SHEL play The Back Corner 11.16 to benefit Music Health Alliance

Posted on:

Quite a bit is happening for SHEL these days. The four Holbrook sisters who make up the group — Sarah, Hannah, Eva, and Liza — have a show on November 16th at The Back Corner benefiting the Music Health Alliance. Their harmonies and catchy indie pop tunes, which they’ve honed since their official formation in 2010, align them with HAIM, although SHEL’s music takes a bit more of an experimental and often more atmospheric turn. Along with their extensive touring and playing for benefit shows, the Holbrooks have also teamed up with composer Kevin Dailey to score the Facebook Watch series Queen America, which follows the trials of Catherine Zeta-Jones as Vicki Ellis, an Oklahoma pageant coach. The series begins on November 18; SHEL will host an online Facebook Live watch party before the premiere. But until then, you can catch them live on 11/16 at The Back Corner, and watch their latest video — for their single "Send My Kiss" — below. – Will Sisskind

Riley Parker releases debut single “Vandalized”

Posted on:

Songwriter Riley Parker has released a debut single called "Vandalized", the first recorded sample of what the artist’s Facebook page touts as "queer-dreamy indie rock". Imagine a Nashville version of Adult Mom, or perhaps a mellow Laura Stevenson. Parker has played a few shows around Nashville over the past year, and has even gone down to Atlanta to play Porchfest, which promoted itself as "Georgia’s largest organic free-range crowd-sourced music festival". "Vandalized" is now available on all music streaming sites; take a listen to it below. – Will Sisskind

Navy vet and songwriter Jared Ashley releases video for “Cherrybend”

Posted on:

This past weekend was Veterans’ Day, and The Deli Nashville just so happened to get the perfect track in our inbox to feature in honor of that. Singer-songwriter and Navy veteran Jared Ashley put out a music video for "Cherrybend", a new song from his upcoming album. The song’s title comes from Operation Cherrybend, an annual event in Wilmington, OH that seeks to spread awareness about veterans’ issues. "Cherrybend" follows in that operation’s footsteps; in the music video, Ashley highlights that 22 veterans commit suicide every day. He wrote the song and acts in the music video as a tribute to one such veteran, Jeffery “Ozzy” Otzwik, with whom Ashley served in the Navy. Ashley hopes that with the song and the video, people might start to understand the issues that veterans face, and help create spaces for them to relax, unwind, and get the support they need. You can watch the video for "Cherrybend" below. (And of course, The Deli Nashville thanks Ashley for his service.) – Will Sisskind

Indie group Low Sol release self-titled EP

Posted on:

Relative newcomers to the Music City indie scene Low Sol have released their first EP, a four-track collection of songs they’ve played and honed since their formation. The band, led by singer-songwriter Landon Hunt, consists of music students seeking to create music based on influences from major indie names such as Weezer and Moose Blood. You can hear hints of those bands in Low Sol’s sound; they fall somewhere between jangle pop and the anthem pop of groups like Grouplove. That electricity in their music helped their single "Tongue Tied" appear on Spotify’s "Nashville On The Rise" playlist. The group released their self-titled debut EP at The Well on November 3rd; the album’s now available on their Bandcamp page. Take a listen to it below. – Will Sisskind

Jon Pattie releases atmospheric EP “Reflections Vol. 1”

Posted on:

Rather than release a new LP of twelve songs, singer-songwriter Jon Pattie has chosen to release four three-song EPs; the first of these, called Reflections: Vol. 1, dropped on November 7th. The first salvo of atmospheric tracks by Pattie showcase his self-reflective lyrics, his knack for playing with effected string and horn instruments, and his ability to arrange harmonies around his carefully crafted melodies. Pattie, who hails from Texas, calls Bon Iver and John Mayer inspirations; the softness from both of those artists comes through on the new EP. Take a listen to the three tracks below. – Will Sisskind

Jacque Jordan releases new Americana EP “The L.J.”

Posted on:

There’s a smoky and carefree nature to Jacque Jordan‘s brand of folk indie; her newest EP The L.J. contains five tracks that Jordan has honed over the last several months to best show her style. As an Atlanta native who calls Nashville home, Jordan embodies the warmth of a Southern autumn night and the passion of a songwriter searching for the right words to paint a picture of her present moment. All of the songs on The L.J. contain field noise, which gives the impression that they were recorded live; that gives these polished songs the rough edge that makes Jordan’s latest EP interesting. The album is available on Spotify; watch her live performance of the track "Wild Oats" below. – Will Sisskind

Iranian-American songwriter Sam Hale releases LP “Somewhere Between Love & War”

Posted on:

Sam Hale came to Nashville from Los Angeles in order to record and release his third album, titled Somewhere Between Love & War. This collection of songs written and performed by Hale came to life with the production expertise of Sam Kassirer, known for recording with Josh Ritter. The new album showcases Hale’s blend of sounds, taking inspiration from standard fare indie rock and mixing in shades of EDM, classical, baroque pop, and emo. The title of the album sounds not just like an observation about the times we live in, but about Hale’s own inner turmoil about uprooting his life to chase music in Nashville. But having listened to Somewhere Between Love & War, the end result sounds like it was worth it. Listen to the album below. – Will Sisskind

Jon Worthy and his band The Bends play Radio Cafe on November 19th, but in the meantime, they’ve released a video for their track "Have It Your Way", an indie pop jam featuring fellow Nashville vocalist and songstress Stelle Amor. Levi Miller releases album from the depths “Tales In Red Writing”

Posted on:

We must bring to your attention the music of Levi J. Miller, especially his latest release Tales In Red Writing, which came out just in time for Halloween. Miller, who releases albums at a breakneck pace, continues his exploration of darkness in music on his new record, going full goth on songs like "Trepanning (-)" and "Petrification". He also includes touches of doom metal in tracks like "Tetragrammaton" and prog-rock on "Eliphas". In the seven tracks on Tales In Red Writing, you may receive a full crash course in all of music’s darkest genres; Miller pulls the delivery of each off with ease. Americana artist Sierra Ferrell thrives in solo songwriting career

Posted on:

Record companies running around in a fury screeching: "Where’s the next Soccer Mommy? Where’s the next rising female singer-songwriter coming out of the Nashville scene?" We here at The Deli Magazine don’t have a definite answer, but we can suggest former 600 Lbs Of Sin frontwoman Sierra Ferrell as a tough competitor. She’s busked around the country and built her following in her own way, choosing to blow with the wind and let her music take her where it will. Taking inspiration from Dolly and Emmylou, Ferrell makes Americana her own with her voice’s subtle warble and breadth of emotion. One of her latest singles "Little Bird" showcases her brilliant arrangements and musical talent; take a listen to it below. Ferrell has just wrapped up a tour of the US, so stay tuned for new music or new show dates. – Will Sisskind

Soul songwriter MELD launches Kickstarter for debut LP

Having released her debut EP H.U.R.T. in 2017, soul fusion singer-songwriter Melanie Dewey — known as MELD — has launched a Kickstarter to kick off recording sessions with her band for her upcoming debut LP. Dewey has performed around Nashville for a few years now, and has taken her act across ten different states and over twenty-five cities. Her hope with her music and her debut album is to help inspire more women into the forefront of soul music and to show that eclectic musical elements can jam well together when put together the right way. With her Kickstarter, Dewey hopes not only to cover all the costs for her band, the studio time, and the other production expenses, but also to build a record that will allow her to share her voice beyond anywhere she’s ever shared it before. Kessenich and his band released the first set of tracks from their EP Human on October 26th; the five songs showcase Kessenich blending his past folk sound with a touch of indie rock and world beats. The track "Cannibals (Song For Aleppo)" — about the Syrian Civil War — has notes of passion from Chris Martin and Bono, and gives a lyrical nod to Steve Perry.
