Those who know indie pop songstress Kelly Hoppenjans from her 2017 release Dreaming Is Easy will love her new digital single Every Which Way, which The Deli premieres today. The two new songs on the release — which drop officially on November 2nd — showcase Hoppenjans’s sound, with which fans of Ingrid Michaelson and Cat Power will fall in love. Both tracks on Every Which Way come from collaborations with other Nashville singer-songwriters: Hoppenjans worked on the title track with indie artist Natalie Royal, and the B-side "From Where I Stand" enlists the pop-folk lyrical skills of Jilian Linklater. Every Which Way precedes what’s to come next for Hoppenjans, which includes a full-length album in 2019. Listen to "Every Which Way" below. – Will Sisskind
Safari Room plays The East Room on 11.02
Safari Room have been active since 2016, but they’ve spent the past year in a fervor of recording frenzy, putting out their single "Antelope" in June and then their EP Actual Feelings in July. The versatile indie pop group stems from the musical and lyrical brain of Alec Koukol, who employs the help of friends and fellow Nashville musicians Simon Knudtson, Emma Lambiase, and Nathan Gamble to help bring the songs to life. Safari Room have continued to track songs in the studio throughout the summer and fall, meaning that new music could be on the way. They’ll play what they’ve been working on at The East Room on 11.02 with Luke Krutzke & the High Tides and Willix also on the bill. Take a listen to Actual Feelings below. – Will Sisskind
Gracie & the Valley release new singles in November ahead of LP
Gracie & The Valley have a sound like Sara Bareilles; light but cinematic, carefree while holding back a constant dread that threatens to bleed through the sheet music. Their latest single "Serotonin" speaks of chasing dreams and getting lost in the process; their upcoming tracks, which come from their soon-to-come LP Chrysanthemum, dabble in subjects just as heartwrenching. "Doorbell Dixie", which drops 11.02, speaks of nostalgic and unrequited love; "Did I Stutter", which follows on 11.09, chronicles an argument which showcases the vulnerability of love. Chrysanthemum releases on 11.16; Gracie & The Valley will mark the new LP with a show at The Basement. Take another listen to "Serotonin" below. – Will Sisskind
Freddy & Francine release video for “Half a Mind”
In July, we spoke at length about the track "Half a Mind" by Freddy & Francine, a soulful indie pop groove from the duo’s latest EP Moonless Night. Just last month, the singer-songwriters released a music video for the song, which showcases their humor as well as their fine lyrical chops. Since we’re a week or so away from Halloween, featuring a video that included ghosts — as well as the symbolized facing of said ghosts — seems appropriate. To give credit to the filmmaker: Danielle Mulcahy came all the way from Massachusetts to direct, film, and edit the video; she’s the perfect choice, since she’s known for her work with paranormal and extraterrestial subjects. Watch the video for "Half a Mind" below. – Will Sisskind
Lydia Luce releases debut LP “Azalea”; plays The 5 Spot 10.19
Lydia Luce released her debut LP Azalea back in September; it’s her first record since her 2015 debut EP The Tides. Azalea chronicles the solo adventures that Luce has taken in the years between albums, diving deep into dealing with loneliness, being alone with emotions, and learning how to deal with them instead of ignore them. Jordan Lehning co-produced the album alongside Skylar Wilson; the two notable Nashville producers help Luce bring through all of the passion she sought to pack into Azalea. You can hear songs from the record live at The 5 Spot on October 19th, where Luce will play on a bill with Texas’s Thomas Csorba. Listen to tracks from Azalea below. – Will Sisskind
Jet Setting release new alt-rock single “Come Around”
Alt-rock trio Jet Setting have kept themselves quite busy throughout this past year; since picking up their instruments in the spring, they’ve played several local shows and have released two explosive singles. Now the group have dropped their latest track, a string-back spitting five minutes of heartbreak and desperation called "Come Around". Behind Zach, John, and lyricist Logan — the members of Jet Setting — play a trio of Dayna Osan on violin and viola, Natalie Mays on cello, and Kris Luis on double bass. In non-release related news, the band have just launched their website, and although they have no tour dates scheduled for the time being right now, you’ll find show listings there in the future. Taco Mouth releases “A Deafening Silence” EP on 10.26 at The 5 Spot
The world needs bands with brilliant names, so thank goodness for Taco Mouth, who will release their new EP A Deafening Silence on October 26th at The 5 Spot. Taco Mouth formed in late 2017 as the brainchild of Erica Sellers and Angie Lese, two friends who started playing music together as CatFight in Louisville in the early 2010s. Nashville indie vets may know Sellers and Lese from The Dead Deads, the spiritual predecessor to Taco Mouth. Their music still sears eardrums with its punk inspiration; they seek to create songs that would’ve captivated audiences at CBGB or the Troubadour back in the underground’s first golden age. Watch the video for Taco Mouth’s first single "You Say" below, and catch the release party for A Deafening Silence on October 26th. – Will Sisskind
Lauren Morrow releases debut EP; plays Bluebird Cafe 10.16
On October 12th, Nashville folk-country singer-songwriter Lauren Morrow released her debut self-titled EP at a show at The Basement East. The new EP marks Morrow’s first as a solo artist, having split off from The Whiskey Gentry last year. This record compiles a handful of songs ranging from chronicles about family ("Viki Lynn") to a missing grandmother ("Barbara Jean") to getting psyched up over an episode of Mad Men ("I Don’t Think About You At All"). Morrow will perform songs from the record at her upcoming show at The Bluebird Cafe on October 16th, as well as at 3rd and Lindsey on October 28th for Lightning 100’s Nashville Sunday Night. For now, watch Morrow and her band perform "Viki Lynn" on Today in Nashville below. – Will Sisskind
Airpark release left-coast inspired “Devotion” single
Airpark released a new single called "Devotion" on October 12th, previewing what’s to come on their upcoming EP Songs of Airpark. "Devotion" was one of the first songs the indie folk brother duo recorded in Denver during sessions for the EP, which is being produced by Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley of the synth-pop group Tennis. It embodies a sunny vibe that speaks more to July than October, but that comes from the more left-coast inspired sound, where it feels like July almost all the time. The EP will include songs that have the sound you’ll hear on "Devotion", with the general theme centered on "confronting and overcoming confict". That record will drop early next year; for now, take a listen to "Devotion" below. – Will Sisskind
High South plays The Basement on 10.27 to release EP “Change in the Wind”
High South joins the family of American bands who tour around other countries to grow their following before building a base in the U.S. Though the group have a sizable fan base in the States, they’ve spent the years since 2015 making trips to share their music with audiences all across Europe. Now, on the heels of the release of their EP Change in the Wind, the band seek to expand their American footprint. Having just returned from a tour of Germany, High South will perform three shows later this month; one in Chicago, one in Indianapolis, and one at home in Nashville, all to promote their record release. Guest singer-songwriter, LA-based Pearl, will join the band for their shows, adding her voice to each night of High South’s trio of harmonies. Watch the video for High South’s latest single "Make It Better" below, and catch them in Nashville on October 27th at The Basement. – Will Sisskind
Lola Montez re-releases debut album “Glean” with two new tracks
Heavy alt-rock group Lola Montez released their debut EP Glean last year to rave reviews, so they’ve expanded upon it to release a deluxe edition with remastered versions of the original seven songs, along with two new songs mixed into the tracklist. "Carousel" and "Strange Things" — the two new tracks — fire all engines with Inga Rudin’s soulful voice and the band’s stadium-ready riffs. The band are touring to support the re-release of Glean; they’ll return to Tennessee on October 26th, when they’ll play at Kings Dining & Entertainment in Franklin. Listen to "Carousel" below. – Will Sisskind
The Lone Bellow releases new EP “The Restless” on 10.19
A new EP from The Lone Bellow is on the way, set for a release on October 19th across all platforms. The Restless already has its title track available to the public, along with a video supporting it. This new EP marks the first where the trio of Zach Williams, Kanene Donehey Pipkin, and Brian Elmquist perform without a backing band, although they’ve done such a thing during their live shows to fan and critical acclaim. The band recorded the songs on The Restless in the same way that they perform those sans band songs during their show: One mic, little production, and all of the elements that could impede a clean take fair game. If you hear chairs creaking or wind rustling while listening to "The Restless" or their cover of The National’s "Pink Rabbits" — another single the band’s released — then that’s part of the song. The Lone Bellow supports the release of The Restless with their current TRIIIO tour, which includes shows consisting entirely of just the trio singing around a mic; their trail will take them through the Northeast down towards Nashville, where they’ll perform three homecoming shows in December.
