Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling’s first music video released, Episode 1 – Arrival

Posted on:

Boston’s Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling have released their first music video for the song Episode 1 – Arrival. The band, which is two-thirds of the way through a project to write and record a song for each of the 17 episodes of the cult 1960’s tv show, The Prisoner, released their second EP, Questions Are a Burden to Others, earlier this week.

The music video for Episode 1 – Arrival is a shot-for-shot recreation of the opening sequence of The Prisoner. The project took 11 days of shooting and nearly 2 years of planning to create. It was shot in Boston and New England with an eye to replicate as nearly as they could the London/Wales/1960s landscape of the original. Lead singer/drummer Sophia Cacciola took on the role of Number 6 (played originally by Patrick McGoohan) – see the classic Lotus 7 replica racing around downtown Boston as the story of the unnamed protagonist unfolds as she angrily resigns from her intelligence position only to find that she can’t get away quickly enough to avoid being gassed and chased by a giant white ball.

The song is available on their website for free download.

Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling’s next show is Thursday, June 23 at Church w/ Doomstar!, White Fence, The Strange Boys.

Q&A with May’s Artist of the Month: Doctor Doom Orchestra!

Posted on:

ddo

How did the band start?

It’s a bit of a long story, Doctor Doom Orchestra sort of rose from the ashes of a few bands. Andrew Simpson (Bassist) Pat Hurley (Guitarist) Lucas Batten (Drums) and myself (Pete Hantzis) played in a band together in college (Covalence).  We split up after graduating U-Mass Amherst.  Luke & Andrew did stick together through several projects thereafter.

Meanwhile, I helped start a group called "Doctors of Flight." That band featured current Doctor Doom Orchestra members Dan Fasset (Fiddle, Hermonica, Mandolin) Jess Markey (Trumpet) and Andrew Simpson, who later replaced our bassist.

After Doctors Of Flight broke up we combined the past with the present and luckily stumbled upon the final two members of Doctor Doom Orchestra, Andrea Tavares (Vocals) and Dave Pratt (Saxophone).

Where did the band name come from?

At some point we started referring to Dan as Doctor Doom.  It caught on pretty quickly and people seemed to really dig that name…

The Hush Now — The Making of “Memos”

Posted on:

the hush now

I am heading to Mad Oak Studios to meet up with the lads from The Hush Now to observe the proceedings as they lay down new material for what will become Memos their third full-length release.

It’s a good night to drop in on the band. They’ve just finished a series of sessions that saw them nail take after take and finish a remarkable 13 songs in barely two days of marathon recording. They are, consequently, in rather high spirits.

The kitchen is where I find everyone upon my arrival. Drummer Barry Marino, keyboardist John Millar, lead singer Noel Kelly, bassist Pat MacDonald and guitarist Adam Quane are all hanging between takes. The kitchen area is small; it seems all the more so considering the hulking edifice of the studio’s exterior.

I am not the only visitor to the studio….

Pleasant Sweaters — Songs From Songs

Pleasant Sweaters
Songs from Songs
From: Boston, MA

Pleasant Sweaters represent what could happen if Weird Al Yankovic got serious—and that’s not a criticism. Admit it. Like me, you’ve always thought Weird Al’s talents have been masked by his parody and you’ve always wondered what it would sound like if he hung up his jester’s cap. Well, now you know. Kidding aside, Pleasant Sweater’s debut record, Songs From Songs offers lush indie-pop supported by fantastic horns and strings. In addition to Weird Al, you’ll also hear shades of Belle & Sebastian, Mountain Goats and Weezer.

Static Kill
Static Kill
From: Naugatuck, CT

Connecticut’s Static Kill offer a serviceable brand of nü-metal. Crunchy verses were built for the mosh pit while the choruses spotlight their sensitive side. These tracks are tailor-made for hard rock FM radio. These lads will find their way above the fray of amateur hard rock bands that glut the bars and clubs of New England.

Prayers For Atheists — New Hymns For An Old War

Prayers For Atheists
New Hymns For An Old War
From: Providence, RI

Prayers For Atheists’ New Hymns For An Old War is a blazing hardcore record with all the ingredients of a classic—songs about the mosh pit, anthems about the bonds of friendship, shout-outs to their home town, and most importantly manifestos on changing the world. Most of the tracks are played at break-neck speed with mosh-ready breakdowns with vocals that split the difference between screaming and singing (while never degenerating into the cheap thrills of screamo). What sets PFA apart from standard hardcore fare is their relentless positivity and an almost hip-hop groove. I was inspired enough to invest $20 in the deluxe release, complete with CD, digital download, T-shirt, bumper sticker, and patch.

Dom Announce “Family of Love” EP, out August 9 on Astralwerks.

Posted on:

dom

Ever since he went from selling low budget beats out of a Worcester bedroom to pursuing his own twisted version of pop music, Dom has made one thing clear: his undying desire to deliver heaven-sent harmonies and hooks that are heavier than—and about as colorful as—his pink paisley guitar.

Nothing’s changed now that he’s finally ready to release EP2, Family of Love, out August 9, on Astralwerks. This time around, Dom used a proper studio session with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Björk).

With a third EP also in the works for later in the year, Dom is doing what he does best: delivering filler-free pop tunes that are catchy as hell.

Tracklisting:
Telephone
Family of Love
Damn
Happy Birthday
Some Boys

Tour Dates:
6/16 Boston MA, WFNX Clam Bake
6/17 Brooklyn NY, Northside Festival / Brooklyn Bowl
8/5-8/7 Chicago IL, Lollapalooza
8/12 Bangor ME, KahBANG Festival
8/26-27 St. Louis, MO LOUfest

Below is an acoustic version of Burn Bridges, a track off last year’s EP, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods.

Interview with Mean Creek’s Mikey Holland

Posted on:

The Deli New England caught up with Mean Creek‘s Mikey Holland recently. He told us all about what’s on the horizon for their new album, what it was like playing SXSW, and how inspiring it was to hit the road with Buffalo Tom.

FYI: Mean Creek will be playing with Hands and Knees, Fedavees, and Banditas at Great Scott this Saturday, May 28th.

I’ve heard that interviews are all about atmosphere, so it is with some regret (or perhaps great consideration and forethought, depending on your outlook) that I sat down with Mikey Holland, drummer of Mean Creek, at perhaps the loudest location possible: Charlie’s Kitchen in the midst of an under-construction Harvard Square. But, hey, we all have busy lives to lead and a good pint before work never hurt anyone, right? Amidst the cheery conversation about their latest tour and forthcoming single, one of the waiters actually semi yelled “Interview!” at us and quipped on how badass Mikey’s band is. Kooky!

8 pm — Jesse Kohn
A different opener each week on at 7pm.
