NYC rockers Born Cages just premiered a new music video (streaming below) for the single "I Just Want the Truth, Baby," off of their recently released debut album, "I’m Glad I’m Not Me." Shot in slow motion black-and-white, and partially inside of a church’s confessional booth, the video emenates a mysterious and sexy vibe. The song itself is 3-minutes of sex-laden lyrics laid over dark, electro-rock instrumentation and an infectious melody that deviates from the traditional indie-rock formula in just the right places. The trio’s anthemic rock songs and unique fusion of electro- and indie-rock elements has garnered them a lot of attention in the last few months. Following the end of their first headlining US tour, Born Cages has signed on as a part of this summer’s Vans Warped Tour, but unfortunately it won’t be bringing them back to New York. The album is available for purchase or streaming, check out also the videos for the songs "Caiti" and "Don’t Look Back."
Buzz alert! Stolen Jars releases singles from upcoming album, ‘Kept’
Montclair, NJ band Stolen Jars, started by duo Cody Fitzgerald and Molly Grund, plays an intimate and imaginatively percussive brand of dream folk. They haven’t rushed things since the release of their well received self-titled debut album in 2011, releasing few tracks tracks in the following years (including a cover of Beyonce’s hit "Love on Top"). However they’ve been very active live, playing shows all over the East Coast, and opening for the likes of St Lucia and Jessie J, and you’ve even heard their catchy single, "Driving", in an iPad commercial. This year, Stolen Jars have released three singles off of their upcoming album, "Kept." The eponymous track (streaming below) highlights the band’s sweetly melodic vocals, and their peculiar, creative use of drums. The song boasts an energy that’s snappy and gentle all at once. After packing Pianos last week, they’ll be celebrating the release on August 28th at Arlene’s Grocery and touring around the NYC area leading up to the date. The home party will be back at home in Bloomfield, NJ on August 29 at All Sounds. They are also playing Elvis Guesthouse on 08.07. Check out also the more recent single ‘Bright Red.’ – Sam O’Hara

NYC/LA electronic duo Collapsing Scenery hosts art event for ‘Metaphysical Cops’ video: LA, 07.31
Collapsing Scenery‘s musical comfort zone can be found somewhere between the barriers that separate sound and image. And they’ve been sharing that creative vision with their home cities of New York and LA through a series of eventful art installations. The faces behind this electronic act and multimedia project are Don De Vore of Sick Feeling and Reggie Debris, and their collaboration has transformed into something more than just music. They debuted the video installation in NYC this past May, in time with the public release of the video (check it out below), and this Friday they’ll be taking it to Los Angeles. The music video is just a sample of the aesthetics behind the installation, pairing their raucous electro track "Metaphysical Cops," with dark and ethereal images of nature, kaleidoscopic cityscapes and historic war footage in neon. Expect an artistically experimental night of immersive environments, video projections, and live music at the event this Friday (8pm at the Dilettante), and look out for Collapsing Scenery’s full length debut album coming later this year. – Sam O’Hara
Like Herding Cats work on debut LP + play Cake Shop on 08.05
If you’re looking to spruce up your playlist for the second half of summer that’s creeped on us, look no further than the laid-back dream-pop of Like Herding Cats. The Brooklyn-based group began as the solo project of producer and songwriter Dom P., but has since blossomed into a full, four-piece band. Their first, self-titled EP, released back in 2013, contains five songs and runs for just about 17 minutes. Written, recorded, and produced by Dom before the rest of the band was added, the EP floats gently along over warm melodies and expressive lyrics, resulting in a delightfully fresh debut. The group’s sound has been compared to the likes of MGMT and Phantogram, and the EP is not without its hints of influence from the likes of 80s masters. Now with a full band in order and a host of attention, Like Herding Cats have begun working on new material and are in the middle of an east coast tour. According to their website, the group is also preparing to work on their first full-length album. In the meantime, you can see them at the Cake Shop on August 5th. – Pat Wolff
Anti-Folk mainstays Prewar Yardsale play Pianos next Sunday (08.09)
Having formed back in 2000, Prewar Yardsale surely earned the title of mainstays of NYC’s often overlooked anti-folk movement, and their latest release keeps faith to their aesthetics. Earlier this summer they released the ‘Black and Blue’ EP (streaming below), a five track sampling of eccentric lo-fi folk songs. The record channels Prewar Yardsale’s punk, folk, and psych-rock influences all over the tracks, and has its grungiest peak in the titular opener, "black and blue", and perhaps its folkiest one in "where did you go". Next week (Sunday, August 9th) you can catch them live at Pianos along with fellow grunge alt-rock acts Jackal Onassis, The Dirty Blondes, Baby Acid, and Second Still. – Sam O’Hara

Kinsey releases single from ‘My Loneliest Debut’ LP – release show at Shea Stadium on 08.06
Nick Kinsey is the kind of musician who’s worn many hats throughout his career; he’s been a member of Diamond Doves, A.C. Newman, and AA Bondy, and has performed and recorded with the likes of My Morning Jacket, Bon Iver, and Cold War Kids. But the latest outfit from this multi-instrumentalist is a solo project simply called Kinsey, whose anticipated first album is very aptly titled, ‘My Loneliest Debut’. The first taste of the record – recorded in a chicken shack in upstate New York – was released through the single, "Get Lost" (streaming below), a psychedelic indie-pop tune with surprisingly confessional lyrics. The record will be released on September 18th, but in the meantime, you can catch him playing the (early) release show at Shea Stadium on August 6th.

DC noise punks Puff Pieces headline show at Union Arts, 8/12
Though they coalesced in an unlikely way, the three-piece Puff Pieces has become quite a fixture in the DC noise and punk scenes, jamming their unusual lyrics and distortion straight to the joy centers of their fans’ brains. Rocking out together only for the last two years, their sound is crisp and coordinated and will certainly provide new listeners with an awesome live experience. You can catch them pursuing their energetically counterculture tack as the headliners at Union Arts on 8/12. -Jonathan Goodwin
Electronic duo The Mast playing Mercury Lounge on August 2nd
If albums full of dark, brooding minimalism are your thing, then you may want to keep your eye on Brooklyn-based electronic group The Mast. The duo, comprised of singer Haleh Gafori and multi-instrumentalist Matt Kilmer, have evolved quite a bit since the 2011 release of their debut record, "Wild Poppies," which combined expressive guitar playing and tribal percussion sounds. Their sophomore follow-up "Pleasure Island," as well as the recently released EP "1," have seen the guitars vanish behind a veil of ethereal vocals, and the acoustic sounding drums be replaced by a bevy of electronic beats and synth sounds – most of them still triggered manually by Kilmer. The duo also takes a unique approach to the idea of live performances, offering live-streaming shows from their basement in addition to the more traditional show. Speaking of live performances, The Mast’s next one will be at the Mercury Lounge on August 2nd. Don’t miss out! – Patrick Wolff

From the NYC digital submissions: puzzle-psych-pop group Palm Pilot
Coming to you from The Deli’s digital submissions, with a sound that has been described as the "sonic equivalent of biting into a Gushers candy," is the first full-length album from NYC puzzle-pop band Palm Pilot. The record, entitled "PLM PLT," is a 10-track collection of songs bursting with color and rhythmic complexity. Hints of influence from bands such as Tame Impala and The Flaming Lips are peppered throughout the album and mixed in with the groups’ own combination of math rock and psych-rock elements to form a vibrant first effort. Although the group currently has no scheduled shows, they do have new material in the works, so keep out an eye for any further releases. DC’s soulful songwriter Sara Curtin releases her new album 7/24, plays the DC Rock & Roll Hotel, 8/6
With a voice like a siren, Sara Curtin’s songs draw in the listener like flies to the honey of her slow rhythms and alluring voice. The DC-based indie songstress releases her latest album “Michigan Lilium” on 7/24, building on her haunting and soulful repertoire with the new single Summer. Curtin’s vocals give away her classical training and the instrumental accompaniment is duly inspired, framing the lyrics beautifully. Catch Curtin perform at the DC Rock & Roll Hotel at 8pm, 8/6, as well as other great Washington acts, The North Country and Stranger in the Alps. -Jonathan Goodwin
