Sweaters, “Beggars”

Posted on:

Let this track kick off your week. Sweaters was founded by brothers Adam Sweaters and Jason Lankford, who went on to add four more members, resulting in a big rich sound and small army of voices to harmonize with. “Beggars” has a meaty, 60’s pop slant to it. Its infectious creep in no way sets you up for “Good Ghost,” the b-side of their EP. It’s a soft, sighing riff on du-wop, with a chorus culminating with the line “I’m dead-“ that could be perfectly fitting on this Monday morning, especially if those fluorescent office lights are a little too bright for your hangover. Sweaters are having a tour kickoff show at The 5 Spot on September 3rd with The Sudonistas, Saturday Night Special, and David Ohney. –Terra James-Jura

Cory Branan Album Release Show at The High Watt 8.23

Posted on:

Anyone on the East side of Nashville may have passed by the mural of Cory Branan’s mug and the words "Listen to Cory Branan" floating right above.  If that is not enough to turn some ears on to his cache of rapid-fire and heartrendingly candid Americana, maybe the title track of his brand new album will. "No Hit Wonder" not only expounds on the hardscrabble struggle of, well, probably anyone walking around East Nashville, but also also has The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn and Steve Selvidge lending background vocals.  The strain of living is a constant throughout the album, but it’s articulated with deft lyricism and transmitted via Branan’s marvelously warm and unmistakable vocals. Another theme is the outpouring of love from the Nashville music community in the form of contributions from Jason Isbell, Austin Lucas, Caitlin Rose and Tim Easton. If that’s not enough to get someone to listen to Cory Branan, his album release show at The High Watt this Saturday (tickets avaiable here) should convert any laggers.  It promises to be a doozie: Branan will be accompanied with a full band and "very special guests." And if, after all this, someone still decides not to listen to Cory Branan, The Deli poses this question: what the hell are you doing in Nashville? -Terra James-Jura

Seriously, listen to Cory Branan.

Devan DuBois Releases Debut Album “Le Fou”

Posted on:

Wowee; you know something is good when it rocks you and leaves you a little shaken up.  Maybe it was just the frames of a snake coiling around Devan DuBois‘ hand, or maybe it was the never-broken tension that climbs in his video for "Long Live" that made me rewatch it a few times trying to figure out why my skin was crawling just a wee bit.  It could be that the video’s stark black and white spaghetti Westernisms conjured up some associations with Jim Jarmusch’s "Dead Man," and… that’s a journey I’m not quite ready to take again. Anyway, it’s a great visual complement to DuBois’ hyperactive sweep of Southern rock. His debut album, "Le Fou" (French for "The Fool") was just released on August 19th on Sensibility Music. With a hip-hop mind in it’s beatmaking but a definite twang resonating throughout, it ought to be a primer on how genres should combine.  -Terra James-Jura

The Ignorist, “There is No Vacancy”

Posted on:

The Ignorist came to me at a time when I’ve been going aggro on weights at the gym with Archers of Loaf’s "Vee Vee" as a soundtrack. So my ears were primed for an instant affinity with their slacker vibe and every-which-way skew of their guitars. The vocals never reach Bachmann-levels of agitation, but instead retain a slightly detached composure throughout their debut release, "There is No Vacancy." Below is "I Know They’re Blue," which should offer some consolation to anyone who misses 1994 (also, if you have ten minutes to invest, also check out "Hotel Ok," to hear how the track eventually dissolves around one guitar lick feeding on its own dejection.) The album is availabel via Cdbaby, iTunes and Google Play, although The Ignorist do not have any upcoming shows announced at the moment in case you wanted to get your sticky fingers around a physical copy from a physical band member. Keep an eye out for any changes to this situation at their Facebook page. -Terra James-Jura

Congratulations to The Cunning, Our Newest Artist of the Month!

Posted on:

The Cunning kind of swept this round, pulling ahead in the last few days with a sizeable lead.  Frontman Sean Cunningham (get it?) started the group in 2013 after leaving his New Zealand-based project ATLAS to return stateside. The foursome have been building their reputation as steadfast rock’n’rollers ever since. They possess a straighforward dedication to the genre, puncuated by a few refreshing jinks here and there thanks to seasoned veterans manning all four fronts. Their win coincides nicely with the release of their newest video, "Lonesome No More." The track is slightly reminiscent of The Features, with a little Anthony Kiedis spin on some of the vocals. It’s a great track to debut as a single; I can’t get enough of that gut-rumbling bass.  The Cunning are preparing to release their first EP this week, and have a show coming up August 23rd for The Hot Chicken and Jorts Festival at Mayday Brewery in Murfreesboro. At the moment is has not been confirmed whether the band will be performing in jorts, but positive speculation is high.  -Terra James-Jura

Ugly Kids Club Release Single “Good Love”

Posted on:

Ugly Kids Club released this single "Good Love" on Tuesday in anticipation of their upcoming EP "Head Games," due out September 30th.  It blazes by you like a comet of 80’s nostalgia, as interpreted by sparkly-eyed youths who would have no idea what to do with a Popple if they saw one. Age disparity aside, it’s a concrete track, thanks to glossy production and an irrepressible, unflagging energy that can’t help but bubble over out of the speakers.  It’s hard to dislike a band that describes themselves as "A pop-grunge band formed by Madonna, Andy Warhol and M83." Ugly Kids Club has a decent track record so far of making good music despite their insistence in reviving some of the worst bits that god-forsaken era, (evidenced here) so hopes are high for this EP.  Their next Nashville show will be August 26th at The High Watt with Lylas and Field Days.  Keep up with the band at http://www.uglykidsclub.com/. -Terra James-Jura

The Cordovas, “Do No Wrong”

Posted on:

One of the great things about writing for The Deli is being made aware of bands that would otherwise have flown under my personal radar (and they are legion.) So consider me thrilled to have been introduced to The Cordovas via our music submissions. Their second full length album, "Love Bravely" was released this May, and damn, it is magic. The Cordovas hit upon a very fluid form of alt-rock (as they bill themselves), channeling the bare bones grit of the Black Keys as well as the reverent soul of Matisyahu.  There are also elements of R&B and funk, with a few instances that could have been at home on a Modest Mouse album, all potential to make for a band trying to do too much at once if it weren’t for the capable direction of creator Joe Firstman. In additon to being a bottomless well of natural songwriting talent with years of touring experience with A-list acts, Firstman can claim four years acting as bandleader for The Carson Daily show.  The role required a high level of day-to-day adaptability, which plays strongly into the polish and cohesion of "Love Bravely." There’s something magnetic here; watch this video for "Do No Wrong," which is nothing but Firstman walking down the street looking like sh*t, and see if it doesn’t suck you in.  -Terra James-Jura

The Cordovas upcoming Nashville shows are August 21st at South Paw Supper Club, and August 28th at Soulsine Pizza.

Song Premiere: Dohse, “Fireworks and Lead”

Posted on:

Dohse, aka Nathan James Dohse is in the thick of becoming a Nashville success story.  Arriving here from Flagstaff, AZ after a decade with pop-meets-dance-party outfit Fight the Quiet, and seeking a new direction for his craft, Dohse began making music under his own name.  What he creates is a an alternative-leaning take on Americana, with a focus on writing a good flippin’ song above all else.  His newest track, "Fireworks and Lead," is so solid that if it were stripped down, passed around and spun on a country station, it would probably be a hit, because good music can cross genres with no border issues.  This is the second single from his upcoming debut EP "Old Roads," which is scheduled for release on Sept. 9th. His album release show will be this Wednesday, August 13th at the East Room.  With The Problems and Kristen Cothron & the Darkside rounding out the bill and cover at only $5, there is ample reason to get out on a Wednesday night.  -Terra James-Jura

Show Alert: Dustin Sellers at The Basement 8.11

Posted on:

Dustin Sellers might not be a name immediately recognized, but point out the immaculately-coiffed hypeman on a Magnolia Son’s stage, and things click into place.  Sellers has been cultivating his solo work for years, resulting in a far reaching range of material he describes as "different songs for different years." His sound is very riff-heavy rock with shades of 90’s alternative, interspersed with the occasional rueful acoustic number.  He can craft a pretty sharp tune, as evidenced in this video for "Bruiser" (and see if you don’t crack a smile when his trumpet player makes his first appearance.) This summer he culled some of his best pieces and released them as "The Valley" on June 24th.  On Monday evening he will be performing with Kentucky natives Ondezvous.  This evening will also have Angie Fenton baring her Motown heart after a two-year hiatus (if that name sounds familiar, it’s because she is Feedback Revival frontman Dan Fenton’s better half.) It should be a night of compelling performances, so consider staying home if you are allergic to emotion. The show starts at 9pm, and cover is $5. -Terra James-Jura

The Alarms Album Release Show at The Stone Fox 8.9

Posted on:

It took two years for The Alarms to get their debut album, "Real Tough Love" release-ready, because good stuff takes time and most things music always, always take much longer that one expects. However, listening to the title track (thanks to their label, Science Camp Records) makes those two years completely worth it.  There’s a strong ’60 rock sound to it, from the organ and the tone of the fuzz on their guitars, but it’s dished out with the energy of a basement full of punk rockers. The Alarms got some love from Lighting 100 earlier this year, and for plenty of good reasons: they’re distinct, coming across as a really aggressive version of the Kinks, and they can get it done in less than 2.5 minutes.  And they have tons of personality. Their album release show takes place at The Stone Fox this Saturday, with No Regrets Coyote, Bear in the Campsite, Jordan Hull and Juliana rounding out the bill. It is sure to be a stellar night of music, and a steal at only a $5 cover.  -Terra James-Jura
