If you need to freshen up your Music To Zone Out To playlist, give Mild Minds‘ MOOD a try. Run by Benjamin David, Mild Minds has the trip hop sounds to which fans of Caribou and Four Tet will find themselves dancing. MOOD, Mild Minds’ debut album, has tracks such as "Movements" and "Walls" which layer catchy drum grooves and soft pulsing synths over droning bass. The effect will keep you moving to the beat as you remove yourself from whatever stressful medical, financial, or mental situation threatening you at the moment. CARROUSEL — the duo of Joel and Sharon Piedt — have released a music video for their new single "A Solitary Soul", off their new EP I Wasn’t Well. The song brings the psych rock energy of the Piedts, but the video shows real creativity within limits, as the duo used iPhones alone to shoot the footage. In this day and age, to use just a phone to shoot a film might seem lo-fi. But the other production values the Piedts focused on took their video to another level. Their spacesuit costumes and locations — some of which were used to film the Tatooine scenes for Star Wars — create a sense of depth and atmosphere on top of that which the music already provides. Moses Sumney has become bigger than ever in the past several months, and with his new double album græ on the horizon, more fans are flocking to his style of R&B mixing with folk and soul. On March 4th, Sumney will play a free all-ages show at the Bootleg Theater, the final one of his residency at the venue which began back in February. He’ll play songs from græ, many of which deal with the concepts of color and space as spectra and liminal entities. As fans enter the theater to the show, they’ll hear music from græ playing around them in immersive 3D audio to create atmosphere, as well as stir up conversation and build community. In a society filled with dead-end online dating apps, the crafty art of being ghosted, and empty, unfulfilling relationships, it is easy to see why most people hate Valentine’s Day. Fortunately, no matter what your relationship status, music can be an unmatched outlet to feeling apart of something when you are at your lowest. This Valentine’s Day, indie-pop group The Millennial Club released their newest single, "Feel The Same". The group’s soft, groovy instrumentals create an enchanting and dreamy atmosphere that will have you drifting off into a euphoric state. Vocalist Andres Owens’ soft, emotionally driven lyrics tell a modern love story about constantly wondering if the one you like feels the same. John War is putting out his debut album Fantasy soon, and they’ve released the single "Corn Syrup" as a preview of what’s to come. "Corn Syrup" sounds the way War envisions indie rock evolving in the 2020s: Rich with sound both analog and synthesized; at once lo-fi and with high production values. The futuristic sound of "Corn Syrup" matches the lyrical content, which comes chock full of references to the apocalypse, dishonest culture, and the present and oncoming dystopia. Emma Charles continues to rise up the ranks of singer-songwriter notoriety in the LA area with the release of her new EP Connecticut, as well as the video for its title track. On "Connecticut", Charles uses her 2019 road trip from her home state of Connecticut to Los Angeles as an allegory for transitioning from the familiar to the unfamiliar, the comfortable to the unknown. The video for the track shows Charles as a child in many of her family’s home videos, but it ends with the present-day singer-songwriter smiling, showcasing her readiness to go forth into whatever comes next for her. Billboard named Charles a Best Emerging Artist of 2020, and NOW That’s What I Call Music named her a What’s Next artist, an honor given previously to acts such as Shawn Mendes and Billie Eilish. Fans of Kate Bush’s more mellow work will find something to love in Sara Melson‘s new track "State of Ease". Melson, a songwriter and actress, shines on her new single, marked by her airy vocals and the meditative backing track simple piano chords and echoing drums. The video comes rife with drone shots of Melson standing atop a cliff above the ocean, letting the wind whip at her dress and hair and watching the waves of the water roll up to the shore in the sunset. DIY dream pop crew Orchin will bring their ethereal tracks to Moroccan Lounge on February 23rd, providing a perfect soundtrack to the otherworldly feelings that one might experience during a Mercury retrograde. If communication issues, mood swings, and more frustrations than normal have plagued you throughout this past week, Orchin’s music will help you to find a little meditative corner of your mind. Their album Serene dropped last August; tracks like "Othello" and "Care At All" come packed with lush guitars and echoing drums, along with Jeremy McLennan’s surround-sound voice. Celeste Tauchar has ramped up musical output under the Talker moniker over the past several months; with the music video for the new single "Suck Up", that tornado of activity continues with mercy. Tauchar’s addictive emo-pop shines in the new song, the lyrics of which discuss identity, self-reflection, and self-worth. The music video shows Tauchar in various facets of her identity, taking us from the rock star to the shy person alone at a party to the person trapped in a flurry of colorful lights and inexplicable emotion. Alex Johnson of power pop project Why Dogs Why has collected a mass group of indie and DIY friends to celebrate 25 years since Green Day released Insomniac, one of the band’s seminal albums. The compilation record, Jesus Christ Supermarket: A Compilation to Celebrate 25 Years of Green Day’s Insomniac, contains covers of every song on Green Day’s 1994 record, including The Rare Occasions covering "Armatage Shanks", Cheekface taking on "Walking Contradiction", and Kid Carrion mixing up "Brain Stew". Folks outside of LA take on some tracks as well, including Tulsa-based Team Chino’s take on "Jaded". Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Eyedress has put out a new song called "Let’s Skip To The Wedding", along with its video. Idris Vicuña, the mind behind Eyedress, goes full force with his dream-pop stylings that smack of Ariel Pink and Drab Majesty. His droning voice hums over twinkling synths and lo-fi guitars in a simple ode to love that lasts just under two minutes. Short, sweet, and filled with the kind of vibe that’ll make you want to fall in love, Eyedress — who just moved back to California from spending time in Manila — is bound to make Los Angeles fall in love with them. On February 14th, Leila Sunier will drop her debut EP, If Only To Bleed Out The White Noise. Though the multi-instrumentalist and songwriter has already seen some press from American Songwriter and Audiofemme, her new EP will mark the first full introduction of her work to the masses. In the six songs on the EP, Sunier explores electric dance-pop hooks and moments of quiet reflection with her guitar; you can hear these elements mingle on tracks like "Ghost", on which Sunier’s soft voice adds pulses of muted energy.
