This weekend, Bonaroo will bring thousands of music fans to Tennessee; perhaps you know this if you’re reading this post from traffic heading to Great Stage Park right now. One of the rising voices at the festival belongs to Patrick Droney, a recent signee to Warner Records who just released the music video for his single "Stand and Deliver". The song highlights Droney’s voice and intense bluesy songwriting style, which many might find similar to the likes of John Mayer, Sam Smith, or even early Adam Levine. Droney will perform at Bonaroo on Sunday night of the festival at 3:45 on the Who Stage; later this summer, he’ll play Austin City Limits, as well as an opening slot for Sheryl Crow. D.D. Island releases summer-soaked debut LP “Lost Dog”
Summer approaches, and D.D. Island’s new album Lost Dog marks the occasion with tracks full of bandleader Brandon Rhodes’s chilled-out arrangements and lyrics. Rhodes emerged into the Nashville scene with the release of the EP Last Summer in 2018, and this summer, the singer-songwriter continues to bring light into the world through grooves like "Sawtooth Sunshine", the first single from Lost Dog, which makes for perfect beach hammock music. Rhodes will take D.D. Island in its full band setup on a brief tour later in June to promote Lost Dog. Take a listen to "Sawtooth Sunshine" below. – Will Sisskind
Little Raven release new single “Magic Bullet” from forthcoming EP
If you want to get a little funky, Little Raven — past winners of The Deli Nashville’s Featured Artist poll — have released a new single called "Magic Bullet" to spice up your week. The single has the makings of an indie funk classic: Keenan Payne pumping away on the bass, Kyle Edmonston keeping dance-friendly time on the drums, and Brad Owens filling in the spaces with some ear candy key riffs. Add Rafael Green making his guitar sing and serenading with his breathy vocals, and you’ve got a summer track fired straight out of the chamber towards your eardrums. "Magic Bullet" is the first single from Little Raven’s forthcoming EP Let It Out, which drops this fall. Take a listen to "Magic Bullet" below. – Will Sisskind
Lost Stars release new summer pop anthem “Enough”
Lost Stars sound like the next band that will take the main stages at the big summer music festivals, what with their massive and anthemic pop sound, their introspective lyrics, and Damian Malnar’s powerful vocals. Their new single "Enough" takes inspiration from current mega-groups like The 1975 and Twenty One Pilots, but it avoids sounding derivative and instead brings fresh air into a pop scene that seems saturated. Plus, the message behind "Enough" makes it more than just a pop song; it stands as a testament to pushing forward through mental health struggles and learning what it takes to survive. Take a listen to "Enough" below. – Will Sisskind
Jeff Ruby releases grunge-tinged LP “Spiral”
Jeff Ruby shows his versatile songwriting chops on his new record Spiral, which came out on May 31st. The fifth album from the Indiana-born songwriter, Spiral takes sounds from Ruby’s influences — grunge legends like Nirvana and Soundgarden, and classic bands like The Beatles and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers — and gives back songs that go soft like a ballad ("Dream State 24") and hard like a grunge anthem ("Doomsday"). Ruby is currently on tour supporting Spiral; at most of his performances on the road, he’ll go solo, channeling all of the full-band energy of the tracks on the album through his voice and guitar. Indie pop artist Alex Di Leo performs 06.12 at True Music Room
Indie pop artist Alex Di Leo will perform at the True Music Room at the Cambria Hotel on June 12th; it comes as one of the first shows in a long string of performances around America. Di Leo released his latest album, the EP Strange Open Land, in November 2018, and his latest single "High" this past spring. The indie pop jam has hints of inspiration from groups like lovelytheband and Imagine Dragons, making for the sort of song that would stir up a crowd at a summer music festival or get people dancing on the beach. Check out Di Leo when he takes the stage at True Music Room on June 12th before he sets out on tour, and take a look at the music video for "High" below. – Will Sisskind
WATCH: The Prescriptions release vintage-inspired video for “She Is Waiting”
Back in March, The Deli Nashville featured The Prescriptions and remarked on the imminent release of their album Hollywood Gold, a bluesy, folk-rock album of tracks with sounds channeling classic artists like Neil Young and more recent acts like Wilco. The album is out now, and along with it, The Prescriptions have released their music video for "She Is Waiting". The video has a dreamy VHS-like quality to it, giving the simple visuals of the band a vintage look that adds a pop of color and charm. The Prescriptions take off on a month-long tour with John Paul White starting in Texas on June 6th; stay tuned for their return to Nashville on June 29th. Lucy Isabel plays record release show 06.13 at True Music Room
Jersey-born and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Lucy Isabel will release her new LP Rambling Stranger on June 14th, with a performance marking the occasion on June 13th at True Music Room at the Cambria Hotel. Isabel’s lived in many places throughout her life — the Jersey Shore, the Pacific Northwest, and now in the South — and all of her experiences throughout her travels have led her to write the songs on Rambling Stranger. The album has hints of Americana, blues rock, and soul, all molding together to form a powerful heartland sound that channels the feeling of endless exploration, both physical and spiritual. Take a listen to the opener from Rambling Stranger, "How It Goes", below. – Will Sisskind
David Smalt self-releases new song “On The Mountain”
David Smalt has released a heavy amount of tracks over the past couple of years, including the 2018 LP Fragile Magick and his single from earlier this year "Dear Old Earth". Now comes alt-folk positivity anthem "On The Mountain", the first song Smalt has written, recorded, and produced as a single unit. The one-person production matches the intimacy of the track; the song describes a rough point in Smalt’s life which took place during the chaos in Charlottesville in 2017. "On The Mountain" describes the impossible feeling of trying to overcome listlessness and lack of purpose, as well as the strength that it takes to finally do it. Take a listen below. – Will Sisskind
Country up-and-comer Cotter Hill plays 06.01 at The Basement Nashville
Cotter Hill has the sound of a country artist that’s played the game for years, but his first EP Sober Up came out just last year. Hill moved west from Cleveland, TN in 2016 to chase his musical dream, and already he’s appeared on the iTunes Country charts, toured the Southeast, and shown up on local radio. Throughout 2019, Hill has continued to build upon his career through even more shows; in fact, you can catch him at The Basement Nashville on June 1st, where he’ll perform on a bill with fellow local country artists Justin Spivey and Cameron Blackburn. Folk pop duo Hailish release summery self-titled debut EP
As the weather gets warmer, you’ll want some summery tunes to take with you to the coast. Hailish — the folk-pop duo of Ella Fernandez and Hannah Kroh — have a debut self-titled EP to provide those tracks for you. The songs bounce between jazzy grooves ("Shades"), country-tinged ballads ("Colorado"), and tender moments ("Stay", "No One Knows"). Each song will sound perfect through a Bluetooth speaker at the beach, a loudspeaker at the lake, or through a PA at the pool. After all, there’s a reason that Hailish call themselves "beach folk". Take a listen to "Colorado" below. – Will Sisskind
Ida Mae release new LP 06.10 at Grimey’s in-store performance
Though Ida Mae call Nashville home now, they originally hail from the UK, but their rough-and-tumble Americana music wouldn’t give you that idea. Like current tour buddies Greta Van Fleet, they have mastered the art of borrowing from artists they admire to craft a sound all their own. Ida Mae — the duo of Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean — will release their newest album Chasing Lights on June 7, and they’ll celebrate the event on June 10 at an in-store performance at Grimey’s. Chasing Lights features the production of Ethan Johns, who has worked with Kings of Leon and Laura Marling; Johns’ seat-of-your-pants production style and Ida Mae’s energy make Chasing Lights an electric listen.
