From The Deli’s Open Blog: Buffalo Clover, Real Roots Music

Posted on:

Buffalo Clover is a rare plant that grows in the wake of stampeding buffalo. It is also the name of Nashville’s most eclectic band. The songs are original, energetic, rootsy and anything but sappy. Their styles range from underdog gypsy punk to motown boxcar blues, vaudvillian acid rock to train wreck folk. Their songs are a unique blend of carnival dirges, quirky waltzes and dark nursery rhymes. "Roots music isn’t synonymous with the stripped down sounds of Pete Seeger or Woody Guthrie though those two are widely credited as the fathers of American roots music. In fact, the genre’s massive legacy includes bluegrass, jazz, gospel, country, even vaudeville. Hailing from Nashville, Buffalo Clover takes this wide-angle view of roots, fearlessly stitching together blues, rock, country, folk and gypsy music into an eclectic, theatrical tapestry." -Kate B., Ourstage Blog "Margo’s vocals have a Southern charm but also the melancholy warmth found in Jenny Lewis’ material. -It’s like coming home." -Tiffany Daniels, God Is In the TV Zine. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

Look What I Did release new video, play The End on 02.05

Posted on:

Look What I Did hit you without mercy like a professional boxer – but they do it in a very sophisticated way, they’re no thugs, they are like… artsy fighters. The band somehow manages to mix math rock with post punk energy and grandiose melodies sometime reminiscent of Enon and/or the later Faith No More. The band (that placed 17th in our Best of Nashville’s Poll for emerging artists recently released this new video – a low budget thing that works perfectly in showcasing their spazzy charm. The band will be playing live at The End on February 5. Highly recommended!

Those Darlins are the Deli’s Best Nashville Band of 2009

Posted on:

Those Darlins might be remembered one day as the band that reinvented rock’n’roll by replacing the blues element with the garage one – could this sort of genetic mutation have happened in any other place than Nashville, in any other time than the new millennium? The band’s musical recipe is as simple as it’s effective, and the results are infectiously charming. Congrats to them for winning The Deli’s Best of 2009 Poll (full results here), mostly thanks to the vote from our jury, that gave one a 1 point edge over electronic indie poppers The Non Commissioned Officers – a band with an ever growing line up.

Third place for theatrical epic video game celebrators The Protomen, who also won our Best of 2009 Fans’ Poll (full results here)

This is the final Deli’s Year End Best of Nashville Fans Poll’s Top 10 – full breakdown of the votes here.

On Wednesday we’ll publish the results of the Best of Nashville 2009 Poll, which is calculated through a rather complicated system involving a jury of scene makers, The Deli’s writers, our readers, the bands’ fans, and also through an initial open contest – rules can be found here. – Stay tuned!

The Protomen win Deli’s Year End Best of Nashville Fans’ Poll. Composite Chart announced soon

Posted on:

It was a long and complicated process, but our Best of Nashville Poll has finally come to an end. We have gathered all the data from jurors, writers, and readers, and we have indeed the first verdict: Alt Rockers The Protomen (once again) are The Deli Readers’ Best Emerging Nashville Artist of 2009 – they took our Fans’ poll by storm with more than 400 votes. Congrats to them! The results of our Composite Chart (the one including the votes from the jury and the writers which will elect the Deli’s Best Emerging Nashville Artist of 2009) will be announced on Wednesday, as we need a few days to organize it and add up the votes (yeah, we suck at math).

Congrats also to PUJOL and Bad Cop – who placed 2nd and 3rd in the Fans’ Poll.

Year End Best of Nashville Readers’ Poll now on!

Posted on:

Deli Readers,

The Deli’s Year End Best of Nashville Poll has finally entered its final stage with the Readers’ Poll – sorry for the delay! This poll will contribute to our composite chart that will elect the Nashville Best Emerging Artist of 2009 and also forge the Deli’s Readers’ Best of Nashville 2009 chart. Winners of both charts will be rewarded with prizes and Deli love – a poll like this one is currently happening in all our 9 city branches, for more information about how our polls work go here, for info about the pool of prizes here.

The Deli Polls’ goal is to give exposure to new and exciting local bands in a playful but meaningful way. The polls are open to all emerging artists from the specific area covered by our site, and the votes are cast by

1. a selected jury of local scene makers,
2. our writers,
3. the Deli readers including – of course – the bands’ fans.

Unlike many other contests from many other music websites, our polls seem particularly effective in rewarding quality artists that end up having a long and successful career. This is a shortlist of bands that – in past editions – placed in the top 3 positions in our local polls: Yeasayer (NYC 2007), The Dodos (SF 2008), Vampire Weekend (NYC2006), Kid Sister (Chicago 2008), Drink Up Buttercup (Philly 2008), Chairlift (NYC 2008), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (NYC 2005), Vivian Girls (NYC 2008).

We hope you’ll enjoy the selection of bands we are bringing to you – if you are here to vote for one particular band, please take some time to click on some of those headphones icons in the list on the right – we are sure you’ll find some great local music you were not aware of.

Nashville Open Contest for Year End Poll – Results

Posted on:

Hard rocking NashVILLAINS,

We apologize for being a little slow lately with all things related to our Best of Nashville 2009 poll for emerging indie artists. Our NYC Readers’ Poll (which we recommend you to check out here) has brought an unexpected amount of traffic to our site, which has caused our server to crash several times yesterday, making us waste a lot of time. Because of this we decided to postpone slightly the beginning of some of the other cities’ readers’ polls, Nashville included.

Anyhoo… we just finished collecting the nominations from our knowledgeable and attractive panel of jurors and we are now ready to hit you all with an impressive list of awesome local emerging 100% independent artists. If you’d like to learn more about our voting process, please check out the rules here.

While we are organizing the list of nominees, we wanted to announce the winners of our Open Contest. For those unaware, this Contest is the part of our Best of Nashville Poll that nominates artists through an open submission system – while the majority of our finalists are freely selected by a jury of local bloggers, promoters and scenemakers. We’d like to thank all the artists who participated in our Open Contest, the ones who submitted directly, and the ones who qualified throughout 2009 by winning our monthly polls.

Choosing the winners was not an easy decision to make for The Deli writers, which is a testament to our amazing music scene. We are happy to announce that PUJOL, Milktooth, Vermicious Knids, Marj!, Square People, Diarrhea Planet and The Slow & Steady Winner have been selected to join our jurors’ list of nominees, and special congratulations to PUJOL (in the picture, sun tanning, rather sexily) who were (was?) the overall winners of our Open Contest!

The Nashville Readers’ Poll will start soon, keep an eye out for it!

La Paz Light Night: Coach Vs. Potamus

Posted on:

Remember those new dance parties at La Paz Restaurant we mentioned a while ago? No? Well we went, and it turns out they’re pretty sweet. That DJ Potamus can throw down some pretty phat tunes, there’s no cover, and the drink specials don’t hurt either. But this week is going to be even sweeter because Coach (from 12th and Porter’s Coach Vs. Kase) is going to be the guest DJ this week! Looks like they’re pulling out all the stops this time, so make sure you check out Nashville’s newest weekly dance party this Friday!
