Andrew Leahey’s “Airwaves”, out 03.01, channels golden classic rock era

Posted on:

As a musician, I hear plenty of songs where I curse the ground upon which I walk, for I’ve heard the kind of sound that I wish I could produce. Enter Andrew Leahey, whose tracks have caused me to spit more well-deserved expletives at the soil than I can count. Leahey’s new album Airwaves — which drops everywhere on 03.01 — channels the songwriter’s favorite artists such as Petty and Springsteen, whose music he cherished as a kid. The album comes as the result of a creative spurt done after a brain operation that almost cost Leahey his life. Thank the lucky stars for his survival, because Airwaves has tracks that channel the earworm classic rock sound that will get locked in your head. "Moving Like The Weather" is a love track that thunders with stadium-rock style passion. Leahey’s cover of Echo & The Bunnymen’s "Lips Like Sugar" rips just as hard as the original. And album singles "Airwaves" and "Queen and King of Smaller Things" will have you — and audiences around the country — falling for Leahey’s blue-collar but polished sound.

Catch Leahey & the Homestead play 3rd and Lindsley on March 3rd when they come through town on their tour. Take a listen to the anthemic "Queen and King of Smaller Things" below. – Will Sisskind

Shannon Sanders releases “Fight On” to commemorate Black History Month

Posted on:

This Black History Month has felt grating, if you’ve read the news as of late. It feels like there’s not much to celebrate. And yet, Shannon Sanders‘ new single "Fight On" carries the spirit of the month high above the storm clouds raining down on this past February. With his soulful voice, the award-winning producer and Nashville native enlists the help of his Nashville Urban Choir to deliver a neo-gospel battle cry of a song. The punch it delivers might just help you — in this second month of the year — to dust off the New Year’s resolutions that you’ve already put aside and start reaching for those goals again. At the very least, it might just inspire you to rise above the shadows. Take a listen to "Fight On" below. – Will Sisskind

Scott Mulvahill hits NPR’s Tiny Desk; plays Ryman Auditorium 03.17

Posted on:

Armed with his trusty upright bass, singer-songwriter Scott Mulvahill hit up NPR’s Tiny Desk to play a few songs for the Internet. Having performed for years with Ricky Scaggs and rising to become one of Nashville’s most accomplished bassists, Mulvahill earned the spotlight as he performed fan favorites like 2016’s "Begin Againers". Though he performed that song solo, he brought his band along to perform "Gold Plated Lie", the latest single from his newest album Himalayas. Mulvahill showed his musical versatility when, after playing the rocking tune, he once again went solo with bass and bow for "Himalayas", creating a spacious sound that captivated the audience in the NPR Tiny Desk room and on YouTube viewers’ screens everywhere. Mulvahill’s on tour now with Lauren Daigle; he’ll return to Nashville on March 17th to play the Ryman Auditorium. Catch his Tiny Desk performance below if you haven’t already watched it. – Will Sisskind

Renee Wahl previews new LP on 2.23 at True Music Room

Posted on:

Renee Wahl is an Air Force vet and a physics major. This article needs to start with that fact, because it’s apparent that Wahl knows the exact sequence of quarks in a song to get a reaction. Science puns aside — with endless apologies — Wahl and her band the Sworn Secrets have a show coming up at True Music Room on February 23rd, where she’ll bring her electric brand of Americana to your ears. Maybe you’ll catch a track from her upcoming LP Cut To The Bone, which is set to drop on March 15th. Two singles have already seen light from the album: "To The Bone", a crooning track about trust or lack thereof, and "From Here to There", a grittier ballad about discovery and loss. Take a listen to the soaring "From Here to There" below. – Will Sisskind

Adia Victoria’s new LP “Silences” drops 02.22 at onset of national tour

Posted on:

We hinted at the release of Adia Victoria‘s upcoming second album Silences last December, when Victoria played Delta Blues Christmas at Third Man. Now it’s February, the last of the holiday decorations have come down, and Victoria’s about to head out on tour to support the new record, which drops on the 22nd. The polymath artist — who on Silences sings songs that range from soaring ballads to dance-inducing blues rock numbers — co-produced the album with The National’s own Aaron Dessner. You can therefore hear plenty of emotion come through in the layers of masterful production on Silences; however, the base melodies and lyrics coming from Victoria’s voice are enough to convince you of her talent. Watch the video for "Different Kind of Love" below and see for yourself the power and conviction that Victoria delivers. – Will Sisskind

Sensational instrumental guitars abound on William Tyler’s “Goes West”

Posted on:

One particular album has ranked high on the Nashville and worldwide Bandcamp charts over the last few weeks: William Tyler‘s instrumental guitar album, Goes West. The Nashville-based musician based his follow-up to 2016’s Modern Country on a trek to California; you can hear that Pacific vibe in the post-rock-like harmonies and subtle flange of the undistorted guitars on tracks like "Not in Our Stars" and "Eventual Surrender". Tyler also shows off his finger-picking chops on "Rebecca", a song that might remind Allman Brothers listeners or former Guitar Hero players of "Jessica" both in music and in title. Goes West makes for great sit-back-and-relax material in your headphones; if you’d rather see Tyler perform the songs live, his current tour will take him home to Nashville on March 10th to play 3rd and Lindsey. Listen to "Fail Safe", the second track from Goes West, below. – Will Sisskind

Power pop artist Sam Hoffman plays Springwater Supper Club on 02.23

Posted on:

Sam Hoffman released his power pop album Fairweather last fall, introducing the world to his mix of power pop and indie rock. With a little bit of soul and a touch of fire, Hoffman has pressed two of his songs from his debut album into vinyl with the help of local lathe-cut record producers Groove Family Records. Those two songs — the previously-released "Glencrest Lane" and new single "All the Places" — make a good pair for a single, and they each lend a little bit of their own to charm to Hoffman’s live shows, where he dazzles the audience with his lyrical wit and melodic expertise. You can catch Hoffman live at Springwater Supper Club on February 23rd. Take a listen to "All the Places" below. – Will Sisskind

Wheats releases second EP, video for grungy folk single “Shooter”

Posted on:

We’re checking in to feature the latest music from Nashville songwriter Anna Elise Anderson, also known in childhood and on stage as Wheats. The fuzzy folk artist released her second album, Wheats II, last month; it features more of the swampy, Southern states-inspired music which powered her debut last year. The stand-out track, "Shooter", has a grunge vibe that separates it from the more folk-oriented material on the record. It has a music video by Miami artist Jen Clay which includes some stop-motion aspects, plenty of abstract hands, and swarming bugs; it gives off a sweet "Sledgehammer" vibe. Check it out below. – Will Sisskind

Maxwell James releases indie-folk single “The Violence Close To Home”

Posted on:

Side note before we even begin: As I started writing this post, I smelled vape smoke. And truth be told, that’s what Maxwell James‘s latest single "The Violence Close To Home" feels like. The lyrics have darkness to them, and James delivers them with a smoky voice that has a deceiving chill tone to it. The instrumentation feels like something to which you’d sway rather than brood. It seems strange for a song with such depth to feel so blissful, but James — who released his debut EP last year — has a knack for creating music that catches you off guard and makes you go "Wow." Take a listen to "The Violence Close To Home" below, and stay tuned to James’s Facebook page for upcoming show dates. – Will Sisskind

The Slow Drag releases new blood-pumping single “Beat of My Heart”

Posted on:

We have laid the indie pop on you thick here at The Deli Nashville over the last few days, but we have good reason for that. When you’ve got catchy singles like "Beat of My Heart" coming from artists like Austin James aka The Slow Drag, you have to talk those up no matter how much pop (or Coke, I suppose) you’ve had to drink. James puts together a track worthy of the ears of fans of Grouplove or Vampire Weekend, mixing karate chop guitar chords with a drum beat and background vocal "whoa-ohs" and "la-las" that scream Early Song of the Summer Contender. James, who spent much of his life in California, lets the sunshine through in this song; fans of his previous band mid-Aughties West Coast pop outfit Everybody Else might take a serious liking to it. Check out "Beat of My Heart" below. – Will Sisskind

Patrick Damphier releases debut LP “Say I’m Pretty”

Posted on:

Late last year, we previewed the release of indie pop artist Patrick Damphier with "Pretend It", one of the singles off of his debut album Say I’m Pretty. The album dropped on February 1st, with that song and previous single "Under My Door" included in the ten-track mix. The album — the first solo release from Damphier, a former member of the Mynabirds and Angel Olsen’s band, among other groups — showcases an indie pop-rock sound like Real Estate, for anyone feeling nostalgic for that early 2010s chill vibe. Damphier’s collaborators Richard Swift, Molly Parden, and Jessica Lea Mayfield appear on the record as background vocalists; you can view a performance of "Odd Man Out" with Parden below. Stay tuned for news of hometown shows to support the release of Say I’m Pretty. – Will Sisskind
