Biscuits Rally the Nashville Community for A Shot At SXSW

Posted on:

Saturday night, the Lonely Biscuits hit the stage with Black Sea Royalty and our band of the year, Daniel Ellsworth & the Great Lakes. The four-piece brought their self-described "funk/hip-hop/soul/pop" to the Exit/In before releasing their music video for "Make Ya Music," which was unveiled as a gift to the band’s fans for sharing the picture posted above 300+ times on Facebook.

At only 19 years old and as current Belmont students, the band is rallying the local music community to get behind them and vote for them as the mtvU College Artist Woodie winners. The winner of the poll gets the chance to travel to Austin and open the Woodies Festival at SXSW. No other artist in the poll is from Nashville, so feel free to rep your city freely. (You can vote as many times as you like.)

Calling All Interns!

Posted on:

We’re on the hunt for new faces to add to the Deli Nashville family! If you live in Nashville, have a talent for writing and at least 10 hours per week to throw away on the rock n’ roll dream, then you’re exactly who we’re looking for.

You can do most of the work from home in your pajamas, and the jobs assigned will vary, including simple editing tasks, re-phrasing press releases about bands, posting live shows listings, working on The Deli’s database, and some blogging. You will be able attend shows as a writer for The Deli, so being 21+ is by no means a requirement, but it will help you in reaping the full benefits of the internship.

If you’re up for a very laid-back challenge, send your clips and writing samples along with a short summary about yourself to nveditor[at]thedelimagazine[dot]com, and good luck!

xoxo,
The Deli Staff

Review: East Nashville Underground, Winter 2013

Posted on:

If you somehow missed all of the hype surrounding one of Nashville’s biggest indie events, you may need to check your hearing and keep your ear a little closer to the ground so you aren’t missing the coolest part about living your best life in Nashville, Tennessee. East Nashville Underground brought their A-game and a seemingly endless supply of free booze to The East Room on Friday and Saturday nights, selling out their weekend event for the first time in ENU history.

Though we could make it to only the Friday night show at the Underground (as we had a date with the mainstream over at The Ryman on Saturday night), East Nashville Underground’s place in the Nashville indie community is undeniable. Highlighting independent bands just as heavily as the independent music community itself, Kristyn and Jared Corder have created an event that defines the romance of being involved in the local music scene in Music City. From new fans to OG Undergrounders to industry folk, it’s safe to say that no venue in town housed as many sweaty hugs and eyeball kisses as The East Room did over the weekend.

On Friday, doors opened at 9 and the stage featured the likes of Cult Logic, Vinyl Thief, All Them Witches, Alanna Royale, Machines Are People Too, and Magnolia Sons. All of the bands were predictably stellar, and it was especially thrilling to finally catch Machines Are People Too live. Each set made trying to plan a bathroom break feel like the ultimate music fan’s predicament, the easiest solution being just resolving to hold it and concentrating on dancing.

Though we all try our best to broaden the scope of this tight-knit music community that is on the precipice of incredible things at an amazing time, the Corders have created something that is simultaneously intimate and all-inclusive. From their understanding of how to run a solid music event as business owners to their clear love of music as fans themselves, the payoff is something we all benefit from with each passing season of East Nashville Underground. We attempted to live tweet the vibe from The East Room on Friday night, but it’s difficult to capture that kind of energy in just 140 characters. But if you missed out on the chance to make it inside or didn’t catch a hug from the guy who was giving them to, seriously, just everybody, mark your calendar; East Nashville Underground’s doors will re-open on May 10th-11th, and we intend to see you there.

Sunday

Depending on how loud you want to get, the local music scene is giving you some options for the death rattle of your weekend. The Exit/In has Western Medicine, along with Psychic Ills and Cloudland Canyon.
Western Medicine are up first, so show up early.

On the quieter (yet still bad ass) side of the rock spectrum, you can find Anna Haas in the 12th & Porter lounge in all of her fiery, redheaded glory, reminding us that being a singer/songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee isn’t all cowboy boots and cover songs.
