Q&A with our Artist of the Month, THE DOTTED EYES

Posted on:

The Dotted Eyes, our artist of the month, took time out of their hectic recording sessions to answer a few questions for us. Here, we learn about how searching for girls on the Internet sometimes really can work out, how diverse their musical tastes all are (Boyz II Men was really popular back in the day, we dig.), and what their biggest pet peeve is about the Boston music scene.

deli: How did the band start?

The Dotted Eyes: A few years ago, Neil Mittal started writing a lot of quiet male/female duets. Duets are very difficult to sing by yourself, so he decided to get a band together – which included our guitar/keyboardist Josh Breckman. The songs quickly turned into pop/synth/rock anthems that didn’t quite work. As a result, the band fizzled and Neil and Josh learned some valuable lessons.

After a few months off, Neil and Josh took a step back and tried a new approach to working on these songs: demo early and often. Josh has a studio in his basement, and they’d record rough versions of their songs, and constantly tweak them until the arrangement really complemented each song. The results were quieter, more acoustic songs that really highlighted the melody and the duet nature of the songs.

Tried as they might, Neil and Josh had quite a bit of trouble playing male/female duets by themselves. So they started looking for girls on Craigslist…

Somerville Porchfest — Saturday, May 21, 12-6pm

Posted on:

porchfest

The Somerville Porchfest is taking place this Saturday, May 21. Essentially, it’s like open studios for musicians. The event started four years ago in Ithaca and local music-lover, Nancy Goodman, thought it’d be great to replicate it in Somerville, MA, with support from the Somerville Arts Council.

There will be 75+ musicians/bands performing on porches throughout Somerville during the afternoon of May 21st — and they really run the gamut of types of music. Ranging from bollywood funk, cosmic americana, blues, Moroccan, Balkan, gospel, American space rock and clawhammer banjo.

The city will be divided into three sections and each will have two hour time slots: Union Square and East Somerville musicians play from 12-2, Winter Hill and Ball Square from 2-4 and Porter, Davis, and Teele from 4-6. Look for red balloons on participating houses! This event will happen rain or shine. Maps are available via the website.

Video Exclusive — Old Abram Brown, “Silhouette”

Posted on:

Starting last week, Old Abram Brown, have gone on a "blog tour" releasing exclusive videos of the band to indie music blogs every Friday. The Deli Magazine New England is proud to present the video for Silhouette, a song off the band’s sophomore album, Restless Ghosts. The video was recorded in the band’s hometown in Nashua, NH at The Hunt Memorial Library.

From the very begnning, Silhouette swells with energy. The rattling guitars and powerful vocals make this a song you want to turn up full blast and dance around the room to. This band has so much heart and intensity, both of which are apparent on this track.

Q&A with Sand Reckoner

Posted on:

sand reckoner

The following is a Q&A with Sand Reckoner, one of the deli’s bands of the month in April! Be sure to check out their website for free downloads of The Shepherd EP and Sing Us Your Lies.

deli: How did the band start?
Sand Reckoner: Matt and Ben have been playing music together for around 8 years now, and with Jon for the last 4.  After being in a few different groups together, and relocating to Boston in 2009, we found our sound coming together in much more concrete way.

deli: Where did the band name, Sand Reckoner, come from?
SR: Ben found the name of a band while reading about Archimedes’ theory "The Sand Reckoner".  It comes from a paper Archimedes wrote about a hypothesis of how many grains of sand it would take to fill the entire universe.

Mighty Tiny — White Dog Rough Again

Posted on:

mighty tiny

The blend of blues, americana, and Roussillon (Provencal?) folk music could be viewed as either the next fusion for bored Berklee kids to kick around/to death or as an exciting avenue for musical exploration, possibly because of it’s relative obscurity in the pop music landscape.  Maybe there is another viewpoint I’m missing.  I don’t know.  It’s polarizing, is what I’m saying.  But for those of you who may enjoy a bit of sonic adventure (being a fan of Tom Waits and Gogel Bordello wouldn’t hurt either), Mighty Tiny would be well worth your time.  Their new release, White Dog Rough Again, skips jauntily through a number of different styles and genres within each song, creating an interesting, if somewhat manic, listening experience.  The best feature of this band is if you don’t like a particular part of a song, just wait for a few seconds and it will be completely different.  The worst part is that you may not like the following parts either.  You shouldn’t necessarily listen to this as a soundtrack for any particular task or commute, but I did find it an enjoyable exercise in active listening, which I don’t often feel compelled to do.

You can preview the album from their website, though I would highly suggest going to see them perform live at their CD release party at the Middle East Downstairs on Friday, May 13th, before reaching a purchasing decision.

Interview with RED BELLOWS

red bellows

Check out the deli’s interview with Red Bellows, one of our bands of the month in April! Be sure to check out their show tomorrow, 5/11, at church in Boston with whenairturnstowater, Cats and Cats and Cats, and Ladycop. Red Bellows goes on at 8 pm.

deli: How did the band start?

Red Bellows: Uncontrollable outside factors caused the creation of this band. Beckoned from different corners of the planet, the RB sound evolved from four prototypes bouncing around like a ball of barbed friction.

deli: Where did the band name "Red Bellows" come from?

RB: We looked through a camera with red bellows once. We liked what the other end looked like. We also couldn’t call the band Shred Yellows or Bread Cellos because that would just be ridiculous.
