As most Nashvillians know, crossing the Cumberland from East Nashville to Downtown isn’t always done… willingly. And for music to be suited for Broadway AND Gallatin, it has to fit into the very particular union of heart-tugging roots music, DIY-ing indie rock and boot-stompin’ Americana.
Dim the lights, plug in a lava lamp, pour up, light up and kick back, because Nashville’s psychedelic vagabonds The Breathe In, Breathe Out are taking us all on a journey into the depths of mind-altering garage/alt rock.
If we pressed the eject button on The DeLorean’s cassette deck, a mixtape of Billy Idol, The Cars, Duran Duran and Nashville-based Midnight Mantics would come popping out. The biggest mystery: What year was it made?!
Okay, while the name may not strike you as immediately familiar (or maybe it does, for all the wrong reasons) Benjamin A. Harper might be more recognizable dressed to the nines and in front of his soul supergroup The Magnolia Sons, as he often is around town since their inception in 2011. He has also been working on his own cache of solo material for just as long, music that has finally been recorded and is poised to hit the masses this Friday, July 24th. Titled Get Thee Behind Me, it is a ten-song exploration of his vintage fascination propelled by his no-holds-barred sensibility. Harper is throwing an album release show this Friday at The Basement with Anderson East and Jeseah Wells. While this show has been sold out for a minute, a free in-store performance at Grimey’s has recently been added at 6pm that afternoon, so despairing fans need not fret. We had the opportunity to ask Harper a few questions about the release; read on for a deeper look at the album. -Terra James-Jura
Nothing like a little friendly competition!
If you’ve been searching for a summer ’15 soundtrack, look no further. Nashville-based alt-garage rockers Bully have turned their raw rock ‘n’ roll angst into a debut album that will punch you right through the speakers then let you cry on its flannel-clad shoulder.
Two Boots Pizza is throwing the fourth grade class party of your dreams, but with booze!
It’s common knowledge that to really make it as a songwriter in Nashville, you have to write at least one good song about a train. Alex Vucelich is more than satisfying that prerequisite with his lastest single, "Johnson City."
B a r l e a u x emerged onto the scene last year with her debut LP Hillary Barleaux. A natural vagabond and adventurer, B a r l e a u x releases “Fire,” a track with a steady build and a sweeping arrangement. “’Fire’ is about leaning into that dark side when explaining to someone that you have problems with commitment.”
Joining the likes of other white-hot emerging Nashville bands, COIN is capitalizing on their 90s childhoods (and obvious love of synth,) and stepping out onto the national stage with plenty of grassroots-feuled momentum.
The 4-piece crew released their debut self-titled album last month and have already climbed to #5 on our "Popular Locals" list. Their dynamic combination of pop and electrorock is infectious, with ridiculously catchy hooks and danceable tempos.
Fresh off a stint with Betty Who, the boys are hopping on tour with new wave chart-toppers Neon Trees, then indie dance rockers Walk the Moon.
